How has Russell Wilson managed to stay above the criticism aimed at black QBs?

Yeah I think Black Quarterbacks take more criticism than White Quarterbacks

I love Johnny Manizel but could you imagine if he was a thuggish looking Black dude?

He would never be able to use the "I'm young" excuse or any excuses at all

Look at Lebron, he was damn near the most hated guy in the NBA......all because he switched teams?!?

They really don't cut Black athletes slack

Lebron was hated because of the manner in which he approached things.

He put on the big show of taking his talents and then teamed up.

Which showed people this had been a plan and plotted out.

THATS what rubbed people the wrong way,
Not because he's black :rolleyes

Not to mention the NBA doesn't have a position like the QB where they put on a pedestals and the teams success/failures are pointed at them.

That's not necessarily true though.  Like a lot of guys will get hated on because they're the stars and they don't deliver.

I think when a guy gets a huge contract and is easily the highest paid player on the team by far, there's more pressure on him to make that team win, whether on offense or defense.  Plenty of cases where guys get criticism for not meeting expectations or underperforming.  Maybe not to the extent of an NFL QB.

I can imagine that, and if he kept winning, it probably wouldn't matter.

WInston was accused of sexual assault like three weeks ago.  After the NC victory, not many care about that.  People are giving him props on his postgame speech.

I've been a huge Lebron critic but when you really think about it,

What did he do wrong?

He used to the intrigue about his free agent decision, to make a TV special that benefited disadvantage youth

Cam wasn't perceived that well among his peers after this,

"He was a total ----hole," one AFC player said. "Who did he think he was? He acted like the big s---. Here he was at his first game and he acted like he was the star. Guys didn't like that."

The Pro Bowl is a laid-back game, one for relaxing, spending time with your peers and unwinding after a tough season. The resort where players are housed is for them and their families only to prevent fan interference.

So when Newton turned down one player's request for an autograph and a picture for his kids at a function, it angered the player.

"Who the hell did he think they were?" said one player. "The only people around are families. He knew that. Yet he big-timed the guy by saying 'now's not the time.'"

That player said Newton did the unthinkable and even dissed Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis.

"That's the godfather there," one player said. "Can you believe he did that?"

Said another player: "It didn't matter who it was, he didn't care about anybody but himself."

Dang that makes Cam look bad right there, black or white, just looks bad.

Didn't he have that "I want to be an icon" statement too?

criticism comes from high expectations. I dont hear anyone talking shsssh about geno smith or terrell pryor. Also (from his interviews) Russell just seem a such a nice and humble dude. He hasn't put himself in that position to be criticize like others has stated. Let that man cooked no need for this thread:smokin

Players who are good or are expected to be good are under heavier scrutiny by the press. You think any cares about EJ Manuel or Terrell Pryor? If you're good, your off-the-field (locker room and personal life) actions are blown up and analyzed. It's especially worse if you're black because it's magnified due to the fact there are fewer black QBs.

Christianity and religion have nothing to do with it. Every black QB is a Christian until they say they're otherwise. Russell Wilson has avoided criticism by avoiding criticism off the field.

Geno Smith? Check the character assassination that happened right before he was drafted, bro.

Terrelle Pryor? Position change???

The criticism is there....

Yea, ESPN made Geno sweat buckets  they had cameras in his face more then Brady Quinn, knowing full well he wasn't going as high as he probably thought based on his CFB performances down the stretch, and the teams' needs in the draft.

Ah, good old Brady Quinn.  One of the more memorable draft experiences ever recorded.

I remember when he came into a store I worked at with his girl, before he got drafted.  He seemed like a decent guy but his girl was on that princess of the world status.  I hope he dumped her for his sake.

Only thing that I saw that was "character assassination" was when Geno went to workouts and wouldn't listen to coaches. So should they not write that down?

Julian Edelman & Matt jones both college qb had to make position changes , is that any different?

So, not negative thing was said about Geno during his 3-4 years at WVU, but all of a sudden he's not listening to coaches when it comes to interviewing during the draft process?

Edelman is what? 5'10" on a good day? Mediocre QB (like Jones) in college.

People were discussing a position change with Pryor when he was no worse than some other mid-round picks at the same position.

i guess you mean criticism from within the sport, cause no one outside of weekly football fans even know who he is - which spares him criticism

This really stands out to me because although i don't think Manziel is doing Horrible things he just needs some shaping up... had this been a black QB i think things would be much more blown out of proportion
