New York is the home of some of the biggest rap stars since Hip Hop started in the Bronx. But despite the wide-ranging success of groups like A Tribe Called Quest, Wu-Tang Clan, Beastie Boys and De La Soul—among a host of others—the city’s most commercially successful artists have usually been solo rappers such as LL Cool J, Jay Z and 50 Cent, all of whom have enjoyed sustained careers into their late 30s, at least, and all of whom have claimed the status as the top rapper in the game at some point along the way.

Lets compare three of New York City’s best MCs, letting the facts speak for themselves and running down the highlights of LL, Jay and 50′s careers by the the time they turned 35, using age as a benchmark. The results are a lot closer than you’d expect. Suffering from success. Via http://www.xxlmag.com/news/2014/02/comparison-jay-z-50-cent-and-ll-cool-j-35/?utm_source=rss

it's still crazy how 50 came into the game late and still sold more in his major debut than both of these guys, that alone speaks in volumes. but as of right now Jay-Z is the top dude in NY.

I could never get into LL. Thought he was the most overrated out of all the 80s guys but I get why he was so big and he has a few songs I like.

Has anybody ever had such a impact so quick out of nowhere than 50?

Note tha i can think of

Maybe snoop with doggystyle but other than that idk

50 was the hottest ive ever seen any rapper be it was ridiculous. Anything he touched turned to gold.

There is so much that can not be conveyed through these numbers especially this particular set of stats, i don't even know what the point of this is

I kind of feel the same. But LL had some monster records in the 80's+90's.

Jingling Baby still goes etc.

Was really one of the first guys succeeding moreso because of his charisma than his ability to rap.

And was one of the first dudes that was catering to the ladies.

Which is why I think he doesn't really get checked for when we discuss iconic rappers.

Even though that's a pretty big deal in terms of where the music would eventually go.

Idk about snoop he was basically the co-star of the chronic getting him some major buzz before his album dropped

^Yea, those mixtapes were basically his second wind at trying to get on after his first album got shelved

Two guys had high peaks and massive declines whereas the third rose to the top and remained there for more than a decade.

LL had a massive decline?

LL was the king of rap longevity for a minute.

LL didn't really flop until his last album on Def Jam. He was putting out top ten records and going gold until 2004...nearly 20 years
