Am I sleeping on 9th Wonder, or is he as overrated as I think he is?

I'm a hater because I have legitimate criticism on an artist

Okay bud...whatever you say.

You sounding butthurt

Let dude cook...you act like he's being donned as some god producer  ...he found his lane so focus on finding yours :smokin

I'm not going to keep my opinions quiet just because some fans don't like to see anything negative said about their guy.

Sorry.

his older work (old as in "the listening" , "murs 3:16 9th edition" and everything before these) was classic and timeless

after that he slowly declined

now i dont even get excited when i see his name in the credits

He's lazy and apparently cannot grasp the concept of quality control.
don't know how legitimate of a criticism this is
I've thought that he was corny ever since he said that one should never sample the very beginning of a song, so I may be biased.
ah ok

9th Wonder is super smooth. When I was in college I would listen to his  instrumentals and Little Brother while studying.  One of my favorite beats from him is actually Destiny Child - "GIRL". That beat was mad smooth..

I Wish 9th Wonder would work with Phonte on a full album. Nicolay is doing a good job. Nicolay is a guy that is supremely underrated.

the black album rejects are the ish also the stuff he did with sean price and buckshot are ill.

wtf is so special about big krit?

if anything hes OVERRATED..

dude puts me to sleep and i've downloaded every mixtape since everyone says they are "classics" and every single one..

:smh: krit overrated? Your crazy as hell
I can't defend Krit at all. I was getting all of his mixtapes and albums but I heard no progress at all. It began to bore me like crazy. Unfortunately he's the type that when the day come when I need space in his music library I'll be deleting his whackiest songs and if I need even more space after on I might have to delete all his material.

He's cool but I never really listened to him enough to give a solid opinion on him. I know some people that say he uses the same drums on majority of his stuff though, that's about it.

Sleeping? You dirt napped on 9th.

Yeah, now that I think about it, this thread is funny.  We're in 2014.  Dude had major buzz literally TEN years ago.  That's why I say he isn't overrated because I haven't heard people talk about 9th Wonder in ages.  Dude rarely, if ever, comes up when people list their top producers.

He did his thing during a time when soul samples were all the rage and that's what he's known for.  And he did it better than most.  I just can't see how he's overrated NOW.
Yeah I don't get it either.

You would've thought 9th was out here hyping himself up crazy or produced a whole album for a hot rapper or something.

Bottom line you can listen to the 1st two Little Brother album, the Dream Merchant mixtapes, Wonder Years, and a few other loose tracks for Jay and other rappers on their albums and mixtapes to decide if he's overrated or not especially given dude's current reputation.

Third verse on The Listening.

They use a blatant imitation of Ghost's style as an example of what's wrong with rap.

This a monumental reach. You really think that's what that verse was about!? You missed the whole theme bruh, the album, hell the name of the group. The "imitations" and all that **** were tributes more than anything, please re-listen and reevaluate it. If you can put your bias and criticism aside. You're entitled to that, but I just feel you're a tad off base.

Re: 9thIt's tough because he's 1/3'rd of one of my favorite group. And a very influential group when it comes to my music taste and my life in general. But, I think he is a tad overrated, his beats never really moved me as much as the the rappers over his beats. I'm heavy into samples, so I've always enjoyed that aspect of his production. Technically (drum patterns, arrangement, etc) there are more precise producers, but his rep has carried him more than the product itself

I kinda feel you but Nicolay is so smooth. I think the combination of both Nicolay and 9th for Phonte would be a GOT piece.

Either wayeps for raising the point!

Why is 9th working with phonte and not big pooh....better yet what happen to Little Brother and HOJ? ....The listening and connected remind me of home 919 early 2000s im

I respect 9th Wonder cause dude said "eff ya'll I'm gonna use Fruity Loops" and he really stuck with it

That said, I wouldn't put him in my upper echelon of producers. With me being someone who makes beats as a hobby.. Dilla, Premo, Pete Rock, Just Blaze etc all have those instrumentals where you're like :wow: Damn how did he do that one?

I never got that 'genius' feeling from 9th wonder. A lot of his beats just sound like the Heatmakerz who produced Dipset stuff in the early 2000s, basically your typical sped-up, chopped up soul samples over the same drums.. that sound became played out

However he has a huge output as a producer, and there's definitely dope beats in his catalog. I can nod my head to anything that has a smooth sample and tight drums, doesn't matter how complex it is

 "tight drums"

that's the problem, 9th's drums are so weak. compare Black Milk's drums to 9th's, its really child's play. besides 9th samples i dont think he is all that great.
9th Wonder>>Big Krit(dude beats are

9th has also wasted a lot of work on so so artist.

He needs more Skyzoo and less Buckshot

And after the second Murs project I lost interest

I always thought Khrysis was just as good.

From Krit Wuz Here to the recent Week of Krit I hear the complexity of his lyrics and especially his instrumentals progress. The drum patterns, bass lines and samples get more and more interesting to me. I may be biased because I'm a big fan of his, but I'm not seeing the lack of progress.
