March 30 (UPI) -- A 4.8-magnitude earthquake shook Yellowstone National Park in Montana on Sunday morning, though there were no reports of significant damage.
The quake took place at about 6:34 a.m. local time with an epicenter about 23 miles east northeast of West Yellowstone, Mont., and a depth of 4.2 miles.

Peter Cervelli, a spokesman for the U.S. Geological Survey's Yellowstone Volcano Observatory, said the earthquake's epicenter was near the Norris Geyser Basin. He said any damage from the tremblor would likely be minor, and there were few visitors at the park at the time.

Smaller quakes were recorded in the region later in the morning in the 3-magnitude range.

The earthquake was the largest at the national park since Feb. 22, 1980.

what's with all of these Quakes recently? :nerd:

If this thing were to ever erupt it would put the earth into a suffocating "ice age" if I'm correct? Basically the equivalent to an asteroid colliding with Earth. I suppose I would be one of the "lucky ones" who would die quickly from the super hot air that rushes out of it.

Saw this thread and got kinda scared :x

If it wakes up Yellowstone das it. Ice age.

Yes it would and most people on the west coast lie in the immediate kill zone.

Chances of survival on the west coast is almost nil. Midwest and the east coast would need to flee their homes and haul *** to the other side of the planet immediately.

Regardless where you go whether you escape the initial destruction or not.... Humanity would take a tremendous L. No need for the illuminati, the amount of people claimed by the eruption and the aftermath is slashing a large percentage of the world population off.

Edit: before I spread fear in terms of geological time the Yellowstone super volcano is bound to explode soon. Geological time =/= human time. Fortunately well probably be dead (hopefully) long before it blows. It's overdue.

So Yellowstone park has the potential to kill all of us?

How?

I had no idea b..
Massive supervolcano underneath it all. Barring any special events that would prematurely trigger it, you and I will most likely be dead before it ever erupts. Just like Jay Patt said in his edit.

It would cause a volcanic winter because all the ash will block sunlight and the earth temp would go down a couple degrees celsius

Without sun our crops will die

But a good thing about ash is when it falls back to the ground the soil will be very fertile

Will block out the sun sending us into a ice age. The initial explosion is going to launch all types of gases and s_ into the atmosphere and eventually cover the globe.

The gas itself released from the explosion is exceptionally toxic and will claim the lives not claimed by the initial explosion itself and the pyroclastic flow.

Plenty of more stuff, but my geo class was last semester and I forgot most of it. Spent 3 weeks talking about Yellowstone itself

Yup.

Supervolcanoes are capable of eruptions thousands of times larger than normal outpourings.

It was thought that an external trigger, such as an earthquake, was needed to bring about a giant blast.

But tests at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in Grenoble show the sheer volume of liquid magma is enough to cause a catastrophic super-eruption.

When a supervolcano erupted 600,000 years ago in Wyoming, in what today is Yellowstone National Park, it ejected more than 1,000 cubic km of ash and lava into the atmosphere - enough to bury a large city to a depth of a few kilometres.
