engagement /marriage thread.

Interesting.....did not know this thread existed.

I guess I might as well ask here cause I have no clue how to do this. How did you guys go about buying a ring for your girl/fiance? I have no idea where to look or whether online is something that is considered or just going to retail shops. Anyone want to shine some light on the best way to do this? And what is the average price on rings that looks suitable? And do most of you guy pay cash or is getting a credit card an option?

I bought the ring in Dubai when I was on my last deployment. Same ring in the states would have hit me for 15K....

Thanks everyone for the help and insight. Will take everything into consideration and will come back with other questions I am sure.

Btw, whats customary when it comes to groomsmen gifts?
Anything really. Personalized flasks, lighters, cuff links, etc. You don't have to go over the top with it if you don't want to. Plenty of ideas on the google.

so i don't think marriage is in the near future( next 1-2 years)

been with my girl almost 4 years freshmen year college to post grad and were both full time workers.

she's looking to apply to med school in 2016, so that means she'll be around 32 all said in done. so should i propose before all that- were turn 23 next year so i was thinking until at least 25 or so.

does anyone have a SO that's going through med school? and i saw the post about cohabitating a place- is that really necessary?

thank's yall

Lots of my classmates in med school were married and a few even had kids during med school.

It's tough but it's doable. Just know her hours are going to be crazy at times and there are going to be days where everything you do is wrong

All the marriages in my class survived med school. A few serious relationships didn't but they were all LDRs

When is too young to propose, or for that the right age to propose.

Just a random question.

No age. Just when you're ready

I have friends who got married when they were in the early 20s and still going strong 10 years later

My brother just got married last month and he's 37

Right on. Thanks for that info. I wonder if you can get diamond separate on a ring below. I feel like this is the trendy ring and see most girls getting that.

So I am assuming something in the $10K range is good right? I know some folks that got their girls $2K rings, which is fine and I am not even that dude but my girl works and knows other girls that are getting phat ol' rings. One of her friends even got a $40K ring if you can believe that. I ain't even got that type of bread.

Don't go into debt over an engagement ring. If your girl has her heart set on something, she can help pay it too.

My wife's ring was $2850. My sister gave me $1000 a month and a half earlier for an abortion, but we ended up not going through and spending that money on the ring.

6 years later, we have 2 beautiful daughters, decent home, careers, etc.

I got all my guys personalized morphers with their names (for fun), cohiba's, custom cuffs (some got sports teams, some got comic related ones), and a bottle of Henny White. Honestly, a simple flask and a cigar would've probably sufficed, but I knew I went a bit overboard but whatever

So you swindled your sister out of $1000? That's grimy.

I don't want to go into debt but it seems like the logical thing since I can't save money for the life of me. To save even $10K in a year would be really hard and the sad thing is I could totally do it but I'd have to cut back really hard on spending, which is impossible for in SF. She's not materialistic though but her friends are and those are the ones that sort of put a strange light with rings.

What is the rule about rings again? Has to be worth 6 months rent? 10% of your salary? Something like that

i sold a bunch of shoes to buy the engagement ring. paid cash for everything related to our wedding from rings to flights/hotel to reception and everything in-between. zero debt. shoe collection is now just a shadow of its' former self

There's something (actually everything) about these over the top, elaborate proposals that I just hate. Seriously, I see nothing romantic about this (and neither should any sensible adult). It's just ridiculous. Obviously, it's none of my business, but I felt like I had to express my true hatred for these.
