there has been a lot of complaints recently but he has a different take on it. I think the whole 'bad guy with similar powers' thing is mainly a trope for origin stories so they don't have to spend too much time explaining powers

Yeah, and it makes sense, as afterwards you see them moving away from that to some extent. Iron Man 2 features Whiplash, using similar tech to Tony but in a different way, with Iron Man 3 then featuring....the most basterdized version of The Mandarin to ever exist
Utilizing Extremis to breath fire Thor 2 has Malekith and the Dark Elves. Cap 2 is the one standout that features a villain (Winter Soldier) similar to the hero and the first villain, with all three doing the exact same things, but Cap's villains for the most part are fairly lowtech like that anyways. And that being said, they also make for better fights in my opinion.Marvel just overall needs to write better villains and stop killing villains off in the first film.

George RR Martin like many other great writers we know today (Alan Moore is another one) are HUGE Marvel fans and tend to cite a lot of their inspiration from Stan's and Jack's work and how they changed the comics game in the 60s.
If you got old comics you'll find plenty more letters that made through from Martin in the letter pages.
He's kinda right about the villains to a point but Spidey also faced Lizard, Doc Ock, Green Goblin, and Sandman. You probably could argue WS is a bad Cap but eh he really went up against Hydra. Thor doesn't have that villain problem but his movies are still average at best.
Iron Man has **** villains to start with so it's harder for him and Marvel was printing money by the time they introduced the Mandarin so they could afford to make him a joke and try to prop up AIM.
Best MCU villain so far has been Kingpin.
