NEW YORK METS 2016 SEASON THREAD

so 1 injury = a problem now?  trust in the scouting and hopefully it works out.  i know nothing about any of these draftees lol

Me neither. I have no clue about draftees.

I suppose Mets are very high on Lindsay. If Lindsay was taken in mid rounds, then he would have gone to UNC. I guess drafting him in top round gives them a better chance to sign him.

It doesn't really bother me when Lindsay wasn't ranked in top 100 or not. Our scouting department is really good. I trust them.

Look at 2007 Top 200 Draft Prospects.

118. Freddie Freeman, 1b/rhp
School: El Modena HS, Orange, Calif. Class: Sr.
B-T: L-R. Ht.: 6-5. Wt.: 215. Birthdate: 9/12/89.
Scouting Report: A member of both USA Baseball's youth and junior national teams, Freeman dominated for the youth team in 2005 before struggling in the World Junior Championship last fall (2-for-21) in Cuba. His stock has rebounded this spring, as he helped El Modena High to a playoff berth as both a hitter and pitcher. While his track record with Team USA and in showcases makes him a top-three-rounds talent as a power hitter, scouts are increasingly intrigued with Freeman as a pitcher. Just 17, he has excellent size, and while working as El Modena's closer he has shown control of two present plus pitches: a heavy 90-93 mph fastball and a power slider. His feel for pitching and clean arm action belie his pitching inexperience--and his desire to remain a hitter. A Cal State Fullerton signee, Freeman could definitely be a two-way player if he gets to college. Teams that like his arm better still may have to give him a chance to hit first before putting him on the mound.

128. Mike Stanton, 1b/of
School: Notre Dame HS, Sherman Oaks, Calif. Class: Sr.
B-T: R-R. Ht.: 6-5. Wt.: 205. Birthdate: 11/8/89.
Scouting Report: One of the top athletes in the draft class, Stanton was a three-sport star at Notre Dame Academy and widely regarded as the school's best such athlete since former big league outfielder Jorge Piedra. Stanton is considerably bigger than Piedra and was recruited by Southern California as a wide receiver/defensive back, as well as for his power-hitting ability. While UNLV offered Stanton a football scholarship and a chance to walk on to play baseball, USC wants him on a baseball ride, with a chance to walk on in football. For pro scouts, projection is the operative word with the raw Stanton. He was overmatched against most of the top arms he saw last summer in showcases, though he has shown improvement in pitch recognition. Stanton has a big swing with resulting big power thanks to leverage and bat speed. He profiles as a corner outfielder with an average arm that could be suited to right field with more polish. He's a fringe-average runner under way.

The New York Mets could promote Steven Matz within the next three weeks, according to a source.

The left-hander leads the Pacific Coast League with a 1.94 ERA. It had been reported that the Mets planned to bring Matz to the Major Leagues in July.

The Mets will promote Matz to start. They may have to wait for a trade or injury to open up a spot in the rotation. New York has been open to trading Jonathon Niese and/or Dillon Gee for quite some time.

Matz :pimp: It's really coming.

Bobby Parnell, whose 30-day rehab clock has officially expired, will join the Mets on Wednesday and will be activated within the next few days, the team announced.

Parnell, who walked one and struck out two during a scoreless inning in his final rehab appearance on Tuesday night for Double-A Binghamton, had a 12.27 ERA In eight rehab appearances.

Terry Collins told reporters this past weekend that Parnell will not start out with a set role.

Instead, “I think I’ll just get him in there and let him get his feet wet again,” Collins said.

Parnell made one appearance last season before having Tommy John surgery in April. He missed the final two months of the previous season with a herniated disc in his neck. He was expected to be back from the DL in late April or early May, but was slowed due to sore right forearm.

Parnell worries me. There's a decent chance he'll need Tommy John again. 14 month return time, and his velo isn't where it once was. He's not ready to pitch in high leverage spots.

This is a great read on Matt Harvey and his arm action—particularly the way he changed it from high school to UNC for the worst just to add more velo:

http://www.chrisoleary.com/projects/PitchingMechanics101/Analyses/MattHarveyPitchingMechanics.html

Guys really need to stop sacrificing their UCL for 3-5 mph more. Plus side is, Harvey apparently could stand to use his lower half more which if he successfully tweaked hi mechanics, could maintain his velocity. But changing mechanics this late in the game is always risky.

I hope they give Wheeler 16 months of recovery time just to be safe.

I hate that I was right, but I called Wheeler eventually needing Tommy John years ago when he first came up. That inverted arm action does pitchers such an injustice, anyone teaching it should be ashamed. It isn't always about velo, pitchability matters so much more in the long run.

I'm gonna pay attention more to Harvey's starts to see if he's made any tweaks. The whole delaying your arm so you can stay on top of the ball longer just makes you late and applies unnecessary stress to the ligaments.

OTL did a nice little report on this stuff:

Great read! I have no clue Matt Harvey changed his pitching mechanics. Well, I never heard of him until the Mets drafted him. I don't watch college baseball. Harvey looked so smooth in 2007. deGrom pitches the way Harvey pitched in 2007.

Alderson did a fantastic job for not allowing Harvey pitch last September. I am sure Alderson would do the same thing with Wheeler. I agree that Wheeler needs to change his mechanics. I still don't have a good feeling about Thor's pitching mechanics as well.

Parnell :smh:
Hard to believe that he's only 30 and already has to deal with his injuries. I hope he comes back strong as before. I like his breaking ball curve.

I want Wheeler to get at least 14 months of rehab in just to be safe. Jose Fernadnez is going to blow out his elbow again because he's coming back so early.

Honest question, what do we do with Murphy this year? He's gonna be a free agent, he's a below average defender, and while he's a plus bat, can we really rationalize paying a 30 year old that can't defend? I think it might make sense dealing him at the deadline. Yes, it would be a Billy Beane type of move, but we have to look toward the future rather than just going all in this year. If we can get a respectable prospect, or swap him for a big leaguer that has a plus bat and a plus glove, I think it makes the most sense. It's an interesting predicament and I'm curious how Sandy handles it.

I'm also curious if Cuddyer can handle some third base. His glove can't be any worse there than it is in left field. If that does happen, I'd like to make a push for Josh Reddick. Feel like we could get him and Tyler Clippard for Montero and a couple of other pieces. Gives us a lefty bat, dependable outfielder, someone that doesn't strike out often, still under team control. Clippard would give us the much needed bridge to Familia that we saw this weekend that we don't have. Not sure if we have the pieces or it makes sense to deal for them, but those two are the types of players I can totally get behind acquiring.

Don't see how he has a future here, it's either Murphy or Flores, and Flores is far younger.

I'd try to move him, but the Mets are going to finish at least .500 this year imo, they probably may want to ride his hitting.

You can probably get a compensation pick if you let him walk in the off-season so they may just go that route. But I gotta imagine they at least explore their options at the deadline in case someone is desperate for a bat.

I like Flores a lot man. I think we have a steal with him given his bat and his contract. Making 500 grand a year and not even arbitration eligible till 2017 :pimp:

It'd be nice if we ship Gee along with Murphy. I can't stand Gee this year. :smh:

I'd love to have Clippard on our squad. A perfect setup.

For Murphy, like Mez said, we might ride on his hitting until the end of the season.

Mets settle on a 3rd baseman until Daniel Murphy returns

NEW YORK — Ruben Tejada will play and start at third base for the Mets until Daniel Murphy returns, manager Terry Collins said.

Daniel Murphy was placed on the disabled list June 5 with a strained quadriceps muscle. The Mets expect Murphy to come off right around when he's eligible, June 20. Murphy had been playing third after the Mets rearranged their infield with the knowledge that David Wright is out indefinitely.

But Murphy got hurt and Ruben Tejada moved back to the position. He returned to the Mets Sunday after a paternity leave. He doubled in his first at-bat.

Tejada was hitting .304 with an .800 OPS in his last 22 games entering Sunday.

Granderson's outfield assist was an unexpected play.

Parnell looked good last night. Two strikeouts and a save.

:smh:

our offense is so inconsistant.

Great outting for Harvey. Good move with Gee.

We need a slugger so bad.

Mets' offense didn't look good last night. Hopefully they will bounce back against RA Dickey.

Morris must be really nervous.

Minors 6.17.15: Steven Matz blanks Salt Lake

LAS VEGAS 5, SALT LAKE 1: Steven Matz continues to knock on the door of a promotion to the majors. Matz tossed seven scoreless innings against the Bees on Wednesday afternoon, slicing his Pacific Coast League ERA to 2.11. Matz (7-4) retired the final 10 batters he faced as Las Vegas won its seventh straight game. He allowed four hits and one walk while striking out five. Matz tossed 87 pitches (53 strikes). He was coming off an outing in which he allowed four runs in four innings and threw 83 pitches against Reno. The 51s broke a scoreless tie with a three-run sixth that included an RBI triple by Matt Reynolds and RBI double by Alex Castellanos. Anthony Recker, serving as DH in his first game with Las Vegas since Aug. 26, 2013, added a two-run homer in the eighth against Jo-Jo Reyes. Salt Lake's lone run came in the ninth against John Church. Wally Backman recorded his 200th victory as Las Vegas manager. He has a .563 winning percentage. Box

So Matz is a groundball pitcher. Perfect.

Oh wow. I totally forget about the son of Greg Vaughn, Cory Vaughn..
