does anybody think NY rappers as a whole are too comfortable and too full of themselves?

seems like NY rappers think highly of themselves and think they are on top of everything but don't really put out that quality music they used to put out. seems like they are really stuck in the glory days and this is coming from somebody that is from NY. i think it's part of the reason why the East Coast isn't on top anymore. plus they all used to beef with each other and that also damaged what could of been a great thing for hip hop. these late collabos might not even help them.

Plenty of NY rappers still making good music. Not on a mainstream level really but that's not needed for good music to come out. South can have their ****** radio tunes that all sound the same.

 nyc is gassed beyong belief

musically stagnant. for years. yall got 3 listenable artists... just because yall bump that **** dont mean its good...

Agree with the first 2 sentences, but as far as the last, what stuff from the South is actually on the radio other than Wayne, T.I., Ross and J.Cole? I can scroll through a playlist right know and see Drake, Meek, Wale, Jay, Kanye, Kendrick and Macklemore. Where is this overabundance of southern songs all over mainstream radio that people are constantly referring to??

2007, that's where it is  regional based rap on the radio is all but dead.

I read this when it was first posted and thought it was idiotic. I can't believe there are actual replies. But I'll play along.

First off, why are we generalizing NY rappers like they all the same?

NY has plenty of talent. Jay still at the top of the game. And still reps BK hard.

Bronson one of the hottest dudes out here. Roc Marci. Joey Badass. ASAP. French did his thing (not even a fan).

El-P was responsible for a large part of one of the best rap albums of last year (and the highest rated according to meteoritic). Plenty more I'm not thinking of.

Rap started in NY. It has spread everwhere.

Chicago, LA, Seattle, Atlanta, Florida, Toronto, Houston, Detroit, San Fran, VA Beach, Cleveland, Philly, DC, Memphis, Pittsburgh and wherever in NC J. Cole is from. KRIT from Mississippi.

No one city or state needs to be "on top". This **** is so ridiculous.

Any rapper that doesn't "think highly of themselves" should stop rapping.

I guess I lump in anything that sounds similar to southern music as music from the south. Like Chicago's trap artists for example.

Same way people claim lyrical type artists are trying to bring 90s NY music back.

I just want to know what city is on top if there is one. Because I don't think there is one.

Answering the OP, that's just nonsense. The only ones who are arguably stuck are Joey Bad***** and his group because of their clear 90s influence. So that's one group you don't have to listen to if that's not what your into. Even then, like Illphillip listed, there's Jay Z, Bronson, the A$AP mob, Troy Ave, The Underachievers, Flatbush Zombies, and a few others that are all solid artists.

Secondly, the beef in the early 2000s involving G Unit, Murder Inc., Jadakiss, Fat Joe did not "damage" hip hop. It made it exciting. It was a time where there could be beef on a mainstream level without anyone dying and without the soft non-competitiveness we see today on the same stage. Maybe their would have been some good collabs but it was still a great era. I don't know how you can be from NY and not appreciate that, seriously. If you're still looking to 50 Cent and skinny Fat Joe for good music I can understand your hate for NY though. Even if that collab came out nice.

y'all ****** made me think Troy Ave was good until i actually heard him
mean.gif

Troy Ave is crazy mediocre, though.

But y'all are right, this whole regional stuff has been dead and is dumb to talk about.

Lots of really good really popular rappers coming out of New York.

All I'm saying is that politics aside: There aren't many rappers better than Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Skyzoo, and Saigon.

The issue is not talent. Our city is in the top 5 of quality rappers ( Detroit, LA, Atlanta, Philadelphia). The issue is that our radio stations show absolutely NO LOVE to our artists. HOT 97 AND Power105 would rather play OG bobby Johnson than any of our homewtown rappers.

People usually say "well guys like Sky, Mos, and Talib don't have songs that can make the radio", which is BS. If you play any of their albums, their singles would get more spins if someone gave them the mainstream outlet.

At the end of the day, there isn't a lack of talent. Just no outlet. Maybe it'll be better when we get Flex, and Ebro off the station. But I doubt it.
