Marisa Tomei is the top choice to play Aunt May

Variety reports that Academy Award winner Marisa Tomei (My Cousin Vinny, The Wrestler) is the top choice by Marvel Studios and Sony to play Aunt May in their upcoming reboot of Spider-Man. The outlet reveals that an offer was made to Tomei last week but that she has yet to officially sign on. They also reveal that Marvel and Sony are hoping to round out the cast for the film, in order to craft a solid shooting schedule, before officially hiring a writer for the project.

“It’s the soap opera in high school, and those supporting characters, that are interesting,” Feige previously said about the film. “Just as we hadn’t seen a heist movie in a long time, or a shrinking movie in a long time, we haven’t seen a John Hughes movie in a long time. Not that we can make a John Hughes movie – only John Hughes could – but we’re inspired by him, and merging that with the superhero genre in a way we haven’t done before excites us.”

Tom Holland (The Impossible, In the Heart of the Sea) will play Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the next Spider-Man film, but he will make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in next year’s Captain America: Civil War, set for release on May 6, 2016. Jon Watts (Cop Car) is set to direct he film, which is scheduled to hit theaters on July 28. 2017.

Sony Pictures will finance and release worldwide the next installment of the $4 billion Spider-Man franchise, in a film co-produced by Kevin Feige and his expert team at Marvel and Amy Pascal, who oversaw the franchise launch for the studio 13 years ago.

Hottest Aunt May ever. Avengers would probably ask to chill at pete's house all the time.

I was thinking Clooney for a uncle Ben flashback scene

Would be perfect. Didn't Tom Hanks say he wanted to do a Superhero film? He's another cool choice

And omg she's 50 lol she looks amazing

Thor gonna be asking her if she wants to try and lift his hammer.

Have a feeling there going to stack this cast so well that Holland's performance will be somewhat of an afterthought and that's gonna help him a lot.

Ever since the mcconaughey rumor I knew they were gonna swing for the fences.

I know everyone loved J.K Simmons but I have an out the box idea for J. Johan

Cranston

Watching the Avengers Assemble cartoon. Watching the Avengers invade Doom's castle. Something we'll never see on the big screen :frown:

Maggy Lauten as Aunt May!? Marvel's casting is wild  She's too hot to be the old grieving widow but we'll see what they do to her.

I can only imagine how they'll have Peter's love interests look like....if they're doing this right then it has to be Gwen Stacy again.

Jason Alexander should be casted as Uncle Ben.

Mind = explode

I would watch this spider man in theaters just for that if it happens.

I find this disheartening.

"Instead of keeping an open mind an giving the opportunity of a lifetime to one of the many under utilized black actors instead we just hired our the one black dude we know"
He was the first choice and said yes. I'm sure if he turned it down they would of opened up the casting

Black Panther isn't really a "sure thing" so you had to go with a somewhat familiar face. It would of been unfair to an unknown black actor to just throw him into a franchise like that.

Actors who get these starting roles tend to add zeros to the end of their contracts which in some instances makes it harder for them to find work. Practically the same thing happens with Women & minorities who win oscars. They could of grabbed an unknown to do these films and let's say it's a hit, he's suddenly competing for roles with Channing Tatum, the Rock etc and he's most likely going to lose every time. Calling it the opportunity of the lifetime is kind of short sided because they're long term repercussions that are often ignored.

nah they shouldn't really give him a girl in the first flick IMO just have him crushing on a girl. If they really wanna do it right then Betty Brant has to be his first Gf

I just think there is no way they hire anyone for any marvel role no matter how without going through exhausting casting.

and the black actors who don't get the part get on the radar screen's of casting directors. I mean it's the basis for things like the rooney rule.

also that stuff about it being bad for your career is just the general racism/sexism in hollywood. in the end being its better to be in a successful film franchise then to not be.

I don't know how it's a bad thing that Marvel knew exactly who they wanted for BP. And the actor who got casted is someone generally most people approve of.

People complaining just to complain.

Emily Blunt was flat out offered Black Widow without any casting calls.

When she said no it went straight to ScarJo without any major search.

Daniel Craig was the 1st choice for Thor and even got offered it

IIRC Jason Momoa was flat out offered Drax a bunch of times and said no too

It happens all the time. Studios usually have a first option and if they say no then they usually open up the options and settle, just like with anything else in life lol
