The NY Times Profiles Sneaker Reselling and Somebody Who Turned Down $98,000 for Signed Yeezy 2s

The NY Times recently published a piece documenting the growing rise of young footwear traders. In the era of hyper-inflated resale prices for sneakers, kids barely in their teens can be found at events trading and selling thousands of dollars worth of shoes. The article includes insights from older collectors who draw parallels between the boom in footwear trading and that of baseball cards in the ’90s. The piece also tells the story of one Jonathan Rodriguez, 18, from Deer Park, New York, who turned down $98,000 USD for a pair of Nike Air Yeezy 2 “Red Octobers” that he managed to get signed at one Kanye West’s recent concerts. See the whole article at the NY Times with selected quotes below.

“Reselling basketball sneakers has become a cultlike atmosphere,” said Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst of the NPD Group. “No one is watching over all this money changing hands. So it seems like it’s being done underground, but it’s perfectly legal. And it’s exciting to them because it’s a real form of income.”

“I know I could buy a house with this kind of money,” said the vendor, Jonathan Rodriguez, 18, of Deer Park, N.Y., who said he planned to enlist in the Air Force. “But I’m a huge Kanye West fan. I can just work to get the money. The only way I’m selling them is if there is a reason that I need to sell or I’m offered life-changing money.”

In an era of sneakers where fools are out here screwing each other over for a couple hundred or thousand dollars, THIS fool turned down the ultimate come up?

:smh:

Son is looking for "life changing money" or aka in his mind as "I'm trying to get rich, b."

He really thinks selling those shoes should bring him a life of fortune and never working again. Either that or he's never letting them go.

i could see kanye buying them from him in the future when kanye is irrelevant trying to reminisce

Idk why soo many of yall be hating on the next mans hustle. Kills me.

Turning down almost 100 grand for a pair of sneakers? That doesn't sound like hustling to me. Sounds backwards.

Realistically, son ain't getting an offer like that ever again.

Im willing to bet in 15-20 years a pair of red october yeezy SIGNED by the god himself will fetch a higher price than 100k. And thats a guarantee! So he actually made a smart business move and I see why he turned down that offer. But if it was me you can bet yah nuts that them things would of been gone in a heart beat for a hunnit racks

So you're telling me that these will be worth more than a pair of actual flu game signed by MJ?

Maybe I'm truly old for this but in what world will Kanye be bigger than MJ?

^^How much did the flu games sell for?
"The shoes Michael Jordan wore in his famous "Flu Game" sold for $104,765 early Thursday morning, shattering the record price paid for a pair of game-worn shoes in any sport.

Despite battling flu-like symptoms that nearly forced him to miss the game, Michael Jordan scored 38 points to rally Chicago past Utah in Game 5 of the 1997 NBA Finals.

The shoes, brought to the market by Grey Flannel Auctions and consigned by former Utah Jazz ballboy Preston Truman, were worn by Jordan during Game 5 of the 1997 NBA Finals in which Jordan scored 38 points for the Chicago Bulls despite laboring up and down the court from feeling sick that day.

The identity of the winning bidder was not immediately made public, but the amount paid blew away the previous record paid for a pair of game-used shoes, which were also worn by Jordan. A collector paid $31,070 just last month for a pair of that Jordan wore in his rookie season.

Truman was able to secure the shoes, after developing a relationship with Jordan, which started when he says he one day fetched Jordan's traditional pregame applesauce during the 1996-97 season."

this

Will be worth a lot more in five to ten years

Besides if he really likes em and isnt starving for the money, whats wrong with holding out for crazy money? He aint hurting

Just because some idiot Kanye stan offered 98k doesn't mean that dude will be able to get more than that.

98k off the top for a shoe that just released (even with a signature) is a rare type of offer, and one that I have a hard time believing will come again. Sneakers now are indeed like baseball cards were....when the market bottoms out, dude is gonna be kicking himself for not offloading them when the Red October frenzy was at its peak.
