The Internet is Saved - The FCC has ruled in favor of Net Neutrality

so net neutrality is a good thing? i dont understand any of this stuff but as long as the internet stays the way it is awesome. greatest resource in the history of humanity.

It works like this.

ISPs are going to charge rates to websites based on a set of government standards. So big corporations will be able to pick winners and losers (bigger websites vs. smaller websites) by their ability to pay higher rates.
I thought Net Neutrality prevents ISPs from creating a 'fast lane/slow lane' based on funds.

This whole thing is pretty confusing. Mission accomplished, I suppose.

i think its obvious. we want free downloads, low cost, high speed net right?

i remember kazaa n morpheus, a ter patrick scene was like 59MB. these days, thry have mobile version at 200mb, and HD like 1GB. lol

The internet has evolved so much since by going into AOL Chatrooms and requesting music and taking an hour to download a 3mb song.

But that was because of the natural evolution of technology. With Net Neutrality, it will stifle that by letting corporations pick their friends to control content.

What in it sets the stage from that. All I've seen when looking is basically preventing ISPs from treating anyone differently online.

Actually this could be really good......or bad

I remember in different threads NT'ers would complain about cable. A few said they would okay with paying to watch a few channels the care about and that's it.
Mark is saying with this ruling, the market is headed that way. Just like the whole Google phone fiasco (and using fave fives to your advantage, that's why those plans aren't offered anymore), people will get hip use loopholes and or cancel their cable service and just use the net. But if AMC, ESPN, etc has a net equivalent of their TV channel and the net is under TITLE II, what is to stop them from censoring the net? SOPA and PIPA rear their ugly heads again.

He briefly mentioned the wardrobe malfunction the the controversy around it. What will be considered appropriate for anyone on the net to see or otherwise, because as a TITLE II (as I am understanding it) the FCC has a bit more authority over how we use the net in the USA. It just hasn't been put into practice yet/ the right controversy hasn't presented itself.

EDIT: Also services like Netflix could be seen as paid prioritization which throws a wrench in the mix.

Actually we want content to be treated equal, and not be forced to compete against major corporations to get content out to the masses.

Let me try to break this down to idiot talk..

So basically your internet bill will be like a gas bill(charged by usage), so the fancier the website the more it will cost to browse?

The costs are going to get transferred to the consumer though...

So internet prices are going to go up...

This isn't ALL good... Dudes like Netflix are able to skate by on crappy networks...

Meanwhile, the "buffering" will be blamed on the provider and not the servers

In the end we don't know how this will affect us the consumers. Telecoms however enjoy close to a 50% profit margin which shouldn't be allowed. They are price gouging us and we are forced to pay 2-10x what other developed countries pay for internet that is trash compared to them. We aren't necessarily 3rd world in terms of internet speed but we are way behind the curb. Compared to some Asian countries along with Western and Northern Europe we are still in the Dark Ages.

This is/was happening anyway. And it's totally on the ISP. One of the main reasons HBOGO doesn't work on roku smartTVs

what u mean by equal. got an example?

Look what happened with Netflix and Comcast, the average person with a media driven blog, or podcast doesn't have that type of money to give to an isp. So their content get throttled, having "fast lanes" on the web is terrible IMO.

Look at it like your internet connection (att, time warner)

And the packets being delivered are cars (Netflix, eBay)

The roads were trying have the ability to charge more for Netflix cars because there are SOOOO many Netflix cars...

So the Netflix cars are saying "we can't get through because the roads aren't wide enough... We need you all to invest capital in widening the roads"

People think that the cable companies were saying "we need to make a special lane for you guys and charge more"

That's not completely true...

The roads are saying "Netflix cars just too slow (they need better servers to support the amount of people)

The cars are saying " nahhhh... Our cars are fine... You all are just giving us crappy roads because you know we're taking away from your other roads (cable TV)"

That's the debate

Remember being one of the few dudes with internet on the block back in the day.

Them dial up days with AOL MSN Netscape

this is really about Netflix, bruh... which accounts for 25% of internet traffic during peak hours.

And hbogo isn't an ISP.. I dont get what your saying...

Why would an internet provider stop you from using their service?

They WANT you to use as much as you can so they can charge more

And I'm in favor of cellphone companies competing with the cable companies like time warner and Comcast to deliver internet data. LTE is faster than cable anyway This will lead to price cuts due to competition

I never called HBOGO an ISP, but it looks like Comcast stopped blocking it finally

What's ISPs really want to do is put caps, like cellphone companies

So basically, its cable companies trying to avoid the inevitable......being knocked out of the box by internet?
