T-Mobile to Cover Termination Fees for New Users

LAS VEGAS — A tug of war has broken out among the major wireless carriers.

As Americans rely more on their mobile devices, guzzling data along the way, the carriers are aggressively wooing new customers.

In perhaps the most daring move yet, T-Mobile US, the country’s No. 4 carrier, announced on Wednesday that it would cover the termination fees for individuals as well as up to five lines per family for consumers who leave their carrier. Customers can receive up to $650 in credit after trading in their phone.

Correction: January 8, 2014

An earlier version of this article, using information provided by the company, misstated the amount of money customers can get by moving to T-Mobile US. They can receive up to $300 in credit for their smartphone, and up to $350 for each line that would incur a termination fee. It is not $350 in credit and $300 for each changed line.

Whoa...this is big.

I'm considering making the switch, but I'm only hesitant due to their coverage. For those of you who do have T-Mobile, are you happy with your services? I'm currently with AT&T and have a family plan where I pay around $230 per month. I was just quickly screwing around w/ the T-Mobile plans, and for 4 lines (and what I need) it came to $160. Like I said, I'm hesitant due to the coverage. I only went to AT&T (from Sprint) b/c of the bad coverage I was getting. I don't want to get caught in the same predicament. However, the money I can save is VERY tempting....what to do, what to do...

Going to call Sprint to calculate my early termination costs... Be right back.

They lowball you on the phone you are required to trade in and then make you buy a new one from them. Also, they make sure you give them a recent smart phone; can't send them an old flip phone to pull this off.

had them for awhile (5+yrs) and i no complaints

not sure about the phones that they are offering, but if you really dont care and price is more important, give them a shot

I figured as much, its how they'll cover costs on their end. How will they know what phone you had?

Tmobile is alright. Good prices. Good customer service. Coverage isn't too great but you'll most likely roam on a different network. LTE is extremely fast even 4G I stream videos smoothly. Been with them for 3 years.

I believe they have access to your contract with your carrier since they pay your carrier the ETF. Through that they have access to the phone you have.

Only if you want the $350 credit. Theyll still cover the ETF. Even then, all you'd have to do is buy a low tier recent phone for like $50-$100 on craigslist. Especially if you have an at&t device. A lot of people probably already have an older phone that qualifies anyways (iPhone 4, S2, etc).

T-Mobile coverage is hit or miss. At my apt I get 30mb/s or so. At work I barely get coverage, but I work in a large building and most people get poor coverage. It also gets spotty when driving, but it hasn't ever been a real issue. I'd check for coverage on T-Mobiles map and if it looks good, go for it.

But even if its horrible, you could always just go back to AT&T and they'll pay for your T-Mobile ETFs and you'll have what you had before. You can't really lose.

Nah. You send them the receipt, they give you the money as a credit on your new account. Unless AT&T includes that kind of info on bills, you're good to go. And even if they do, see above.

Been with tmobile for around 4 years. I've never had any problems but I have heard complaints from people who don't live in major cities.

T mobile's coverage is fine. Like a lot of carriers it depends on where you are..

Wish i could go back to Tmobile. My bill was $81, unlimited everything for 6 years straight

T Mobile's LTE in NYC >>>

Bill less than $100 >>>

im from the portland oregon area.. and i have no problems with t-mobile... been with them for 9 years now...

Had tmo since I was in 7th grade.

I'm 21 now.

No complaints that would make me want to start paying more money for the same service provided by sprint, att, or vz.
