The Timepiece Thread vol: READ THE 1st POST!!!

In regards to white gold/rhodium coating, its no different than putting a premium wax or ceramic coating on your high end cars paint... Or suede/leather protection on your nice shoes

Its about longevity and appearance  makes sense, its just a little unusual to hear in terms of jewelry/gold especially gold if you are not in the know. My Platinum Patek 5960 had rhodium finishing, I didn't ever think twice about it actually.

As for TAG, watch 'snobs' will shun it, they aren't the real collectors or WIS however.

TAG still makes a great product, trust me !!!!! They have some outstanding quality/pieces I've handled in recent years

I am not a jeweler nor do I pretend know the process of mixing the alloys

but I recently purchased a 8mm white gold chain and 18mm white gold bracelet from Daniel's Jewelry, who has been in business for over 20 years and I've been doing business with for many years and trust his professional opinion and if you ever looked in the jewelry thread he is the go to for cuban links

And from the way he explained it to me was, that there is two different methods to achieving white gold, one is rhodium plating the yellow gold, which will wear down over sometime and have yellowish hue after sometime, and then second is actually mixing the alloys, including rhodium, platinum and/or palladium to achieve the desired whiteness

He also explained to me that is why why white gold is usually a little more expensive than yellow due to the expense of the different precious metals used to fabricate it

When I was inquiring about the purchase I was under the impression that the only way to get white gold was rhodium plating, he highly recommend that I didn't get it rhodium plated, although he would of done it for me I wanted, and then he explained the process to me

I decided against it and had him fabricate me one from scratch

He has a lifetime warranty on all his pieces and guaranteed that it will not need to be plated with rhodium to bring it luster back, it will just need to be cleaned and polished every once in a while to buff out the scratches

To be fair, Tag has created some bad watches too. Like I said, they are all over the place. They can make such great watches with very good in-house movements that it can be considered high-end and even compete with the best of them but then they make cheaper watches that is kind of a rip-off (like the one above) with eta movements. Again, I don't hate Tag but I could see where others are coming from. Heuer was overall a highly respectable brand then some Japanese company bought them and added Tag to the name and there was a compromise there where it just became all about marketing, cheap movements and some bad quality control in their products.

I own 2 Carerra Chronos that I'm fond of and that will probably be it for me.

Though the Monaco has grown on me quite a bit. Didn't care for the shape at first but over the years I've come around.

what are your guys thoughts on the 1887 movement, I know there is a lot of debate about on the WUS forums, primarily it being based off seiko movement,

I really like the Carrera Chronos also and felt the same about the Monaco, but I as I get older the square case shape is beginning to grow me

I don't really mind that movement, I think it is perfectly fine. I think Tag did try to kind of hide it and kind of got busted and those who are always on the edge of their seats to jump at Tag any chance they have quickly found a reason to hate on them with it.

Funny thing is in the past few years Seiko has gotten really big watch lovers goes wet for anything Grand Seiko these days and has becomes that brand that people go balls to the wall protecting and they just got to post in every forums and tell everyone that will listen that there is no brand better. People comparing it to Patek and Lange and Vacheron and AP, etc.... If you;'re on WUS you'd think Seiko paid these people.

I mean Grand Seikos are great watches, no doubt but I can see how it can leave a bad taste in peoples mouth to pay Rolex prices for them when you can go to a Macys and see the same logo on $100 watches. But the GS movement is so revered that I think it might have replaced Omega as that brand that can do no wrong. I think Tag made the purchase at the wrong time, if Tag does it now it'll probably be seen as a positive than a negative before GS got really famous.

Exactly RFX, i noticed that also on WUS, a lot of GS riders

I actually have a Seiko Outlet close to me, and stop by a couple months ago, they had two Grand Seiko's in and one was a limited run of like 500 and they were asking around $8k for it at the outlet price.

I tried both of them on and IMO while they both felt well made and I can appreciate the movement aspect of these pieces, which is the biggest draw in these imo, there was just something about the feel of them that they felt slightly less, than other brands in that range, like Breitling, Omega, Rolex and the like

Me personally I would rather speed that amount on a piece that I actually love the aesthetics of it and the build quality feels better and IMO that includes Tag, out of the pieces I have tried on in store, I like the look and feel of a higher end Tag over a Grand Seiko, but to each their own

It's pretty much the same case as it is now with the Pelagos now, made by Rolex but with an eta movement. Rolex movement is also COSC certified while the Tudor sub isn't.

Now that Tudor is more known to buyers, the Tudor subs are up in price in comparison to a few years before where those 80s/90s Tudor Subs were a much cheaper alternative to the Rolex Sub.

The modern Tudors from what I read are good for the price. Nice retro stylings at a more affordable price compared to Rolex. Only down side, for me, is the modern/bigger sizing of their retro styled watches like the Black Bay @ 41mm. Other thing to consider is their use of eta movements and 316 SS casing compared to Rolex.

On the Grand Seiko topic, I am appreciate the technology and fit and fishing of their pieces but I am not a fan of their designs. For the same price, i would much rather get something from one of the popular Swiss brands albeit being a more inferior piece in terms of specs.

On the Tag issue, I already know about their seiko movements debacle. Despite this I still want a Tag Heuer Monaco Calibre 12 McQueen. Definitely overpriced but I buy watches for me and not as an investment.

Considering the discounts to be had on Tags, it's hard to consider them overpriced.

The AD near me has a giant sign that says 40% off Tags.

Is there any discussion of more affordable pieces? I can't afford a Rolex. I like watches but I can't afford to get too expensive. Trying to save that for a house

Always. Don't get intimidated by the high price pieces, man. I'm still rocking with my fossil and sturhling watch.

Waiting until I can get my hands on a Moto 360 in person to see if I'd really like it versus the Citizen Nighthawk that was posted earlier in the thread  just haven't had the time to find it on display.

You can always post your budget and the type of watch you are looking for and you'd almost always get a suggestion as long as it's not too vague like "can I get a watch suggestion between $100 to $8,000?"

Tis a beauty however rather have a mint vintage pepsi now a days...

Personally the Tudor Black Bay/Heritage Chrono (have one of each) and for the money I don't think anything can beat it. Superb finishing, very accurate (lets not forget ETA is a workhorse) and still housed in some of very pricey vintage/modern pieces (think Panerai)

Its a great watch !!

Been saving for awhile, finally bought it.

Look for an Omega speedy/sea master? What is your budget

I'm not in the market for any higher end watches right now, but I still enjoy looking at them

As for myself, I'm currently looking at a Seiko 009 and a Hamilton Field Khaki as my next purchases. I have the classic/cheap Timex Weekender, as well as a Citizen Eco-Drive with a rubber band. I just switched it out for a green/olive NATO strap as well as a black NATO and I love it.

Seiko, Citizen, Orient, etc. are the ones I'll see recommended a lot. Check the first post for more recommendations as well as posting your budget and preferences and I'm sure you can get some ideas.

Maybe you can read the first and second post to get an idea on what you are interested in and looking for in a watch. And maybe when you are done, you can fill in the recommendation quote located on the first post. Might be a better idea than looking for another thread with no information and outdated recommendations.
