Why do NBA PLAY-BY-PLAY give out college affiliations in starting lineup?

Being from Canada where collegiate sports isn't held to the high regard it is in the USA.

Why is it play-by-play announcers feel the need to give out college affiliations in some random game in the middle of January.
I don't need to know so and so came out of Wake Forest for the 10 000th time.

Same with the in arena PA guy, introducing everyone.
There's a jumbotron and media guide for a reason.
Tell me in game 1 of the season who the head coach is. I don't need you to tell me David Joerger is the Memphis Grizzlies head coach in game 51, after i heard the same thing 50 previous times

Its how they used to do it back in the day and its really not a big deal so they never bothered to stop doing it.

And of course people are proud of their schools and want to rep them whenever possible

Why not give ample history on all participants involved? I don't see the issue at all. Hell, I don't think it is done enough.

Because it fills air time? Same reason they throw up random stats, same reason they have interviews mid-game with coaches repeating the same cliched responses about "we gotta work harder, they're beating us on the offensive end", same reason they show celebs in the audience, and so on. It's a long broadcast and you've got to put something out there, so why not.

Why do grown men in the NHL feel the need to fight like drunk dudes at a bar?

It's a cultural thing that's been ingrained in the sport

But is now slowly getting outdated. As people are debating it's relevance in present day

Because that's where they came from. Duh

It should be trivia type information given out during the play-by-play of the game.

I don't think it's relevant to give it out at the beginning of each game.

It's useful to know how tall Kevin Durant is and what position he plays.
But which college he went to is irrelevant information as an introduction for each player

In your first post you criticized play-by-play guys for mentioning the colleges players attended. Now, you just said that such information should be given out during the game by the play-by-play guy. You JUST contradicted yourself. So which is it???

Serious question, the NCAA is more important to the American Culture than the Canadian version of the NCAA is to Canada's culture? I am asking.

If yes, maybe that is why you don't feel it should be as important?

My problem was them doing it every game as part of the introductions
I don't mind it as a trival thing during the broadcast, just if it isn't repeated game after game

And Canadian collegiate sports just doesn't have the fanfare that NCAA does. There's no big CIS TV contract.

You answered your own question in the first line. Collegiate sports is held to a higher regard in the US than Canada. It brings in a lot of money and players/students have immense pride in their school. Almost like a fraternity/brotherhood. Just the way it is in America. Not sure why you're so upset about it tho.
