Watched it again last night and my reaction was pretty much the same. The Hulk/Natasha romance and Hawkeye having a family still stands out of place, but everything else is solid, including the building tension between Steve and Tony. And of course

I can't compare because it's been a long time since I've seen a cartoon with Apocalypse (the XMen show from when I was a kid)

That's an outlier. Any character can do what Thanos did given the power of the Infinity Guantlet and all the Gems.

In reality, and without the gauntlet, Thanos and Apocalypse are as even or seperate in power as any writer deems them to be.
