Cosmos A spacetime odyssey 3/9

Discovery is going to make a tv show of a facebook page i effing love science. Its great that science related stuff is getting notice. Watching the cosmos alot of the stuff they talked about i was farmiliar with so i wasnt lost but still some things blew my mind. I wonder how much mainstream america will like and be interested in these kinds of shows and even care.

Glad there's a thread on this... I'm a closet astronerd.

Last nights episode was definitely an introduction for noobs... Hoping it leans towards actual photos and video soon instead of the CG stuff like last night.

Space is ****ing beautiful. Galaxies, Nebulas, Black Holes, Supernovas... Space.

Loved the 1st episode last night...:pimp:

Although NDT can be corny as hell sometimes, he really is a genius...

I really hope we find other types of intelligent life on another planet in my life time...it would be the single greatest discovery in the history of us. (Although IMO we have always had contact with another civilization from another planet but that's topic to discuss at another time...)

Will be tuning in from now on...

“Science is not there for you to cherry-pick. You know, I said this once and it’s gotten a lot of Internet play, I said the good thing about science is that it’s true whether or not you believe in it. All right? I guess you can decide whether or not to believe in it, but that doesn’t change the reality of an emergent scientific truth.”

DVR'd this. It's cool to see so many are looking for it.

Watched a few episodes from the original Carl Sagan Cosmos from 1980 yesterday.

Science rules! Word to Bill Nye The Science Guy

Watched it late last night. Beautifully done. I was a fan of the OG version from the 80s with Sagan so seeing a reboot with NDT done so well was great.

i watched it and loved it. Mind was blown many times. i love knowing how insignificant we truly are.

I missed it yesterday, is this better or at least as good as Through The Wormhole? :nerd:

Just like many religions/beliefs are full of beautiful worded "truth" that often leave people in awe without questioning it; one can also think same goes to mainstream science and astronomy. If NDT told the truth, he wouldn't have a job right now.

There's equations, visual, and physical evidence to back up science though. Although theory is not absolute, there facts to back up the claims, not just fruitless explanations with little evidence other than the word of man. I'm an agnostic and I have an open mind for God but, while scientific theories can be debatable and argued, scientific fact should be treated as common sense based on the sheer evidence to back up and explain it.

I'm a bit cynical towards mainstream science/astronomy.
Expand on this.

What??

What do you mean he wouldn't have a job right now?

What is NDT lying about that's keeping him employed as the director of the Hayden Planetarium and as a world renowned Astrophysicist?

Laws of physics are cut and dry.  If you watch some of NDT's interviews and/or lectures you'd see that there are a volume of things that we simply just don't know about our universe still.  The rate however at which technology is moving forward at this point is faster than it has ever been and it will continue to accelerate at an even higher rate as each day passes and the things we don't know are falling 1 by 1.
Fly through of the GAMA Galaxy Catalogue
from ICRAR  PLUS  4 days ago  NOT YET RATED

The Galaxy and Mass Assembly catalogue is a detailed map of the Universe showing where galaxies are in 3D. This simulated flythrough shows the real positions and images of the galaxies that have been mapped so far. Distances are to scale, but the galaxy images have been enlarged for your viewing pleasure.

Credit: Made by Will Parr, Dr. Mark Swinbank and Dr. Peder Norberg (Durham University) using data from the SDSS and the GAMA surveys. This work was supported by the Ogden Trust, STFC and the Royal Society.

I actually think it would've been cool if Seth was on screen too for a little banter or to maybe take the simpler stuff, and Neil could get a little more intricate with his explanations. Things were pretty basic, but this is for young people, maybe they just wanted to touch on a little of everything from beginning to end in the first ep.

Still...this show is gorgeous.

As long as I've been familiar with who he is, his talks, videos, etc., I had no idea he was from the Bronx. :pimp:

Loved the first episode. The animation was a fantastic touch.
