Ranking San Francisco 49ers' Top 5 Draft Needs | Bleacher Report

via ble.ac/teamstream-
yea but as big as he was, a terrible short yardage back. I've watched him get stuffed on 3rd and 4th and short so many times...smh
Backup QB: Stash Murray, Fales, Gilbert, Pachall without investing a high pick, sans AM11.

C: Besides the three names mentioned in the article...Swanson, Martin, Bodine.

S: Team with Reid. Won't get Ha-Ha. Pryor seems unlikely as well. Could look at Exum for value (injury plagued in 2013), Loston (LSU teammate but takes bad angles), Bailey, or Bucannon. I feel the last name is a possible fit for San Francisco. Deone may not run well but he has a knack for the football, sure tackler, sturdy frame.

CB: Love T-Brock's progress. Dennard is the obvious play if you can secure him (possibly trade up). Physical like Talib. Or Gilbert, Verrett, Roby. Colvin's injury presents value in the middle to late rounds. Fuller, Huff, Gaines if you wait to select a corner.

WR: I believe in Q. Patton. This is a very deep receiver class. Can go early for KB or Evans. Can wait for Beckham or Landry (LSU) guys. Coleman is a big target from Rutgers available in the middle rounds. Moncrief, Matthews, Adams. The possibilities are endless. WR is ripe in 2014.

49ers' offseason financial, WR plans
January, 20, 2014
By Tom Carpenter | ESPN.com

The San Francisco 49ers were oh-so-close to making another appearance in the Super Bowl, but now they are left looking ahead to the 2014 campaign. As is the case with most teams, the Niners are going to have some difficult financial decisions to make during the offseason.

"Running back Frank Gore and defensive end Justin Smith are older and winding down. Anquan Boldin, can't do without him, is a free agent. Colin Kaepernick will be on the last season of his rookie contract," wrote Scott Ostler of the San Francisco Chronicle. "Harbaugh will be negotiating a contract extension, and who knows how that will go? Could get contentious, considering that owner Jed York, like his uncle Eddie DeBartolo, does not lose well."

As far as how the Niners should handle their WR corps, ESPN NFL draft analyst Kevin Weidl thinks the team should target a wideout in the draft:

Kevin Weidl
2014 Draft Needs: NFC West
"The 49ers have a strong pair of possession-type receivers in Anquan Boldin and Michael Crabtree. Boldin is slated to be a free agent and general manager Trent Baalke must make a decision on whether to bring back the 33-year-old who is still giving strong production. Even if the 49ers do bring Boldin back, there is still a need to add a true vertical threat to accommodate QB Colin Kaepernick's strong arm and stretch the field. Florida State's Kelvin Benjamin and potentially Penn State's Allen Robinson (who still needs a full evaluation) could be viable options in the late-first-round range. LSU's Odell Beckham, Clemson's Martavis Bryant and Rutgers' Brandon Coleman would be nice fits in the Day 2 range. Bryant is very interesting and we still need to do a full evaluation on him, but he has loose hips, an extra gear and a very wide catching radius. He comes with some drops and a little bit of baggage, but his game resembles that of the late Chris Henry from the Cincinnati Bengals."

Salary-cap issues for 49ers
January, 21, 2014
By Tom Carpenter | ESPN.com

On Monday, we touched on how the San Francisco 49ers may approach the draft in effort to find talent on the cheap, because rookie contracts are inherently more affordable in the short term than re-signing a veteran or inking a free agent. The salary cap is going to come into play for the Niners both this offseason and next offseason, because other rookie deals are running out.

"[M]any of the 49ers’ young, talented players – who to this point have been playing on relatively affordable rookie contracts – are now eligible for contract extensions," wrote Matthew Barrows of the Sacramento Bee. "That group includes quarterback Colin Kaepernick and several other young, potentially pricey players such as linebacker Aldon Smith, guard Mike Iupati and wide receiver Michael Crabtree. All of those players are scheduled to become unrestricted free agents after the 2014 season.

"The situation will make it difficult for the team to re-sign all of the players in line to become free agents in March, a list that includes wide receiver Anquan Boldin, safety Donte Whitner, cornerback Tarell Brown and kicker Phil Dawson."

Center Jonathan Goodwin is another unrestricted free agent who could be shown the door, if the two sides can't agree on the right price.

As for Kaepernick, ESPN 49ers reporter Bill Williamson expects the young quarterback to get a big payday, which, of course, would impact their salary cap:

Bill Williamson
Kaepernick is going to get paid
"49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has done enough to get paid among the league’s highest-paid quarterbacks. There was question about that early in the season. But there shouldn’t be. Kaepernick has led the 49ers to one Super Bowl appearance and two NFC title games in less than two full seasons as a starter. He is a dynamic player who is not in his prime. He will get paid accordingly."

Could Mangini coach again?
January, 23, 2014
By Tom Carpenter | ESPN.com

Former New York Jets and Cleveland Browns head coach Eric Mangini spent the 2013 season as a senior offensive consultant for the San Francisco 49ers. Apparently, they still see some coaching potential in Mangini, as his role could have been altered, if the Niners' coaching staff had changed this month.

"[Mangini] was considered for a move to quarterbacks coach, sources told CSNBayArea.com on Wednesday," wrote Matt Maiocco. "One source said moving Mangini to quarterbacks coach and promoting quarterbacks coach Geep Chryst to offensive coordinator was an option for coach Jim Harbaugh’s reshuffling of the coaching staff if the 49ers lost offensive coordinator Greg Roman. The source said he does not believe Harbaugh plans to make any changes."

Roman was expected to be one of the hotter candidates to move from coordinator to head coach this year, but that hasn't come to fruition, since he's not believed to be in the mix for the only HC job left (Browns).

What is particularly interesting about this report is the notion of Mangini working with quarterbacks. Yes, he began his NFL coaching career as an offensive assistant for one year with the Baltimore Ravens in 1996, but he spent the next eight years coaching defensive players before spending five years as a head coach.

Mangini turned only 43 on Sunday, so it's entirely possible that he could work his way back into a coaching gig, if he doesn't turn his focus to the front office.

Not a fan of Loston. I've seen him look bad in coverage several times. I see Buchanon being able to fill the void a departing Hitner would leave.

Dennard is good but I wouldn't move up for him. Colvin could be a good 4th or late 3rd pickup to stash. I don't see Gilbert or Verrett being had late in the 2nd or 3rd. Roby has the athleticism and speed for the position but his technique is sick.gif. I really like Fuller's game if he can just stay healthy. Just bowed out of the Senior Bowl because of injury. If Culiver continues to develop...

I like Patton and compared to what AJ did for us, he's def on the right track. With that said, one receiver needs to be taken within the 1st two rounds and one later on also. I'd like A-Rob in the 1st if we don't move up. KB is becoming more of a pipe dream. Martavis Bryant in the late 3rd or 4th wouldn't be bad either

If D-Line is the move 1st round, then I'd pray Tuitt would fall to us. He'd be the ideal heir apparent to Justin, strong can set the edge and rush the qb, with tank playing de/olb position and Quinton dial playing anywhere along the line

How could I forget Jimmie Ward for another potential SF safety prospect.

Yeah, I don't love Loston either. Took horrible angles against A&M. The tape doesn't lie.

Fuller played his entire senior season with a hernia.

Stillin (Eagles fan) loves Allen Robinson and he watches PSU a lot. Bryant is one of my sleeper picks. He came out too early because of kid(s). Work ethic and focus are knocks on Bryant.

Havent really followed college football like i have in the past, but from seeing a couple of vids the 49ers need to find a way to get sammy watkins or K. Benjamin.

Jim Harbaugh alone keeps the 49ers relevant and instills a winning brand of football. 36-11-1 in his first three years as HC. 3 straight NFC Championship appearances with one Super Bowl berth. The ring/trophy is coming to San Francisco in the next few years. It's inevitable. You can see why the Dolphins pined so hard for Jimmy.

Kap won't look in his direction.

If Bill Walsh was still alive he could do wonders with Kap. The #1 thing Kap needs to work on is his footwork and pocket awareness. This will fix soooooooooo many issues he has. Once he feels even the tiniest bit of pressure his instincts are to hit his back foot and "look" for space even tho plenty of times Kap left a clean pocket only to give the rushers another shot at him.

I made this real quick because a lot of people saw what went wrong here which led to a huge turn over. The red arrow shows the direction Kap went which gave Avril extra time to get to him and strip-sack him. The blue arrow shows the direction Kap should of gone in. What picture doesn't show is he has Crabtree deep who has beat his man.

These are things that CAN be fixed by hard work and excellent coaching. Once Kap gets these things fixed the skies the limit.

Offscreen, but I think Crabtree was also about to break wide open on a post pattern too. Chancellor seemed to be occupied with the flat so there wasn't any deep middle safety help here.

Hopefully Kaep works on stepping up into the pocket next season, while keeping his instinct to make a play with his legs.

Anybody else hearing bout this mountain of a man impressing everybody at the senior bowl Daniel McCullers 6"8 355? Next John Henderson coaches are clamoring.Kap prefers to escape left check all the tape from Nevada he throws well rolling to his left which is unorthodox.

This isn't a highlight tape actually shows some good and bad plays but the Range he has is impressive and active in the run game. Not a big collision guy like Hitner more like Eric Reid. I see no problem with letting the SS being more of a coverage guy seeing as how the league is full of teams that can throw for 4000+

Calvin will be gone by the time we pick and to move up for him I doubt they do it. He also plays the same as eric reid not saying they couldn't play together but idk.

McCullers is a huge man but as big as he is he def didnt dominate the line in the sec and disappeared alot in the games I watched. He has potential tho

Anyone else think we need a viable backup QB? God forbid Kap goes down with an injury but if he did I think we'd be ****** beyond belief... no offense Colt..

I totally agree with you.  I really thought about that during the Green Bay playoff game when Kap threw the interception and made that hard tackle to stop the defender.  I really was nervous that Kap was not going to get up after that hit for some reason.  I wouldn't mind a slightly older veteran QB that can help mentor Kap a bit.

You think a guy like Kellen Clemens (Rams QB while Bradford went down the ACL or Josh Mccown would be available for the right price?) Hell, I might be in the minority here but I wouldn't be opposed to Mike Vick although I think he will want to go somewhere he can play

I know some folks have mixed reviews of Vick but personally I wouldn't mind seeing Vick on our squad in a confirmed back up role.  Reason being is because he is a veteran, and I think is suitable to run the offense if something were to happen to Kap.  The only thing is, I think Vick can still somewhat compete to be a starter for a few teams out there.  So he may not want to be here.

Personally not a fan of Michael Vick. I don't want a running qb that never developed into a pocket passer talking to my qb who's trying to develop in the pocket. Not only that but he's extremely fragile so the backup would need a backup. sick.gif Not to mention there's no money for him and something small that nobody talks about but I know is frustrating for offensive linemen is left handed QBs. Vick would last 1 snap with Anthony Davis as his blind side tackle.

Vick will cost too much. Plus he's always hurt...always. Develop McBLT and pick up a Boyd, A. Murray, or Logan Thomas in the draft and we'll be fine.

I also like Tom Savage as a possible undrafted free agent. Had a disappointing career in college but last year at Pitt he showed the ability to hang in the pocket and make all the throws.
