Is this normal? Happened in the middle of the game, granted it's an old pair (2002) but I've not worn it for more than 10 times...
the outsole is also coming off as you can see.

Old shoes can fall apart no matter what they're made of, especially if they were barely worn, from 2002, and used in a basketball game.

You not wearing them over 10 times in 12 years does not help them in terms of aging. Not wearing them makes the glue brittle.

all my vc shox had the same problem...and i wore mines regularly (at least 3x a week for open gym/ IM games) during that time period.

I own almost all released vc shox 1 thru 5 and I will tell u by u not wearing them much when they first dropped, the glue never set right so it didn't bond properly. This happened to me a few times.with ds pairs I decided to unds

And btw all early shox had glue bonding issues... remember the original shox model "R4" was recalled along side another model

wow didn't know of the wearing/glue bonding thing at all. I stopped playing 12 years ago and only decided to start playing again and those were the pair I last wore.
I have another DS VC shox in different colour, I guess I shouldn't even try wearing that for ball now, there's not really a chance that different colour batches would be any different right?

I would try some shoe goo on those.
weird thing is if you used them more often they would have probably lasted longer.
