Wrestling Thread April 14-May 4 | 5/3 WWE Extreme Rules PPV Prediction Contest Now Open!

Gotdamn. I hadn't checked the thread since I made the Ziggler comment. Saw all the pages it jumped and thought I might have set off a firestorm.

Nope, just some good ol' wrasslin' talk.

ESPN to make a big play for Renee Young.
NO
Yeah man it's only a matter of time.

I accepted that a while ago. After her first few weeks on the job, there was no doubt in my mind she was destined for greater things.

Matter of fact...WWE got lucky she didn't land one of those other gigs first.

Easily the best female interviewer/personality/etc in wrestling that I could remember.

any good topics of discussion tonight? always good to share and especially learn some knowledge about the history of wrestling

-Gary Cantrell of More Like Radio recently interviewed former WWE creative team member Alex Greenfield, and below are some interview highlights. You can check out the entire interview at Morelikeradio.org.

On earning Undertaker's respect:

"Undertaker, even more so than Vince (McMahon) was tougher to get to know. He is a man who is absolutely protective of that character. I remember when I got promoted to head writer, I was sitting at home making a list of "**** Alex Needs to do to make this work" and near the top of that list was I need to call the Undertaker and say I'm here to earn your respect. Because you operate with different talent in different ways and there was no shortcut with the Undertaker. You know that Eddie and JBL liked me wasn't going to wasn't going to get me over with him cause he was a guy who's respect you earned."

On Undertaker making the call to end The Streak:

"There is no pressure that is put on the Undertaker to drop the streak. This was the Undertaker's decision, I have no doubt about that in my mind about that whatsoever. Nobody, including Vince (McMahon) is going to go to the Undertaker and say anything other than do you want to end the streak? There's never going to be a (Alex impersonate's Vince here) "Goddamn pal, Undertaker, it's over, pal. You're dropping the streak tonight." That would never happen in a million years. He is and I think it's safe to say the most respected guy in the locker room. I suspect he went to Vince and said this is the year and Brock is the guy. Thinking about it from Taker's perspective as such of a fight fan as he is, if you're going to go down, going down to the guy who walked away from wrestling and became the UFC heavyweight champion would appeal to his ego."

On how well Undertaker was in tune with his own character:

"He had very definitive ideas of what Undertaker would do and what Undertaker wouldn't do and made those things clear. And here's the thing, he was absolutely right. It was never about getting the character over in the traditional sense, it was an absolutely right impression of the best ways to tell stories with this character. Even when the character would lose. Even when Khali was beating the **** out of him, Khali, Undertaker and the team working working on that..We all listened to Taker because Taker even knew how to make the Undertaker lose the best possible way. He was never the guy who would say, 'oh, well, you know, I gotta win.' It's the classic thing of when a wrestler pitches creative it's usually give me the title I want to win. That wasn't the Undertaker's deal at all. He is a man who very much understands the utility of losing at the right time."
It's almost unheard of in this business to last that long and have the type of unwavering respect that Undertaker does. Somewhere along the way you piss someone off or make a few enemies, but to my knowledge, there are no such horror stories with Taker. In fact, it's the complete opposite and everyone tells us in their own way how much of a G he is.

The universal respect is probably his greatest accomplishment.

And what the writer said about the streak and his character is absolutely on the money. That's why I was

yea no ones touching heenan. million dollar man though when he used to buy people and they would sell out, classic.

i wish managers were the same today.hopefully heyman and zeb can do alittle more stuff like that.

cornett and jimmy hart were cool in there day

Jimmy Hart is one of the craziest characters ever, something you would only see in the world of wrestling.

Bill Alfonso is also another good one.

Would love to see a modern day Heenan Family.

Paul bearer might of
been the greatest manager ever simply because without him who knows if
the undertaker gets over and stays around as
long as he did. Heenan and heyman are always atop everyone's lists, but the impact bearer had on the undertaker is beyond words.

managers are a dying breed in today's wrestling. managers were always given to heels to draw heat. and we don't have heels
I'm today's wrestling.

100% agree with that.he held the undertaker down for a minute through a whole bunch of feuds. plus the urn was flawless.

I like that managers are slowly making a comeback though.

We got Heyman, Zeb, and now Lana. Shame that Abe Washingston got future endeavored, he was another potentially good one. Hell, WWE should let Teddy Long manage somebody...take Ricardo off the spanish announce team and make him a manager again while they're at it.

I like the whole heyman guy thing. but I don't think cesaro needed that label to get over. hell he was already over.

Dude was getting super over as a face man. Don't really understand the Heyman pairing but I'm sure they'll make it work.
