Any good methods for customs that wear away to reveal another color?

So I want to do my own sort of Statue of Liberty dunk/ Nike sb x Aj1 were one color will wear away to reveal the next.  I get how to do the bottom layer (Paint as I usually would a custom).  But my question comes in for the second color or top layer.  How do I get that to wear away to reveal my base layer?  I have two thoughts, one use spray paint for the top layer.  The second is to put a waterproof layer on the base coat then use angelus paint for the second layer and hope the waterproof layer will cause the paint to wear/chip away.  Has anyone had any success doing a custom like this?  Any thoughts on how I should do it?
