On a 25-11 straight party-line vote, with Republicans supporting the testing and Democrats opposing, the Senate approved the bill, which would require the Department of Human Services to set up a pilot drug-testing program in three counties. The counties have not been selected yet.

The bill included $500,000 to pay for the drug testing, which would be administered if DHS had a suspicion that the welfare recipient was using illegal drugs. If they refuse the test or test positive, they would no longer receive their benefits.

What do you all think about this?

I think it's fair. If you can afford spend money on drugs, you shouldn't be asking for govt. money.

I know tons of people in there late 20s-30s on welfare, but popping mollies like Steve Francis and up in the club like Dirk Nowitzki all turned up off ecstasy and other illegal substances, including that smack. These are folks that need to get their life in order before they stick their hand out and ask for some government guap.

Good. Like you said, if you're buying drugs and using then you shouldn't expect the government to help you get through life.

I honestly don't like the idea. I understand that it helps to regulate who receives welfare, but where is the funding coming from to administer the drug tests. That's not cheap, not cheap at all.

Just another way to isolate a particular demographic.

It's 2014. And the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Ehh, I think the cost to administer drug tests would actually (in the long run) turn out to be less than the cost to provide assistance to hundreds of thousands of drug abusers who don't want to help themselves.

Yea, what demographic

Yea what demographic?

The only demographic that they are isolating are "drug users". There are drug users from all walks of life..Black, Caucasian, Hispanic and Asian. If you use drugs and are constantly having your hand out for government money, you better have your other hand out giving away your crack pipe/syringe/whatever

I'm relatively ignorant but wouldn't this drive certain drug users towards harder substances?

i believe (could be wrong, so don't quote me) that opiates/cocaine (no idea about crack) stay in a person's system much shorter than THC, which is fat soluble.

I'm not too sure about that, but I'm sure that the govt would do maybe monthly check ins or so. It's just wrong that we, the taxpayers, should be paying to support people who dont deserve the support (drug addicts/ people who live in projects yet have brand new Mercedes Benzes and BMWs)

I don't see anything in the bill to actual help the people that have a drug problem.

I am not against them doing this, but instead of just taking them off welfare and washing your hands of them, set up a program to help them become clean.

Yep. This is exactly what this is. The man trying to keep us down.

No accountability for the welfare recipients who somehow have money to buy weed, coke, and pills.

:rolleyes

they need do this for ny, nj, ct

I feel like being taken off welfare is enough to make a drug addict clean up their ways. They're either going to:
1) kick the habit so they can have more money in their pocket (that they would spend on dope) and possibly get welfare in the future

2) start robbing and committing crimes

Hopefully they pick #1

I was thinking more of the latter :\ we'll wait and see though

This was tried in Florida, ended up costing the state more and the positive testing was very minimal. Just another way to demonize the poor.

It did help that the testing clinics were owned by the governors wife though, no conflict of interest there.
