And there's your answer.  Post numbers are absolute, not relative - and, as an added benefit, they aren't approximate.  Saying "somewhere on page 20" is a bit like telling a delivery person to leave your package "somewhere on Evergreen terrace."  Asking users to locate content on a specific page when an EXACT post number is available is a completely unnecessary chore.

Each post has a fixed post number. Click on it or copy it, and you have a direct link to that exact post.

Sometimes, it makes more sense to ask users to adapt to the software than the inverse.  We have a new platform with many benefits over the previous system.  I don't like the idea of rolling back one of those benefits because certain thread starters are still stuck using old conventions from an antiquated forum site that neither we nor anyone of consequence still uses.

At root, this isn't a software problem.  It's a behavioral problem.

If you see a thread where the author is directing users to a particular page rather than a particular post - be the change you want to see.  Send them a PM and say, "directing users to a specific page is imprecise and confusing, since we can all have different posts per page settings.  Why not direct them to a post number instead?  It's just as easy, and it's more accurate for everyone?"

Eventually, this new, superior method will become the norm and the problem will be solved without asking everyone to forfeit their ability to customize the forum display to their liking.

I'm not complaining. I'm not *****ing about this. Making the posts per page standard wouldn't hurt the content or anything. I just fail to see the advantage of confusion.

There's no advantage to "confusion," but let's not confuse a "posts per page" setting with "confusion."  It's not the posts per page setting that's creating confusion; it's the practice of telling thread participants to "go look on page X."

There's no reason to keep that convention when we have absolute post numbers.  None.  There is a considerable benefit to offering users the ability to customize the number of posts per page to their liking.

Meth, thank you for this thankless job that you do.
It is appreciated.

People forget, this is an "option" that users were BEGGING us for on the old platform.  We were constantly being asked to increase the number of posts per page.  Now, we give people a "best of both worlds" solution and there's still complaint - even when a user-driven solution is available.

The advantage there is pretty obvious.

Let's remember, too, that giving users the option to show 50 posts per page costs us money.  We're giving users twice the content with the same number of ads.  How this is interpreted as anything less than a gift is beyond me.

I'm glad people seem to appreciate the impossibility of our position.  Hundreds of users can ask us for something over the years and when we finally deliver, we get people asking "Why did you do that?  It was fine the way it was!"

Thanks for the clarification, Meth.

Bumped because I was going to make the same thread.

I have asked for the same thing for a few years now. I agree. It also helps when you have real world friends and tell them to, "Go to page _____" and you are all on the same page (no pun).

Good stuff Lobotimo

Feel your pain lobo. It's really unnecessary and makes looking for updates cumbersome and unintuitive

I think back on ezboard it was 20 pppg, then from then on it was automatically 30. I don't know if it was then (on yuku) we started getting the option to choose but I think huddler was 30 but everybody is making use of the option.

Ever since somebody said they do 100 pppg in a thread I tried it out and haven't turned back. Way less times I have to click to get to the next pg and believe it or not pgs load faster.

As for thread updates and notifications, it is a bit of an issue but I try to do the math assuming most ppl still have their setting on 30pppg or 20 anymore than that I give up.
