Not necessarily. They aren't going to compete with the summer movies and don't want to overlap with them. They probably wanted to be first Superhero movie out next year, rather than be somewhere in the middle of Capt, Batman/Supa, Suicide and X-men.

No one expected the Lego Movie to make as much as it did because it was February and that's a kids film. They probably see it as better probability of making more money since they aren't competing with blockbuster films, they have bigger window of less competition. Plus this movie is/was still a risky move for Fox.

I have a kid and they will watch any movie that relates to something they can play with at home.
 
was always a low key big fan of spiderman.

as a kid batman was THAT dude thats why i say low key.

but im getting real tired of having to sit through ANOTHER movie about how Peter Parker becomes spiderman with an awkward costume.

There are going to be so much comic book movie that they really have no choice to spread them out anyways. Marvels going to be pushing out 3 films a year, DC/WB go maybe 2 and pushing that to 3 as well (like a Vertigo film like Sandman?). Then Fox and Sony and their films. Not to mention that each of those studios has other properties they do not want to go against other big films like Star Wars and Harry Potter.

Good points here, i'm worried at this rate there will be a comic book burn out and we will start to see flops.
 
Eh, I think F4 is only a flop because the movie is bad. As long as it's good, ti'll continue to do good. We are only about a year taken away from when GotG broke all expectations, along with Winter Soldier. And not just on the box office end but also on changing the expectation on a genre.

Yeah basically this. Superhero flops aren't something new. Superman 4, Batman & Robin, Superman Returns, Daredevil, Elektra, Catwoman, & Fantastic Four now. There have been superhero flops mixed in through out the years. Marvel Studios and the Dark Knight Trilogy have been/were able to avoid it.

Yeah but not to an extent where it is a flop. F4 was still projected to make good money until the reviews came and the director himself put the film down.

Wolverine, a movie many hated on NT still made good box office (highest X-film since X3 on it's release), hell even ASM2 made $700 (far from a flop) and many detest that film outside of one that claims it to be a masterpiece. :lol:

I think these studios will have to really, really phone in hard for these films to start flopping while consistently getting 70%+ ratings on RT.

Agree its not even the comic book "burn out" for this movie. There's a lot of missing gaps and questions left unanswered.

Not before the reviews. I really do believe if the movie had at least 50% on RT, it would have hit that $45m-$50m for the weekend and be halfway through it's budget even before international numbers comes in.

I mean NT is really the world of extremes where everyone seems to lament Fox like they didn't do a good job with DoFP (which is the highest grossing X-film to date). They were coming off that high and before that was First Class (which was also well received by the critics and made decent money). Yes there was a step back with the Wolverine but that was tons better than Origins so in terms of Wolverine franchise it was still a step forward (even in the box office). It really is pretty much just on NT where people got blinders on and they forget or choose not to remember how well received other Fox films were and they were trending on a good path.

I tried not to let the reports of production problems and bad press get into me until I saw the film, so no I did not expect it to flop until maybe a few week til the movies release. I was looking forward to it and Tranks take, I really liked Chronicle and the cast and the sci-fi feel.

i personally liked all the XMen movies (for the most part)

so me asking "did you think it WASNT gonna flop" wasnt based on NT perception or biased against Fox.

there was little to no build up first of all.

the trailer was average at best.

and i personally disliked all casting options. especially Kate Mara. but thats me personally. she just bothers me.

i know you shouldnt judge before seeing the movie...GOTG proved this....but to me it was very obvious that F4 was not going to do well.
 
Eh, definitely wasn't obvious to me. I mean what build is needed? In marketing? It was all over social media and tv for the past month or so. It's another origin film so I am not sure what build up you needed before the film came out. They didn't need to go with a viral campaign like others, I like what they did in their website like trying to explain the powers and how it worked for me.

First trailer was "eh" but it peaked my interest with the new style and how they stayed away from being associated with the first 2 films and thought it got better the more trailers they showed.

Again I like the sci-fi feel. Michael B Jordan, I like Kate Mara, I like Teller (especially after whiplash but I also showed concerns) and I like Thing being cgi.

Maybe it's just me but I never judge prematurely (to the best of y ability) on what's going to flop and what isn't based on trailers and production news (even based on marketing). I mean outside of the production rumors (they just turned out to be true) there were no signs this film would be reviewed this bad and flop. I didn't think it would be TDK or IM1 great but I at least expected TheWolverine good (70% on RT but most NTers hated it) or even MoS (56% on RT and I actually liked this film but understand why it's ranked that low) and Wolverine made ~$400m and MoS made ~$660m respectively worldwide. I could have seen F4 making at least $300m-$350m if the reviews weren't so bad or better yet, if the movie wasn't as bad (which was an unknown before we saw the film despite all the NTers who are fortune tellers and would love to say I told you so :lol: despite most saying the same for DoFP and many changed their mind until a year later when everyone hated it now :rofl: ).

Estimations isn't always right but there is a reason it was still expected to make $50m over the weekend before the bad reviews killed the film. It was even trending better than AntMan on some demographics. I honestly did not see it getting buried as bad as it did (I actually think the movie is bad but not as bad as most critics make it out to be).
