Am I sleeping on 9th Wonder, or is he as overrated as I think he is?

I've had this convo with friends a number of times over the last few years and we always come to the same conclusion. 9th Wonder is very overrated. His name garners more attention than his beats are worthy of. What would be considered his best beats? Someone show me the light.

Depending on how talented people say he is, maybe. He's a dope producer nonetheless. This album is underground perfection.

"To answer all these rumors that been shooting through your group, yes 9th does really make these beats on fruity loops."

His beats are smooth and soulful, I like what he does.
They are smooth. They are soulfoul. They are also unremarkable. He has a good ear for samples but the actual construction of unique and provocative beats is not good.

The Dream Merchant 2 is also dope as F. Has 9th ever dropped anything that's weak? He's kind of like KRIT in the sense that he's very very consistent. He's no Pete Rock, Dilla, Madlib, Premo, Rza, Alc, but not many people are.

This is actually the point I'm mainly getting at. And truth be told I don't think he's as good as KRIT either. KRIT shows way more versatility and crafts his beats with way more depth. If you took away the soul sample you could still listen and enjoy a lot of KRIT's beats. That's not at all the case with 9th.

I can't say 9th is overrated, but I can see why some people are just like "meh" when it comes to his production.  He has a very distinct sound and rarely strays from it.  But that sound is etched in hip-hop history (in a positive way), so I personally can't call him overrated.  Not everyone is going to have the range of a Dilla or K.R.I.T., but that doesn't mean what they do isn't good.

I liked Murs 3:16 and The Listening a lot

But what do people think of 9th? I never really heard anyone say he was one of the best.

Can't really say he's overrated

9th's best stuff will always be his work with Little Brother, it's a shame they ended the way they did. I wouldn't say he's overreacted though

I'd take Krits production over 9ths any day.

I dunno man. I feel like b/c he's one of the few that really still sticks to soul he's held in a certain regard that he is not deserving of. He's shown no growth since he came on the scene. I saw a pic of him and Nas on twitter and said "do not want" and he rt'ed it. Dudes got in their feelings so I figured I'd try to gain a better understanding of what people see in him. IMO a Nas/9th album is a recipe for disaster.

Maybe not very versatile but he's got a really good body of work. I don't really see anyone put him top 5 ever so definitely not overrated.

I've been following his career since he still had a soundclick page with "Dollar Circulate" on it and he hasn't progressed at all.

He's lazy and apparently cannot grasp the concept of quality control.

He still uses those same drums too...ten years later.

I've thought that he was corny ever since he said that one should never sample the very beginning of a song, so I may be biased.

A bit unrelated, but I also never liked how Little Brother did their little sneak diss to Ghostface on The Listening.

I have a friend who is a producer and his sentiments echo yours very closely. In particular, the lack of progression.
