JAMES BOND movie thread: RIP Sir Sean Connery - NO TIME TO DIE 10/08/21

I love how Bond and the girl just dressed up in formal dinner outfits for no reason. And Bautista comes marching in a full three piece plus tie. Like was he just hiding and waiting for them to dress up and attend dinner before attacking?

I will admit, the opening scene in Mexico City was great though. And i did like Q's involvement within the movie. Train fight scene was good too, except for how it ends.

the biggest things that didnt sit well with me:

- From the very first time he was introduced, it was obvious that C was a snake.

- they couldve easily wrote out Monica Belucci's part to give more screentime to Waltz's villain

- The big bad turns out to be Bond's stepbrother. Straight out of an Austin Powers movie :x

- Bond and the chick are already "in love" after just 2 days together :x

- its like they used tired, classic Bond cliches just to throw them in there (could be why it feels like its going through the motions because we all know all those tropes already):

  • car chase (meh, suspense wasnt there for me). check
  • henchman that doesn't talk. check.
  • villain hiding in a secret lair in the middle of no where. check.
  • Bond willingly walks into the villains lair where he is outnumbered. check.
  • Bond torture scene (he wanted to erase Bond's memories or something?? idk). check.

Does Spectre feel like a part 1 in a 2 part movie or is it just me? but now Craig isnt even sure he wants to return :smh:

You're exactly right.. It's like they had a checklist.. And even within that everything seemed uninspired.. They even sorta make jokes about it

During the car cash when bond is on the phone with money penny, she's casually looking through the fridge.. In the hotel room home boy's daughter makes fun of her falling into his arms

They even make Monica bellucci just seem meh.. And she somehow had more chemistry with Neo in the matrix sequel

Nothing waltz did seemed all that threatening and this is the dude who played the Jew hunter

So much potential with this movie.. Just wasted

Like we knew waltz was coming back.. We knew the girl would get grabbed

Even during the opening scene things were sloppy.. Like when bond and the girl walk in the room he didn't close the door behind him, so obviously the cameraman following them did, but I don't know if they were trying to go for a long shot or not

And for as cool as the whole scene was visually, the chase was kinda meh and nowhere near stuff or impact of previous Craig bond films

The Spectre car chase in Rome paled in comparison to Quantum of Solace's opening chase.

Agreed with the above poster when he said the studio pushed for humor.

Really felt like hey we're just going through the motions

that's EXACTLY how I feel.

Casino Royale established that craig could carry the franchise on his own
Quantam of Solace was a casualty of that writers strike
Skyfall(i actually can rewatch no problem) was the full circle reboot with the intro to Q, Moneypenny and a new M

It seems as soon Mendes signed that dotted line, the studio took away the liberties that made SKyfall the hit it was. Forcing him to connect all the movies.(which I kinda appreciated but didn't at the same time)
Movie was so predictable too.
The only scene I enjoyed was the train fight scene and the Q, Bond banter, which gave it that classic feel to me. The ending was the hugest disappointment of all and it seems that Tarantino is the ONLY director who knows what to do with Christoph Waltz.
I already had low expectations going into the Spectre based off the fact that Mendes already said Skyfall was the dream Bond movie he wanted to make(and it shows) Anytime a director doesn't feel like there's more story to tell, don't badger or throw more money at him, just a get a fresh take
and also Da Gawd Roger Deakins wasn't shooting it(another reason Skyfall got praise) Almost every frame of Skyfall could be a portrait.

-opening
-car chase scene
-the plane/car chase scene in the snow
-and the finale(which seemed to be a hybrid casino royale and quantam of solace setup)
were all horribly executed

Felt like I was watching a Pierce Brosnan bond movie but if i had to take it a just a bit more seriously since the gadgets and action never got out of hand, too much of Bond trying to have a pun or great comeback after almost EVERY SINGLE LINE said to him(a trademark I had HATED from Brosnan)

I'll say one thing SOny knows how to make a trailer thats for sure.
and if they get Nolan(they'd be incredibly lucky as Nolan has an outstanding relationship with Warner Bros. and Warners would probably broker some profit deal) they best believe he's writing it himself with his bro, neal purvis will have to fall back

"seems that Tarantino is the ONLY director who knows what to do with Christoph Waltz"

Cuz quentins all about dialogue.

I just got back. I enjoyed it.
My boo Monica Baelucci was wasted.

Needed more Bautista. He had Bond SHOOK on that train.

I think Christophs scar is on the wrong side of his face... could be wrong.

Casino Royale torture scene was way better

I had little clue as to why Bond kept going everywhere he went. I underdtood why he went to L'Americain but i didnt quite catch what lead him to everywhere else

The Title sequence was sponsored by

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie

And I got to see the Star Wars trailer in IMAX :pimp:

wasnt the best Daniel Craig bond but I enjoyed it I'm guessing they wanted to tell the story of bond more than just show action and car chases.

definitely the weakest of all of the daniel craig bond films..

terrible pacing..typically all bond films begin with a chase..that didn't start until 7 minutes into the movie..which turned out to be really good but something seemed off with the scene sequentially..I was thinking the whole time while watching the movie that it is gonna pick up at some point..never happened

waltz was really good..but he just wasn't evil enough..javier bardem (skyfall) was one of the best villains I've ever seen..but bardem is easily one of the best actors out today..as others have said was def expecting more with waltz' character

the women/the helicopter/snow mountain chase/ car chase (those cars holy sh**)/special effects..all great

The story itself was ehh..I wanna say something that's obvious but I don't want to spoil it to anyone who hasn't seen it yet

Another thing I noticed is that there was no cohesion with any of the other characters..it seems they were jus there..there really weren't any jokes throughout the entire film

I just hope my dude Batista flourished as a villain henchman.

Craig said he broke Batista's nose for real in a fight scene. :wow:

My boy saw it last night and described it as "meh". I'm seeing it tonight, looking forward to it

Saw it last night. First rating was and I quote "9 out of 10, would watch again". After thinking it over however i'd lower that rating to a 7.5 or 8, which is still very respectable. Casino Royale was just plain the best film in this branch of the series, hands down. And while a lot of people liked Skyfall, I have personally always preferred Quantum of Solace and in fact never thought there was anything wrong with the movie. I was genuinely shocked months later to hear that people had been disappointed. That being said, I thought Spectre was better overall than Quantum of Solace and Skyfall, but that it didn't manage to live up to the hype.

When all is said and done, both Spectre and Blofield failed to present themselves as credible threats. Yeah they have all this power and can watch everybody and kill whoever they want whenever, but in terms of dramatic tension I just never for a second believed that they were going to win. Now, this obviously wasn't going to end in Bond's death, just like Dark Knight was never going to end in Batman's death, but there's always the chance to establish a suitable amount of tension for you to wonder if this might really be it for our hero. Dark Knight had it, Casino Royale had it, this film didn't. Also, i'd probably say that the previous three films had better antagonists. But I did enjoy Blofield being a person from Bond's past and the whole "****oo" thing. If anything I think Blofield might've been better used had he never been revealed throughout this film until the finale, and then have another film where the main conflict is directly confronting him and taking him down.

In terms of opening fights and car chases, this film wasn't as good as either Casino Royale or Quantum of Solace, though it was better than Skyfall in my opinion.

I'm all for Bond banging random chicks that he's just met, but this girl's talking about she loves him after what? Two days?!  Minor issue, but that just struck me as incredibly dumb and unnecessary to throw in there. Same with Bond talking about "I'll find you after this is over", Blofield talking about "Only she could understand you" and Bond heading off to who knows where with her at the end. Just seems like they tried to make her the equal/successor to Vesper in this Bond's life and it completely fell flat. (Became extremely evident during the conversation on the train, which they pretty much tried to match with the one from Casino Royale years earlier)

I'm on the fence about Spectre being behind the events of the previous three films. Given the scale of it, it makes sense and many people always suspected it as early as Quantum of Solace, but still. Eh. Just not sure if it works for me personally, as in I don't really think it was necessary. That being said, I did like all the previous films, the older events and villains being acknowledged. I was disappointed in fact that Vesper wasn't mentioned in Skyfall, but I enjoyed seeing that her death, years later, still causes Bond pain in this film. (Was also disappointed that Bond didn't take and watch her interrogation video that Mr. White had in his safehouse. Wasted opportunity for us to see, easily, the best Bond Girl from the Craig films again) So this one had its pros and cons. In the end the payoff was worth it, and the finale where Blofield taunts Bond with pics of characters from the past film was great.

"C" was a terribly obvious villain from the start. There was never a single second where I believed he wouldn't turn out to be on the side of the bad guys, and I in fact hoped he wouldn't so that I could be surprised. Nope. Mallory was handled much better in Skyfall. Presented as a new and somewhat mysteroius figure that'd be interferring with MI6, and there's the possibility that he might turn out to be working with the bad guys from the inside. There's an even chance for it to go either way as he's poised against our heroes, but also makes valid points. "C" was just talking out of his *** and being a douche about it, so of course he ends up as a villain.

Mr. Hinx (Bautista's character), no complaints. Job well done.

Soundtrack, no complaints, probably my favorite out of all four films.

Finale at the old MI6 building, well done, but I didn't care for the boat chase afterwards, or Bond's finale conversation/confrontation with Blofield. That was incredibly dumb.

Bond letting that sexy *** prototype car fall into the river :smh: :smh: :smh: That'll hurt my soul forever.

Beyond that, I don't think the fight's or anything else was a major drop in quality from the previous films, from the Craig Era or before. I appreciated Q's expanded role and that of M as well, along with Moneypenny once more showing up outside of the office. The opening fight on the helicopter, while not as good as other openings, was still great. The airplane chasing the snowmobiles was great, Bond escaping Spectre's facility was great, so when the action is happening it remains exciting as always. The "meat" of this film, Bond travelling around the world to hunt down Blofield and discover what Spectre is all about, even crashing one of their meetings at one point, kept me entertained throughout. I could already imagine myself going back and watching this film again, whereas i've never wanted to do that with Skyfall (Though I have) In fact, after they first capture Silva in Skyfall I feel that the film went downhill and it started to lose my interest. Whereas Quantum's progression was just ok, but then I thought the finale out in the desert was amazing. In terms of character, Craig's Bond remains spot-on for what's been established in this timeline beforehand and I thought his performance was as good as always. Not the best Bond film, or the best Craig film, but it was still good.

So I guess it was no truth to the rumor of a Civil War preview during the previews of the bond movie.

hmm so general consensus is meh to fun, but not the best of all the craig era bonds.

so nothing mind blowing but fun enough to buy a ticket on a monday night? :nerd:

I'm laughin at everyone bothered or upset about it bein predictable, or havin a checklist to run thru.

It's the TWENTY FOURTH Bond film, of ******* course you always know he's going to win, or they'll have taglist lines, setups, scenes etc. That's what James Bond movies are.

Bond. James, Bond.
Shaken, not stirred.
Licence to kill.
007 is on his own
Multiple beautiful women.
Wearing an impeccable suit during a fight.
Gadgets.
Insane cars.

Car chase, plane chase, helicopter, boat, train, multiple countries, snow, desert, city.

EVERY movie has that **** guys.

Stupid complaints to be complaining about what the entire franchise is built on.

I liked a lot of it. Not a perfect film, but still very well done.
LOVE connecting all four films. The photos, the cameos by White and M, the mentions, tying all of the orgs to Spectre, Blowfeld, all of it. That is your unique angle within the Bond universe. The way they've tied stories/scripts together.
Loved the scenery. The locales they used were only surpassed by Royale.

Royale of course is the best, but to me, Spectre was every bit the equal to Skyfall. And I think Solace is very, very underrated. All 4 are very, very good.

I hope they do a 5th, but I understand if they move on as well.

7.5/8

So is that it? We get a "reboot" after this with a new Bond?

They're not really reboots. Most bond movies aren't fully connected as a sequel. I think they decided to do it with Daniel Craig's bond.

But in sense, having a new bond will definitely give the series a new feel as Craig did after brosnan

Man but Craig just plays bond so well if they do a new bone hope they keep it dark and not cheesy like before :frown:

^^^
Feel the same way. Not sure what all that turmoil was with the producers and wanting a new person for bond. Craig's been one of my favorite if not my overall favorite
