on Def Jam in popularity and sales

That's about it
em

jay

x

nelly

ja

top 5 dudes from that late 90s early 2000s era
In sales.  Nelly and Ja never made it in the top 5 in terms of bars.  Nas never sold as many albums as Ja or Nelly but he was never out of anybody's top 5.  Even dudes that didn't like him.

I liked Ja's Venni Vetti Vecci album the most.

bars aint everything

been on a ja rule kick for the past month and a half for some reason.

listened to all his albums repeatedly. singles and all.

dude wasn't bad @ all. lotta feeling in his music. liked his energy on the more aggressive songs.

back in the day I was hatin on dude based on his singles. never gave the albums a chance

and yeah he was a somewhat "fake pac" but that doesn't take away from his talent.

was a decent lyricist but he was def a great songwriter during the prime window of his run.

his respect is due imo...

Nelly used to say some slick stuff.

-"Kicked the ***** out, cuz she used the word OURS"-

Country Grammar and that St. Lunatics album were in heavy rotation for me. Murphy Lee was supposed to be the one. Smh. Bout to play "What the hook gon be".

They aren't but making hot music in the moment can only take you so far.  Which is why if Em, Jay-Z, or Nas dropped an album tomorrow it would get a listen but I doubt many people would give Ja or Nelly a chance if they didn't have a hot single.

but what does that have to do with ja and nelly being top 5 during their prime?

Once again they were top 5 in sales in that moment.  It doesn't make them top 5 in talent.

Nas is the only one out of that trio that consistently tries and spits. Em BEEN washed...he still can spit when he's not trying to be a pop star with Rihanna, or doing some weird yelling sing-song corny rapping. Hov just mails it in. But you have a point on longevity though. Bars definitely play a factor. But it's not the sole reason.

Ja and Nelly were def top 5 back then on impact alone. They had a very nice run.

I don't know about top 5, album sales, etc

I just known that I liked Ja and his music used to be appreciated, especially when in the clubs.

Use to get the girls on that mood.

I'm never trying to diminish either of their accomplishments but on albums alone there were other rappers I listened to more during their era.

Dmx 's first 3 albums were better than anything Ja dropped and Ja's albums were great music.

Just be throwin Ashanti around like aint wifey material.

His tracks with TI are always enjoyable.

if you're one of the hottest during your time, you're top 5

thats like saying future isnt top 5 right now because hes not that skilled lyrically

Future isn't top 5 to me.  I appreciate his music and his contribution but dude couldn't get in my top 5.

That would be like calling 2011/2012 Meek top 5 because he was on everything hot.   Now the same dude is getting called trash left and right even though he really isn't.

Meek has been laid to rest.  His family is ordering RIP t-shirts as I'm typing this.

I'm not going to be convinced he's alive till he tweets something.
