General release or limited

Hello everyone,

I'm curious about the concept of general releases and limited releases. 

What is the definition of general release shoes and the definition of limited release? 

Also what determines the amount of shoes produced? Is it the same quantity produced for every shoe? 

For example, the Kobe 9's, is the same amount of shoes produced for every colorway?
