NT, convince me "cutting the cord" is a good idea

This is the sentiment that I'm concluding after reading so many responses. I don't think It's a good idea to "cut the cord". Like someone said, "sports is the achilles heel".
I'm already this way. I only follow a handful of shows, and the shows I do watch--I get them online for free.
I know what you mean. I fall under the same category, but it's the sports man. I can't give up the sports.

The $30 package gives you MSG though? Part of the reason why I can't get rid of cable is because of MSG and ESPN.

I also totally forgot about TNT. I never watch anything on that channel unless they're showing a basketball game. Having NBA TV would also be nice to have.

Yup, i have all the basic cable channels I care about, MSG, SNY, ESPN, FX, etc.

No NFL Network or NBATV though :x

damn. I don't know a damn thing about xbmc. Wasn't aware until you mentioned it. I really do have to check this out. I want to watch small wonder again

just to give you an idea of how it works.. repos have gui kinda like apps. lets say you pick the retrotv repo. itll give a brief description of the repo/app. youd click on it.... then itll have # - all the abc's or have tv show categories... from there you could search by category or by first # letter of the show...

from there you would select show then a dvd or tv show cover will appear... then it will show the seasons... from there you can click on the episode you want or click all to play an entire season of a show....then it will ask your internet speed and based on that will show you what available video options you have based on what your internet speed can handle...

then you will choose...along with some shows subtitles....after that the repo will go back to the show you choose and will show a brief description of the episode etc...(that depends if you d/l the imbd database app)

from there you will press start it will ask do you wanna watch windowed with the on screen options showing ie... stop pause play rewind etc... or full screen to which you can still use these options but there are certain button commands to do so...or you can use remote if you have one that can be synced...

that's pretty much how all the repos go with the exception of the live tv streams...to which they work a little different...

also you can listen to radio ie Pandora...spotium etc.. as well as view podcast shows ustream shows etc...

hulu a believe is still cracked and free... and as far as Netflix etc... you can use it but it will ask for you username/password etc... from there it works the same as it would any other device...

Also sometimes shows etc.. may get interrupted or paused because an update notification of a repo is available to which you can ignore and continue watching...

also there is an option to record and save shows to which it is set up similar to your typical windows filesystem ala will show folders etc file tree and you can save them to hard drive external drive etc,,,

I use to use it back in the day to record and put old cartoons etc...like she ra carebears etc to dvd so my girls could watch...

overall it isn't to bad.... only thing is sometimes live tv channels maybe down for a myriad of reason such as the cable/internet being down in the area to which the stream is coming from, and depending where you live and where the stream is from you might get shows earlier or later then you expected aka like if you in la... and turn to a channel that is streaming from like nyc... that primetime show youre use to watching like a ncis at 8pm your time would be showing at like 5pm your time due to the feed being from nyc and it is 8pm their time...

Yo. What is roku? I know they have separate channels or something. I already have Xbox and ps3. I just don't understand the other channels roku claims they have. Is roku the middle man so I'd still need to buy subscriptions and all that? I already have Netflix.

its basically the hardware used to access the channels and it is more or less like a more user friendly interface... You can essentially do the same thing with a pc/laptop/iPhone/tablet...

Its moreso a more esthetically pleasing approach as oppose to have a laptop/tablet etc... with an hdmi and cables etc...draping all across your floor.

Also many of the channels etc on roku you do have to pay a fee for that xbmc offers for free. sure you have to download the repos etc... but they are free nonetheless.

in other words roku is in a sense like a cable box that has a preset already configured channels repos of tv/movie feeds that eliminates d/l adding apps repos etc.. and because of that many of these apps/channels etc come with a cost....

Plus not that it matters xbmc you can add streaming torrent sites to stream torrent movies... and even hacked xxx sites.. like bra%%ers empflix so on and so forth...

It's free to a certain degree. You can't watch SC or live games unless you are a paid subscriber and your provider is available through activation.
you can even hack and get those free or bypass subscription especially with an I device ie thru flex2 or deb files....

Aight. I see there is a dark side to Xbox i will need to look into. I just stream off a laptop if I want. Not perfect but it works.

That's when use the other websites the other poster posted. Since gbox can use flash it is all good!

Eventually I wanna get into using xbmc but I would need to do it right, I have it connected to every TV in the house, convert all my movies and shows to digital and build a legit home server. Butttt that's just gonna take way too much time and money

What do you guys use for storage anyways?

for me I use a dedicated pc... its really the only reason I have a desktop tbh...that and play Microsoft exclusive games...(gets me outta buying an xbox)

I have a 2tb external hard drive and a media center pc with apt connection aka hdmi, speaker hook up etc.... on my man cave tv... In my bedroom I just hook it up to my laptop cause it can send hdmi wireless... and everywhere else I don't have it at all.

I mean if you used a hub of some sort then yea it would be on any tv with internet capabilities but since it is one feed you literally could only watch one at a time... well sorta if you changed repos/apps/channels then it would change on all the tvs... And if you are gonna use it wireless you would need a pretty good/strong router....with highspeed broadband especially if you use other devices like tablets, game systems, cell phone etc...

As far as movies etc... I record them and use a ftp like openssh and send transfer/send the files etc... to my ps3 and play the movies thru there.

Bruh, copped an ouya, loaded xbmc, added superrepo and fusion for other repos. This thing is amazing, def grown since I first modded my og xbox with xbmc. Best ones for live channels?
