In the music business, there is nothing new under the sun. Images are recycled so when it is presented to you it's already familiar: Gaga/Madonna, Ross/BIG, Katy Perry/Cyndi Lauper, Rule & DMX/2Pac, Taylor Swift/Mary Poppins etc. etc.. So when the Clive Davis Brain trust had present Alicia Keys to the world, they jacked/gaffled the ENTIRE image of one of THE MOST UNDERRATED producer/composer/singer/pianist in R&B, Patrice Rushen. Like A. Keys, Rushen is a classically trained child prodigy. You might know the 1976 USC grad from her hits she either wrote or co-wrote such as, "Forget Me Nots", "Haven't You Heard", and "Remind Me". The Clive Davis people even took Patrice's signature beautiful head full of braids to add to A. Keys look. Rushen's songs have been endlessly sampled by artists including Will Smith ("Men in Black"), Maxwell ("Sumthin, Sumthin"), Junior Mafia ("I Need You Tonight"), Mobb Deep ("Temperature's Rising"), and on and on. Mary J. Blige's monster first hit, "You Remind Me" is Patrice's "Remind Me". She was the first woman to be Musical Director for: the Grammys, Emmys, the NAACP Image Awards, and the People's Choice Awards. Now she is the Director of the Popular Music Program at USC. So today even in the shadows, her impact is felt long and wide because she is an original and not a copy.

In the 70's and 80's, drugs had taken over Major League Baseball to the point where you could purchase coke in every team's clubhouse with no problems. It was speculated by the players themselves, that up to 50% of MLB at the time were frequent drug abusers. Players like Tim Raines used to carry grams of coke on themselves at all times so much so that when he slid into a base it was always head first because his coke was in his back pocket. The drug culture was most prevalent with the Pittsburgh Pirates. It's team captain and unquestioned leader, Willie Stargell, used to have everyone take speed before games and if you didn't take it, you weren't a part of the "Family". The practice of taking speed during games, JUST got outlawed about 6 years ago. Pitcher Dock Ellis (with the curlers in his hair) threw his only no hitter while high on LSD during his tenure with the team. The biggest user on the team was Dave "The Cobra" Parker. If Parker wasn't smoking cigarettes on the bench during games, he was doing "bumps" of coke. Parker had HOF talent and the numbers to match but his drug usage is probably what has kept him from being a member of the MLB HOF. Unlike several others in his profession that succumbed to drugs, Parker now has gotten himself together and owns several Popeyes Chicken and Burger King franchises. There were so many lives ruined because guys were "Flying high in the friendly sky without ever leaving the ground" but like most leagues, they don't care as long as they make money. "So stupid minded but I'll go crazy if I can't find it..."

Today as We rejoice, We also mark the anniversary of the passing of arguably the greatest showman of our time and space, your parents included, James Brown. 6 years ago today James left us but his fingerprints on society will NEVER be erased. He is the epitome of self made. Abandoned by his Mother and left to raise himself by his Father, a traveling turpentine worker, he was sent to live with his Aunt at her *****house/gambling operation. He eventually became THE gang leader in his area and thought of himself as Robin Hood as he stole from whites and shared his loot with poor black folk. With very, very little education, he once was sent home from school because his clothes were so raggedy, he was eventually arrested at 16 and sent to prison on a 16 year bid! He did 3 and came out and revolutionized music. His first live at the Apollo album in 1962 is arguably the most influential album in the ENTIRE HISTORY OF MUSIC as it is the foundation of most of your English Rock n' Rollers and your American R&Bers of the time. This picture shows James with his own Private Jet waaaay before anyone else(he owned two). He owned radio stations, a publishing house, a castle in Brooklyn, NY(the Beastie Boys line from 'Brass Monkey', "...I gotta castle in Brooklyn, that's where I dwell..." some say is in reference to James) and his own line Food Stamps! He was his own show promoter and an incredible source of pride! RIP to THE Godfather. He walked with his head held high at ALL times

Before the filming of the motion picture, "100 Rifles", began, the film's female lead, Raquel Welch loudly proclaimed that she absolutely did not want anything to do her co-star, Jim Brown. The only time she spoke to him was when they were actually filming. She was a total *** towards him. So Jim had a plan to get her back. The script called for a love scene between the two. Jim felt that was the perfect opportunity to exact his revenge. The director asked for them both to be nude as to add realism for the camera. Raquel at first balked but later relented. Once Jim got her between the sheets it was all over. The result is what your watching on film is REAL MIXING. Jim slipped right between her thighs and bam after that moment, Raquel never left his side and they were now an item for as long as filming lasted. Jim felt that Raquel really liked him but because of the racial climate of the sixties, she had to act like she didn't. "Jimbrowski, that's what it is. Gotta get it into you!"

Any first deal you make in the entertainment industry someone is going to get paid or continue to get paid because they either put the money up or introduced you to the money. A standard practice in film and music. Be it a personal services contract to which you pay one person so the other can work Ralph Carter aka Michael on Good Times or Jermaine Jackson, who uses this to work and skirt child support. In music it's used to get "points" off your record. Artists have complained about it since the beginning of time but it is the cost of doing business. The "Silent Partner". Jackie Wilson was owned by the Mob an tried desperately to get on Motown but a constant gun in the face persuaded him to re think. Foxy Brown used to complain about a guy, Don Pooh, who she claimed she never met but was photographed with him frequently. TavDash Records are the ones who started R. Kelly's career and got bought out but continue to eat off of Kells' record sales. Harry O's money started both Death Row and Rap-A-Lot Records and has received some financial gain from it. Jay Z is probably the only artist that hasn't taken a "L" on his money from his first album despite Freeze Records getting a piece of 'Reasonable Doubt'. Even young girl groups have faced similar situations. To get on, Matthew Knowles, made a deal with D'Wayne Wiggins of Tony! Toni! Toné! who had all the plugs and connects for a record deal. Look at their first videos and interviews and hes all over the place. He was essentially their "drum major" leading them all the way to the bank. As you can see, what ever percentage Wiggins owns has allowed him to work sporadically and not be around here campaigning for Raphael Saadiq to come back and do a Tonys reunion tour. The moral is find You some artists so you can take a looong vacay.

Ice T is a real period. There's a reason why Ice T has only been robbed once and the assailant was found dead the next day. Ice T can walk on anyone's neighborhood not scared. Throughout his career he has earned more respect than many of these so called gangster rappers who talk but don't live it. Ice's main asset is that instead of giving you the fish, he teaches you HOW TO fish. So when the jackers used to come to him and tell him to run his stuff he would inform them he could show them a way to get two and three times as much. Ice was the man who put on W.C., Everlast, director Tim Story(Fantastic Four I & II, Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man...he started out as a rapper for Ice) and a whole host of others. What ever city Ice goes to he asks to go to the worst part and meet the grimiest of the grimy or the boss of the bosses who are usually so taken back and they are more honored than mad he's there. More importantly he able to be reached and doesn't give them the typical fake rapper phone number either.

The Godfather of Soul "I may not know Ka-rate but I know Ka-razay" chronicles 2: The James Brown we know after Eddie Murphy famously lampooned him on SNL is NOT reality. The real Godfather of Soul was a surly thug, a criminal who you didn't cross or he would try to hurt you physically or financially. Mr. Brown and the "Clown Prince of Soul", Joe Tex were both signed to Cincinnati's King Records. Tex accused Brown of stealing most of his stage show including many of the microphone tricks that we're later adopted by Prince. Brown responded by taking Tex's girlfriend and making her his. To get back at Brown, Tex who is THE forefather to rap music as he spoke on many of his records as opposed to sing, created what many deem as the first diss song and used James name in it so no one got confused about whom he was referring to. As the opening act for James' triumphant return show to his hometown, Tex put on a raggedy blanket and emulated Brown's famous, "Please, Please" act by dropping to a knee and singing the song but this time Tex purposely caught himself in the blanket and sung, "Please some one help me get out if the raggedy cape". Brown was furious! So after the after party at a club where Otis Redding was performing and Tex went to meet some breezys, Brown busted in strapped up and started firing off rounds at Tex trying to kill him in the middle of the show. While, Tex ran and hid in the woods, somebody started firing back at James and The Godfather had NO problem in blasting back. The Godfather shot 7 people and not one was named Joe Tex!! James left the club and jumped in the driver's seat of his own tour bus and sped off. Later he sent back one of the homies to hand out $100 bills to all the shooting victims so this would "quietly go away". Needless to say Joe Tex didn't clown James Brown anymore. YOU GONNA LEARN TODAY!

ACTUAL FACTUAL: After a combo of "drinking his own Kool-Aid" and believing the character Dr. Dre created for him, the guy in the Raider beanie thought he was now tough and could talk crazy to his artist, KAM, whose overall style, rap subject matter, and vibe he basically jacked for his second full length album, 'Death Certificate'. Cube basically became KAM and made a hit record. Over time, KAM asked Cube for his release so he could pursue a more favorable deal and felt as they were "brothers in the N.O.I." that it would be a problem. Well of course to Cube it was and he chose to "freeze" KAM out and and allude to KAM needing to "kiss his ring". For KAM as a real member of The F.O.I. and a real Crip this meant war. KAM and many of the Compton Mosque #54 F.O.I Riders and Crips from own his neighborhood made it a point to now hunt for Cube everywhere. One fateful day unbeknownst to him, KAM's closet homie, Solo, caught up to Cube at a red light. Cube thought he was gonna do his famous mean look that has made him a lot of money and fans over the years to Solo and being out his mind challenged the battle tested Solo to get out of his car and fight. Two gigantic grapefruit sized black eyes and "W" neckless removed forcibly later, Cube had to stumble to the car and dust himself off knowing he got devastated and beat to a pulp by Solo. The only thing he could be happy about was Solo couldn't get Cube's $100,000 Rolex because he couldn't yank it off and Solo was nervous about continuing to alleviate Cube of his personal belongings in the the middle of La Cienega Blvd. FACT
