For my latinos....

Well, as a Latino; I've never been to these groups but from what I see it's usually just that white man holding us down, or viva la raza, or some sort of Latino/Caribbean empowering thing.

Now I'm all for that, but it's odd. We go to the same college, same courses, we have an advantage in grades, and my application looks better than theirs because I can fill that corporations' minority quota. We may be oppressed in some ways but life is pretty good for us.

Also I do feel like what that dude said a drop of oil, pretty much everywhere I go, it's alright in some scenarios but in things like these it's like a token brown dude.

Get a new leader for Caribbean and Latin American Student Association. Make sure she or he has charisma.

Ah i see.

what a weird combo of people to group together.

im president of the hungarian & cuban student association and im having the same problem.

I think you misread what I wrote. I am saying that seeing as Belize is anglophonic and apart of central America, they can relate to Latin America and the Caribbean. So we agree there but a country like Chile doesn't have as much of a connection to the Caribbean as say Costa Rica, Venezuela..etc...

All im saying is that Latin America alone is so large and different that some countries only have language in common, not much else.

Food was the first thing to come to mind though. You can have your continental hispanophonic members try to bring others in with common dishes perhaps.

It's hard to get people to attend things or to attract them at all. I'm not Latino, but at my school, I was in a club that tried to give help to people who weren't from here or was new to the country or city. Granted I'm at a school where they weren't the majority, but it was hard to get them interested. My suggestion would be to hold as many events as you can to get your message across and sell food if you can

Not sure if srs...

But would it make sense to drop the Latin American part? Should they form their own group?

I didn't think it would be so weird of a combo cuz in NYC Latinos and Blacks in general get one pretty good for the most part.

Problem is that latinoes don't want to share the same heritage as blacks (ie. da layaway champion)

So having black students in the group repels the Latinos from seeing themselves as a part of it.

Layaway Champion? Is the a stereotype of West Indians?

Or are Latinos like white people thinking that all blacks are the same?

Layaway champion is Ninjahood.

I wouldn't exclude Latin Americans, but know that cuban/DR/PR folks have more in common with other Caribbean countries (T&T, Jamaica, Haiti:smile:lol) than spanish speaking countries in south America. Different culture, even different dialects of spanish.

And what CreateDestroy said does hold merit.

Right.  But making it a Geographicly based club doesn't make sense.

My favorite example is that: Claro operates all across Latin America and despite region overlap, does not operate in the English/French speaking islands.

Digicel & LIME work those areas.

Those are telecom companies that are specifically gearing themselves towards a certain demographic, in this case by language. They can target whoever they want. Sharing the same language doesn't mean sharing the same culture. Outside of english, Nigeria and South Africa have nothing in common.

Btw Digicel is in Spanish speaking countries and Claro was in Jamaica not too long ago.

Your right, cutting it up geographically wouldn't work due to overlap and I wouldn't suggest it either way but you guys are trying to cover millions of square miles. Some of those cultures are night and day.

Either way, keep up the good work man. I would definitely join something like that.

Really? Not one of my relatives ever had Claro.  Cool to know though.

And yea..thanks.  We trying.

OP, what does Rasta culture have anything to Mariachi and North Mexican culture?

If you can't answer, there's the problem.

Same with if you tried to group Indians with Armenians together in a club? Difference is night and day. lmao

That's a poorly worded question.  Those are both subsets of larger cultures.

Mariachi is a subset of Mexican culture, and Rastafari is a subset of Jamaican culture.

Of course when you get as specific as possible there won't be much if any overlap.

But in general, to take your example, Mexico and Jamaica have a fair amount in common.

Both are former colonial states.

Both have much culinary overlap. Agua de Jamaica/Sorrel, Arroz con frijoles/Rice and peas for example

We are in the same geographic region, the Americas.

Common enemies - drug cartels.

Common agricultural crops

Mixed race populations of black, native, white, and asian albeit in differing percentages.

Just to name a few.

Another thing I forgot to mention is that I understand you're from NYC, where you have all kinds of Latinos who live by each other and interact on a daily basis but being from Cali, I can tell you that most Latinos here are Mexican or Central American like from El Salvador and have never seen a Jamaican, Trinidadian, or Dominican person in their life. I suspect it's like that in most of the other states as well which is probably where most of the Latino student population at your school is from, so you have an uphill batttle trying to get people comfortable with those they probably know nothing about.

I wish you best of luck tho.
