Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates isn’t going to sugarcoat things: The increasing power of automation technology is going to put a lot of people out of work. Business Insider reports that Gates gave a talk at the American Enterprise Institute think tank in Washington, DC this week and said that both governments and businesses need to start preparing for a future where lots of people will be put out of work by software and robots.

“Software substitution, whether it’s for drivers or waiters or nurses… it’s progressing,” Gates said. “Technology over time will reduce demand for jobs, particularly at the lower end of skill set… 20 years from now, labor demand for lots of skill sets will be substantially lower. I don’t think people have that in their mental model.”

As for what governments should do to prevent social unrest in the wake of mass unemployment, the Microsoft cofounder said that they should basically get on their knees and beg businesses to keep employing humans over algorithms. This means perhaps eliminating payroll and corporate income taxes while also not raising the minimum wage so that businesses will feel comfortable employing people at dirt-cheap wages instead of outsourcing their jobs to an iPad.

Been saying it for a while now, maybe folks will start to wake up. Those wages will drop to $0 soon for many.

As Business Insider points out, The Economist earlier this year predicted that high-paying jobs such as accountants, real estate sales agents and commercial pilots would all lose their jobs to software within the next 20 years.

If they were really about that action they should make some robotic hookers. There's numerous reasons why this will work

Lower prostitution in the cities.

We won't have to worry about our daughters turning into ******

We can still get out nuts off and not have to worry about diseases.

We can throw the ***** in the closet and not have to worry about catching a case.

We don't have to worry about them snitching about how small our pipe (hypothetically) may be, or how fast (allegedly) we climax

It's not government but education that really needs to pay attention. This archaic 'go to college' routine is gonna leave a lot if people outta work. Cisco, aerospace engineering, advanced robotics and mechanics need to be taught in highschool, i believe they are up to. More vocational schools. We've had this same 'revolution' I'm our economy before in the late '70s. Plants closed down, towns died. We need to shift what we are teaching, there will still be jobs, but less server jobs and more 'robot repair' jobs. As robots become more ubiquitous, what we need now is a change of ideas. - Bad Religion.

Been happening for years. U.S. is moving to a more high-skill service industry economy

jobs like entrepreneurs, Dr's, engineers, basically STEM jobs have been in demand for years. Really doubt accountants are going to be phased out, financial services, bankruptcy processing and the like are not easy to outsource.

Instead of *****ing about income inequality, people need to wake up and realize they should be complaining about being unprepared for the future. ***** about jobs not offering training programs and the school system pushing regurgitation on you.

i dont believe that... machines cant do everything... look at the subways in nyc theres machines all over the place to buy a tickets but sometimes you need a clerk to ask questions for what subway to take... some people dont have smartphones or dont know how to read a map

Those people themselves have become..obsolete.

welp looks like we all gotta sell dope. and pimp. and rap. and play in the NBA. A part of me's kinda wanted to do all that nyway so ill b aight

This is going to ring true to an extreme extent... we haven't even begun to scratch the surface on 3D printing however and that alone is going to make for some ridiculous things in the future.

Layoffs left and right, a lot of companies closing their stores, I personally see more and more homeless people up and down NYC.. This ain't gonna get any better.. bout to be a lot of unemployed people over the next year or two. I guess when everyone is out of work, then Bill Gates can fully apply his methods to reduce 80% of the population (or w/e # he put out there) since at this point, everyone will be useless. Makes sense.

I disagree with the comment about accountants. Maybe I'm biased because I'm an accountant myself........sure, the general ledger entries, the debits and credits, yes you could have a machine automate those.

But we deal with a lot of grey areas. Businesses are complex, therefore arriving at the right accounting conclusion can get complex as well. If we lived in a world where companies just sold simple widgets, then I'm sure accounting would be easy. But accounting for a software giant like google? That's not easy and there is a lot of judgement required where a human brain is needed. I'm not getting replaced by Wall-E.

I'm an accountant too and I agree with you. Who is going to audit these companies? You would trust a computer to audit a computer?

As long as we don't have robotic RNs and robotic CRNAs, I, for one, welcome our new robot overlords.
