Am I sleeping on 9th Wonder, or is he as overrated as I think he is?

Haven't heard a 9th wonder beat I liked since probably 2007

He's heatmakerz status to me. He was good for his short era, but he never progressed and eventually even got worse IMO.

Sleeping? You dirt napped on 9th.
Yeah, now that I think about it, this thread is funny.  We're in 2014.  Dude had major buzz literally TEN years ago.  That's why I say he isn't overrated because I haven't heard people talk about 9th Wonder in ages.  Dude rarely, if ever, comes up when people list their top producers.

He did his thing during a time when soul samples were all the rage and that's what he's known for.  And he did it better than most.  I just can't see how he's overrated NOW.

9thWonder has not fallen off. He's beats are still hot.

His tape with Rapsody was dope last year and the year before that the Wonder Years was one of the best Mixtapes of 2012.

Please reconsider listening before voicing your opinion.

I never said anything about 9th falling off. I didn't think he was all that to begin with. Didn't like his remix albums. His work with Little Brother was solid but I was more into the rhymes than the production. Threats was cool, not a great beat. I've heard a good amount of his stuff since and nothing has ever truly impressed me. I dunno man, maybe it's the fruity loops lol

The Dream Merchant 2 is also dope as F. Has 9th ever dropped anything that's weak? He's kind of like KRIT in the sense that he's very very consistent. He's no Pete Rock, Dilla, Madlib, Premo, Rza, Alc, but not many people are.
This is actually the point I'm mainly getting at. And truth be told I don't think he's as good as KRIT either. KRIT shows way more versatility and crafts his beats with way more depth. If you took away the soul sample you could still listen and enjoy a lot of KRIT's beats. That's not at all the case with 9th.
Bugging comparing Krit to 9th,

Krit has already surpassed 9th.

I'm not comparing KRIT to 9th. I'm suggesting that they are very similar in the sense that you know what to expect with each, because they're both very consistent and stay in their lanes. Maybe I should have spelled that out for you hooked on phonics dudes.... "He's kind of like KRIT in the sense that he's very very consistent."

But you are comparing them.

I listened to some of his older and newer stuff today and to my ears he's actually gotten worse.

He had a dope run in the 00's but he was never elite or one of the best in the game and I never heard anybody claim he was.

I would take College Graduate Kanye or anything Hi-Tek over 9th wonder although I did like him on The Minstral Show.

Don't get this 9th criticism considering he was never in the mainstream like that....seems like he's getting hate because he keeps himself relevant

Maybe I'm biased cause we're from the same city. Idk but seeing the moves he made at musical and educational level is :pimp:

No hate I personally always liked hi-tek more when it comes to the soulful beats

He's not exempt from criticism just because he's an underground dude.
Your hate for dude is SERIOUS.

What are your thoughts on Ant, Jake One and Blockhead?

Why does it matter?

I'm just a hater.
You confirmed it. Cause I'd say they're similar. None of them are top tier (maybe Ant...), but they've all crafted great great albums. Don't need to me mind blowing to craft classic music.

He's a personal favorite... Him and Little Brother kinda bookended backpack rap and I can see how if you never liked that genre of rap how you might think he's overrated

This two tracks still resonate with me
