De La Soul to Make Entire Catalog Available for Free (25 hours only)

That was on their debut.

But they pretty much moved past that on De La Soul Is Dead.

That's why the album is called that.

Either way, I don't think they get the respect they deserve for 4 straight incredible albums.

I remember like AOI quite a bit as well.

This right here is the realest post I've ever read in the Music section.

De La Soul is THE most underrated group in hip hop. And alot of it is people discounting them without ever having heard the music, just cause they seen like 10 seconds of Me Myself & I video.

They're crazy consistent. And they're music only matured as they did. You listen to their music and its some real grown man ****.

People gotta ask themselves why De La worked with everybody who it's hip and trendy to like before they became trendy to like.

Yea, you can definitely hear more of an edgier and more mature sound and tone overall btw their debut and De La Soul Is Dead. I know the name of the album and the cover artwork was them distancing themselves from the hippy stuff and killing off the DAISY thing. I just wasn't sure if people were listening and recognizing the progression though. You know rap fans have a tough time not judging off first impressions and letting artists evolve.

AOI albums were good but The Grind Date was more the type of quality I expected from them. Can't believe it's 10 years since we got an official album from them.

I don't know how old you are, but when De La first dropped "rap fans" were a lot different. This group always received respect from any self-respecting Hip Hop head. I think it's safe to say that all fans of De Las saw the progression and growth with each release they had and continued to support. I think the commercial success wasn't comparable to ATCQ because they weren't really out for the fame. If you ever watch interviews with these guys; they are the most  down to earth individuals. There has never been talks of disbanding because of the relationship they all have with one another. They are one of those rare groups that posses no ego whatsoever. I for one can't wait until they drop, "You're Welcome".

The weird thing is, they were more successful commercially first.

"Potholes In My Lawn" was basically a great rap record that put them on every Hip Hop fans radar.

"Me, Myself and I" was huge. "Buddy" was a big record.

"....Saturdays" was a big record as well.

And they had plenty of strong records after that. "Breakadawn", "Itzoweezee", "Stakes Is High", "Ring Ring Ring"".

Popped up on the Gorillaz joint "Feels Good Inc." which was big.

Yet somehow when people talk about their favorite Rap groups, a lot of people glaze over De La.

I see the same thing happen with The Beastie Boys, which is crazy because both groups were pushing musical boundaries before a lot of their peers.

It's crazy to see that almost work against them.

SoleByThePound SoleByThePound I was born in '86 so I definitely don't know how it was back then, I was trying to guess why they don't get the same love as ATCQ

illphillip illphillip De La Soul and Beastie Boys are a good comparison, they definitely got plenty of love from the critics though

Although the brothers haven't put out a full release in a while, each of them have been steady working whether it be the Gorillaz stuff as illphil mentioned, working with the Red Bull Music Academy, etc. Plug 1 & 2 put out a side project 2 years ago called First Serve. It was a solid release. They were kinda playing characters on the release. I'd definitely recommend getting it for any De La heads that don't have it.

BTW, here's a new mixtape that popped up featuring the De La crew from Gibril Kuyateh (aka Giku). Just like the first skit featured on the mixtape, De La never cared about commercial success. They had a completely different thought process & approach than ATCQ. They never had the types of ego Tip, Phife, & Ali have. They were busy staying on their grind & never got into the BS kinds of stuff that broke up other groups. It's a testament they're still around really. Below is an image of the track list. Enjoy.

I have 2 shoe boxes full of ticket stubs that are at my mother's house.

All the other tickets are in the jewel cases for the CDs I have.

I can't seem to find the 4 tickets from '91-92 era but here are some stubs from '94.

The show for the stub on the left didn't sell well & ended up being in a lecture room at the school. The show had 50-60 people total. De La & Tribe performed on a riser...

I'll be mad if I can't find the other stubs because the one show from late '91 had Tribe, Jungle Bros, De La, & Monie Love...

Dave Jolicouer, a member of the classic hip-hop group, says a new mixtape will be issued in the next week or so and the trio is working on two full albums they hope to release later this year.

A little more than a month ago, De La Soul gave away its entire catalog for free on Valentine's Day, and the result showed the trio there's plenty of love still out there 25 years after issuing the landmark release "3 Feet High and Rising."

"It motivated us even more," Jolicoeur said before a surprise South By Southwest appearance with Damon Albarn  on Friday night. "We're already in the process of recording two albums, but actually it made us feel like we really, really need to get this done. People are still fans, still really love the music and let's do it for them."

The response to the group offering seven full-album downloads online went beyond modest expectations — demand was so heavy that it temporarily overwhelmed the servers and the hip-hop group had to ask fans to be patient.

The numbers were "insane, I'm afraid to say it," Jolicouer said. "I'm not really allowed to, but I'll say I was expecting it to be somewhere between 15,000 and 25,000 people. Man, you can multiply that by whatever number you can throw in the air, so it was ridiculous."

He said the move was not a marketing campaign, but a gift to fans, who only had to provide an email address. The group's music is difficult to find for a number of reasons, including tangled sample and ownership issues and now-shuttered labels.

"I thought it was really cool," Jolicoeur said. "We had an opportunity to speak to our attorneys, and, you know, in hindsight it was maybe not the smartest thing to do. But in the midst of it, a lot of people think, 'Great campaign, great promotion, great publicity stunt,' but it really wasn't. ...

"It was just, 'What can we do for Valentine's Day? Yo, we can give away our catalog. Yeah, why not?'"

Of the new two albums the group is working on, he said one will be sample-based and one will be recorded with a live band, Los Angeles' Rhythm Roots Allstars. The mixtape will include some new songs as well as some reworked material.

"But in a De La fashion, it's just not a mixtape with 11 songs," Jolicoeur said. "There are skits and things. It's cool. That's coming out in about a week, and hopefully God willing more De La music.

"That's all we do. There won't be any movies. There won't be any fashion lines, nothing like that. Just music."
