Unless they know stuff that they aren't sharing with the public (very possible), I could've stood up there and told the world that the plane is in the Indian Ocean. Anyone with half a brain could've concluded that given the facts about the flight that we already know.
I just want to know why. This seems like a move to save face and provide "closure" for the families since the search has been inconclusive and unproductive so far.

The "why" or "how" part is a valid question though. We know for a fact that the plane diverted from its intended flight path. We know for a fact that the transponders were disabled somehow. Why/how did that happen?
You really think that the families of those folks didn't already know that plane was in the ocean somewhere? Of course they did. They were hanging on for answers on WHY it happened. They didn't get that and they may not ever get that. Stating the obvious that it crashed somewhere in the Indian Ocean isn't really closure when there's no answers to why, IMO. Hopefully those questions will be answered in time.

right? it's not even right to dump someone over text but they can't have the decency to call every single one of those families and tell them the horrible news? That's like the police or a doctor texting a family that their child was found dead or died from cancer, it's basic human decency. All they've been through and you hit em with an SMS [emoji]128528[/emoji] deep down they probably all knew this was the case but that's a lack of tact on their part

Declaring a group of people dead should never be done via text message. They should have been individually contacted or this should have been spoken at a press conference. THEN e-mail/text communication should have gone out.

The difference is that they just don't want to believe it, and understandably so.
So logically the next step is finding out WHY their family member died. You're reaching if you're saying that these families are just gonna sit back and say "okay, the plane crashed and they're dead". They'll want answers and they deserve them because this wasn't your textbook plane crash.

we are simply voyeurs, we don't matter...and the situation really doesn't have matter to us in the grand scheme of things. that's why we can get away with wild speculation and treating the event like a reality show. the crash is not about us, once you logoff you can easily go back to the rest of your life. Those people, the families, are logged on into this event 24/7 its not a simple debate or game for them. That's why its more difficult for them to come to the conclusion that their loved ones are gone.

You haven't said anything that I haven't already alluded to, brah. Also, I like how it's cool for you to tell me that I'm just an observer (which I obviously am) and that what I think doesn't matter.
