Depending on when you're going, if it's not too cold you could do a Segway tour of Grant Park, Millenium Park and/or Soldier Field.

There are 4 or 5 places off of or on State Street downtown where you could take her for a show (*The Chicago Theatre, *(Ford) Oriental Theatre, *Cadillac Palace, *Bank of America Theatre and *Goodman Theatre).

*The Bean @ Millenium Park
*Willis Tower Skydeck
John Hancock Building
Soldier Field
Magnificient Mile - Shopping

RESTAURANTS -
Giordanos - Chicago Pizza
Girl & The Goat - foodie-type restaurant
*Epic Burger
M Burger
*Garrett Popcorn Shops
Nacional 27 - Latin restaurant

BARS
ROOF @ the Wit Hotel - rooftop bar
J. Parker @ Hotel Lincoln - rooftop bar
The Aviary - they specialize in creating new types of drinks

*Within walking distance (5-8 blocks) of your hotel.

That's the stuff off the top of my head. I moved from Chicago in December after 3+ years.

EDIT: Added some places.

Sears tower is cool but so many damn tourists...people sleep on the hancock building...

ultimate ambiance (pricey tho) for restaurants is the Signature Room on the 95th in the hancock building...

can also go grab a drink at their bar on the 96th floor...

OP - FYI that the Sears Tower is now called the Willis Tower. A cabbie would know that, but any Joe on the street in Chicago may or may not.

Definitely going here, thanks!!

Also going to hit up that improv club...this is coming along...

Bruh, i'm here for my externship until May.

Def the signature room.
Def walk around the Bean and Buckingham fountain in millenium park
Def go get some deep dish
Def walk down Magnificent Mile.

I'm gonna be near the Loop this weekend myself near Wacker Drive where the river is.

Remember....Tap, Tap, Pull.

Also Jake Melnicks and Gibsons are some good spots for wings and drinks.

If you're downtown hit Portillo's or Lou Malnati's
pimp.gif

Second City for a comedy show.

Sunda and Frontera Grill are two of my favorite spots to eat.

I hit up the touristy spots:
Wrigley Field
Lincoln Park
Millenium park
Digiordano's for deep dish
Uno's pizzaria out in Schaumburg
Magnificient Mile
Gibson's
Skydeck
the "el"
roamed around Oak Park

I just went for a weekend 2 weeks ago. I'm mad i didn't know about the restaurant in the Hancock Building.

But this is basically what i covered in like 1.5 days.........

Good breakfast spot: Wildberry's (right under the Prudential building.)
Ice Cream Custard Spot: Scooters (i think its near Wrigley Field)

Some landmarks/sightseeing:
Willis Tower Skydeck for the view
Cloudgate aka "The Bean"
Crown Fountain
United Center for the MJ statue

And the obvious pizza spots:
Giordanos
Unos

What's better in terms of location?  The W on Lakeshore or the W @ city center

Get drinks at "Three Dots and a Dash". The drinks are awesome. The DJ is good and if you put your name on the list you can get a table for free. Great food, restaurant quality bar snacks. Plus, it's a great place to go with your lady because you can dance, you won't be bumping into a million people, and her friends won't be harassed by thirsty guys all night.

Wieners Circle is good for a laugh (if you decide to take it in that direction) and has a pretty good hotdog too...

although the drunk depaul kids crowd it up on late nights

I was there last year and Second City for sure. Really talented people there. One of the girls there is now a writer for SNL.

People say no to Sears but I feel like you have to go and going at day is different than night too. Also go to Big Star was cool at Wicker park area. A taco place with tons of drinks and good ambiance (http://bigstarchicago.com/). I went to some steak places but man, so high brow there and hated being around people like that. I had a guy next to us talking smack about Obama the whole time. I mean who talks like that at a restaurant? Rich people that thing their opinions should be heard among everyone.

Some of my pics I took:

Honestly there's no truly wrong answer since both are downtown. You'll have quick access to restaurants/shopping/entertainment either way. But for what you've already stated you're trying to achieve, city center. From the city center you can walk to all the places mentioned (and feel fairly safe between 7am-7pm). If you're on Lakeshore, you're closer to Magnificient Mile, John Hancock building, Navy Pier, some other restaurants not mentioned, etc. But you'd have to cab or bus it to Grant and Millenium Parks (The Bean) etc, UNLESS you didn't mind making your girl walk 10+ blocks.

The real question is do you want to be able to walk to a ton of places that you'll have interest in during the day? If yes, city center.

I use to work just SE (almost cattycorner) of this post office. It's 2 blocks N of the W City Center.

Magnificent Mile is like our downtown in SF but on steroids. Honestly if you live in a major city, you won't be missing much there. I found shopping the last thing I wanted to do there. Saint Alfreds wasn't really even worth visiting but with online shopping, I feel like these street wear shops are kind of mellow dramatic.

If you are into taking photos or just want to take Instagram pics or what not, the bean and the fountain are pretty much near each other.

Not my pic:

This is near by as well:
