One Of Hollywood's Best Actors Is Campaigning To Play Black Panther

A Black Panther movie is coming. Marvel might be keeping mum about it, but Stan Lee has confirmed it. The time is right for actors looking to make their way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe to speak up if interested. And the most recent to say it loud and proud is Michael K. Williams of The Wire and Boardwalk Empire.

Earlier today, I sat down with Michael K. Williams to discuss his role in the upcoming Jeremy Renner vehicle Kill The Messenger. We'll share more about this tense political thriller closer to its release in October. However, when the conversation turned to all things Marvel, Williams was frank for his hopes and ambitions to get in on the superhero stories. Asked if he had been approached about joining the latest phases of Marvel's Cinematic roll-out, he said:
Quote:
"No not yet. And I'm saying 'yet' with a lot of emphasis. But hopefully I'm looking forward to being apart of the franchise."
I asked if there was any part he had his eye on. Michael K. Williams said with a broad smile:
Quote:
"Black Panther. Yeah, definitely."
But does his enthusiasm for the role stem from a childhood devotion to the character? Or rather from the enticing opportunity to get in on these big, bold blockbusters?
Quote:
"I grew up with it, but I'm more excited about the opportunity. I'm a little more old school. I was into Superman, Batman, Spider-Man. My three top favorites by far. And then you know Wonder Woman, Aquaman--you know that's my world. That's my childhood."
What does Williams feel he could bring to the role of Black Panther?
Quote:
"It would depend on the script. I would definitely bring that quintessential New York City edge. You know, just a little bit of that grit."
Marvel should be so lucky.

Michael K. Williams (A.K.A. Michael Kenneth Williams) has been bringing his New York brand of grit and dangerous appeal to the screen since his film debut in the 1996 crime drama MugShot. Within three years he was working with Martin Scorsese on Bringing Out the Dead. Then in 2001, he got his first role on an HBO series, landing a one-off on The Sopranos. Later he'd win acclaim and ravenous fans for his work on The Wire and Boardwalk Empire. He's gone on to work with a slew of acclaimed directors like Antoine Fuqua (Brooklyn's Finest), Ben Affleck (Gone Baby Gone), Spike Lee (Miracle of St. Anna), Todd Solondz (Life During War Time) and Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave). He's sought after, admired, and one hell of an actor. Marvel would be mad not to at least take a meeting with the guy.

Make it happen, Marvel. We're sure Jeremy Renner will put in a good word for you.

Are there any quality African actors that can play him?

I don't know if I want to see a dude fake an African accent

Still think Chadwick Boseman is a great fit for that role.

Don't you think when trying to get a role with Marvel, listing off 4 out of 5 comics as DC's are bad form? ohwell.giflaugh.gif

Do we know if they are doing accents in MCU? Did they ever confirm Wanda and Pietro's accents?

Anyway Idris Elba is Heimdall, Djimon Hounsou is Korath, and John Boyega has a commitment to Star Wars so scheduling might not work. Those were my 3 picks.

There was one I just learned about a few days ago but I forgot his name. He'd have to bulk up tho.

I always imagined that if they go with a black panther movie, if anything, they can go with a T'Challa who grew up African American, and they can make the movie about him going back home to get back in touch with his Wakandan roots.

So that way, no one would have to fake an accent, and I think the getting in touch with his roots angle would be a compelling personal storyline in itself.

I can see it now.

Young T'Challa had to go to America as a kid. Embraced the American way of living. Shunned everything about the way of life back home. Some tragedy happens - maybe his dad dies - he has to go home and reluctantly, he assumes the throne. He learns to embrace Wakanda by the end of the movie, while at the same time saving his country from a villainous threat.
Just send him to America or England (preferably England, more realistic) for boarding school and come back on vacations. Then he would have the American/English accent.
Also forgot Chewetel Ejiofor would be a great BP. He is Nigerian and also British. He does an American accent flawlessly. Can even do the New York/New Jersey Blaccent like he did in Four Brothers and American Gangster.

Yup.. Start the movie off win T'chaka as black panther and still king.. Who sent t'challa off to educated (boarding school and collage) realizing wakanda no longer be cut off from the rest of the world
post #2208 of 33637
If you want to go the boarding school route who comes back to Wakanda on vacations, then pretty much anyone everyone has named are too old.
Make T'Challa a woman and hire Lupita N'yongo lol

Kinda serious

I wouldn't object at all smokin.gif

Not John Boyega.

Well then make it leave for boarding school and university as well. Now you have more leeway. Dude could be late 20s by the time he finishes getting all them degrees.
Yea she definitely could be the Queen of wakanda, it's just too bad, I think she's completely booked with Star Wars lol.

I love that chick, and I normally don't crush hardbody on black women like that

Did they confirm how much filming she would have to do. She wasnt in the original casting announcement with all those actors so I wonder if her and the GoT chick have that much. I guess they'd need training for the fight scenes.

Also don't think the BP Queen would need to be in the BP movie that much either.

If one project doesnt need her that much she could drop by. There was a rumor that Sam Jackson only filmed Avengers for a week.

Yall dudes jumping through hoops to avoid accents laugh.gif

T'Challa's a genius. I'm sure he can do an American accent to fit in or get an English one. No need make it so he grew up in America or anywhere else but Wakanda. Defeats the whole purpose of his story.

Makes it worse yall naming all these 40 and 50 yr old dudes to play somebody coming back to their homeland laugh.gif
post #2216 of 33637
It's not even about avoiding accents

I'd just rather avoid hiring an actor who can't properly execute an African accent

When someone can't execute an accent right, it just takes away from the movie, because it gets distractingly obvious. I don't want to watch someone faking an African accent and be thinking the whole damn movie, 'Man, he still sounds Amercian' lol

Now you can go the whole 'he's a genius so he can talk in any language perfectly without an accent' route.. but why go there? I think that would be extremely distracting for the casual viewer without giving him some kind of background (growing up in America/England/whatever)

What black actor can't do an African accent?

Half the dudes yall name got African names laugh.gif or already played prominent Africans in film. Whoever gets the job has to put in the work to at least be believable and if that guy can't but is still good enough to do the role they'll just have him say at some point I'll talk to these other peons in an American accent. Hell as far as I'm concerned, there shouldn't even be an accent when he's in Wakanda. They should just make up a language and have them talk in Wakanadan while in Wakanda.

This aint like ScarJo unable to do BW's Russian accent or doing her average one.
I'm not going to pretend I'm familiar with all the names being thrown around (at least not without pictures) but the ones I do recognize seem to be too old or I just don't see as Black Panther.

If they can get someone who can do a convincing accent, then great. My post doesn't apply then. If they get someone who can't, then I say give him a background, if everyone around him is talking in an accent. I would think it'd just throw people off if he's the only one speaking English with an American accent.

But I do like the idea of Wakanda being so modern that there are no accents when English is spoken in Wakanda. If they go that route, that'd be pretty cool.

No lie, I'd be ridiculously happy to see her in a Marvel movie in any capacity. I think she's supposed to be heavily involved in Star Wars, though.

To the Hawkeye fans on this thread laugh.gif

He almost had a scene in Cap 3:
Quote:
“What it was going to be, we were trying to complicate the relationship between Cap and his S.H.I.E.L.D agent friends. If Hawkeye got a call from S.H.I.E.L.D saying Captain America is a fugitive, would he listen to that call or not listen to that call? That sequence actually was heartbreaking for us to cut it. I think it ultimately might have been a conflict with Renner’s schedule,” said Cap 2 co-director Joe Russo in an episode of the Screen Rant Underground podcast. “But there was a great sequence where Hawkeye was chasing Cap through Washington D.C. there was an awesome sequence where they confronted each other in a ravine on the outskirts of D.C. and Hawkeye was shooting a series of arrows closing in on Cap, Cap closing in on him. And then Cap took him down and he realized for the first time that Hawkeye was trying to trick S.H.I.E.L.D, where he whispered something into Cap’s ear that Cap had a tracker on his suit and to punch Hawkeye to make it look real, because there was a Quinjet hovering above where they were watching the feedback back at S.H.I.E.L.D.”
