Black neighborhood rejects Trader Joe's

REPPED

The ones who fight the system the hardest are the ones who keep the system thriving

They complain complain complain and do nothing to dig themselves out of their ignorance

I don't respect how a person can say oh a tj's a whole food is bad for the community and rejoice and line up in the 10's of 1'000s when they open a Walmart, a dollar store.... etc. Or line up like mindless zombies at the locale liquor stores to buy booze and lottery scratch offs, the plentiful hot wing stands, the beauty supply weave shops, graze like cattle herd to church every sunday...so on and so forth.

Like really what high end communities do you see with pawn shops a plenty.... check cashiers on every corner... Cant go down a major street/intersection without a litter of fast food restaurants... Or go without a 10 mile radius w/o a church around?

Better question how many libraries or schools of higher education do most of these areas have? Even better question how many of them have gyms/fitness centers...hell even have one in the city?

You got ppl complaining about a healthy grocery moving into their area...yet no qualms/dambs are giving aint a gym/fitness center in the entire city... or a library... like really. A group of ppl who have the highest obesity rates...and the lowest education scores complaining...its out right stupid. It would be equal to Biloxi Mississippi (the city with the poorest/worse education system) complaining about a bookstore moving into town and say it would devalue the area and the education of the city....

I dont understand the need for the shot at the church..There is nothing wrong with going to church.

My thoughts would be they could use that space for a library, community center, gym etc though. What can you build in these empty spaces that would benefit the community without driving up the price to live there?

gentrification with the tech boom in sf. very real when people are willing to throw down 2k for small studios in once less desirable neighborhoods just so they can say they live in the city

trader joes isnt too bad as far as price when compared to "whole paycheck"

Right or wrong im just glad there's still organized black community leadership somewhere in America.

i like trader joes... and i used to live in north and north east portland.. whats wrong with place that can create more jobs especially for that area? if someone is not using a building that has been shut down for a while to "help the community with jobs" why cant someone else do it?
It's easy to see why a neighborhood would not want it there. Gentrification is happening at an alarming rate across the country. And these same neighborhoods are being destroyed, yet when they defend themselves they're still being ridiculed. Trader Joes would employ literally maybe 10 people from the neighborhood.

Also, rent prices would raise quickly, property tax with it.
north portland and north east portland needs money... the school systems in those areas are a joke because of funding.. middle school and high school all in one school because they couldnt afford to keep them opened.... section 8 is still available if you need help with rent.. lots of hipster neighborhoods started popping up that were in hood areas but the rent was still low... whats wrong with having a city with no "hood"
Never knew that Portland had black parts of the city or hoods, figured it was one of those cities thats mostly white with a few mixed neighborhoods....if its an empty lot just put the store there and be done with it, aint like they tearing down stuff to build the store

How does that property get appraised at $2.9M but they're willing to let it go for ~$500k? If all they can get is $500k, shouldn't it have been appraised for closer to $500k? ~$0.15 on the dollar seems too good to be true.

Guess theyd rather have crack pipes fill up that empty lot rather than jobs and foottraffic

Am I really living in America?

Such a well thought out post. You sir, are brilliant. :rolleyes

I live a block away from a Trader Joe's that literally shares the same building as section 8 housing units, and there is not a single colored person working in that store. But i'm sure you've done extensive research on the matter... so I'm sure you know what your talking about and your post carries substance.

this group of black leaders just makes me picture those reverends that rock gators drive benzes and rock nothin but gold and rolexes.

redhook has a much more expensive health food store called fairway. its located right by the projects and the majority working there is black/hispanic. im not even talking about just crew level workers, it goes up to the general manager of the store.

did it benefit the neighborhood? it certainly got businesses and money flowing into it and more jobs being provided.

So it's ok if they're wrong just as long as there is one? What are you even saying?
What makes them wrong? If they don't want it, they don't want it. If they're actually wrong at some point wouldn't that become abundantly clear to them?

But then what would NT argue about??
Thick/fat and skinny/prepubescent boy body chicks.

Right or wrong on the Trader Joes decision.

You people are weirdos

Again, didn't say they were wrong. I was talking about what that guy posted about "right or wrong I'm just happy there's a... Blah blah blah...."

Wow, sorry to hear that but it's good to have some insight rather than just speculation.  Any idea of the %  increase of the property taxes?  Is that why your family lost their home as well?
Don't know what the increase was but old dude ended up moving back to his homeland of fiji after having that market for many years. Also had a good family friend that ran a corner store on 26ave and alberta ..He lost his store back in 03 after they moved in all those coffee/bike shops. Missed buying single stoogies for a dime..
And yes the major increase of rent caused my parents to relocate. 30-50% increase did major damage.

What you posted was completely stupid. No hiding that buddy. No overreaction needed. Others agree.

Idiots usually travel in groups. Doesnt make you any less of an idiot. But ill hold you and your buddies hands for this one.

Ready?

Whether their decision to reject Trader Joes turns out to be a good or bad one (decision) I am glad that there is leadership in black communities somewhere in America. Why? Because it is extremely rare nowadays.

Comprende? that means comprehend. Comprehend meaning "do you understand?"
