Can someone explain how Schoolboy Q approach?

I don't like mustards production so I can never be a big YG fan. The album shocked me though. He talked about some real ish on there so I mess with it. "Do It To Ya" is some real thug passion steez. "Really Be" is amazing though.

With that said Oxy is clearly a better album to me and I'm glad Q didn't go the concept album route.

YG album wasn't better than Q's though, yes it had more of a traditional west coast vibe but that doesn't make it "better".

Both albums were good. I would probably rate them both 4/5. I think they both have two different sounds. Production wise and lyrically.

I agree with both of these. The two aren't all that comparable, but nice in their own ways.
Like dude up there said, it was cool how YG basically laid out a story, but I also liked how Q kept it pretty thorough with the rapping.

Srs question.

Why do y'all think Q's album is good? outside of being Kendrick's mans

I thought it was pretty bad, and I throughly enjoyed GKMC, but I couldn't get into no type of vibe listenting to Q's ****.

I pretty much wrote this same post when I saw the question a few hours ago and just erased and left the thread

Like, if you listened to it and weren't feeling it, how would any of our answers make a difference?

Oxy was VERY solid IMO. I just can't even get to listening to anything YG just off of "toot it & boot it". Yeah I know supposedly that is not his true style...I just can't. I cringe just saying that song title...so damn corny.
ya trippin toot it and boot it is my ****

Had high expectations for Q album. Was left a little disappointed. Its decent at best. Literally had never heard a YG song except for Toot It & Boot It...listened to MKL after seeing it EVERYWHERE (there were NBA, NFL, MLB, all types of ****** promoting it on social media). Production was solid. Son is OD average tho.

Schoolboy Q cool but his album was just alright. It felt like it was missing something but idk what. I do know that I like Habits & Contradictions more tho. As for YG I aint even bother listening to his album off the past songs I heard from him. Hes generic af. TBH I like Vince Staples more than both of them

Had no idea yg my that toot it and boot it song lol

His album dope tho..,haven't peep Q album yet

Oxymoron is good but I wish it was more of a concept album..
This is how I feel..

When you listen to his interviews and heard the concept of "Oxymoron" and the different meanings you kind of expect a more conceptual album + the fact that he was the next one up in TDE after Kendrick you kind of wanted more. It was still cool tho.

YG on the other hand

...NEVER thought I would be bumping a YG album or a YG song for that matter in the near future last year, but this dude exceeded my expectations that I didn't even have. And I only checked the album out because the drake song was cool and the Kendrick feature.

A lot of dudes putting albums out and just throwing songs they think will pop or be effective out. (Ex. Ross album Mastermind). Had some dope songs but no clear direction at all.

This is where YG and Mustard flourished. They actually told a story that sounded amazing sonically and lyrically. Lyrically YG ain't Talib but he ain't supposed to be. You hear the youth of him just wanting to party, the ignorance in the mistakes he makes during the story and in the end even a little reflection of consciously knowing "he wasn't ****" for things he did.

The direction was pretty clear on MKL and at the end you felt like you lived a day in the life of YG and know him and his story.

don't know what yall talking about...

Schoolboys Q album is :smokin

but I'm from south central so I'm probably biased.

As far as YG...

haven't listened to his album, probably never will.

I've heard a few songs on the radio and what not. Not feeling it.

Q's album was trash..maybe 3-4 songs i liked on there..YG's album was surprisingly good only 1-2 songs on there i dont like

Repped. Exactly how I feel about MKL. Listen to it daily. I rock with Q's album heavy too, but I was definitely initially lukewarm on it. Comparing it to MKL, I feel MKL is more 'genuine' throughout song-for-song. While I of course haven't walked a second in either of these guys shoes, but Hell of a Night is clearly a song meant to cross over into mainstream (still think it's cool). MKL is easier to digest from top to bottom. I can tolerate Los Awesome, but I don't love it. I understand it's supposedly for the gangbangers, but that's a poor excuse. I was practically raised on west coast gangsta rap, and I've heard much better. I like both albums, bought both albums, but I definitely find myself bumping MKL more.

I DESPISE when people always bring up Kendrick when discussing Q.

Kendrick may be the better artist but don't get it twisted, Q can hold his own. Dude is hands down one of the most entertaining artist in the game right now and he put out a great album this year; definitely one of the years best so far. Not to mention how sick his debut is.

This post makes me realize that when you have no expectations for things, music specifically, your ears may be more open to what the music is meant to be rather than what you want it to be. This could also be a double edged sword but ya know, still...

I mess with Qs album a lot though, specially Hid & Her Fiend and the Prescription. I really wished both of those songs were longer, really liked them a lot.
