OK... to try and change the subject a little (yeesh). They brought it up on the radio this morning and I have to agree with Tiki for once -- do y'all think the RB position is really under appreciated in today's NFL?

I mean, look no further than the Steelers. Their stud team MVP RB goes down and they were done. Teams are no longer drafting RBs in the first round because "value" in later rounds.

Seems like almost every team that has made it to, or won a Super Bowl over the last 10 years, have one guy who 'does it all' and contributes to 1000+ all-purpose yards and double digit touchdowns. Marshawn, Knowshon, Rice, Gore, etc. Last ten teams that made the Super Bowl had rushing totals of: 2188, 1873, 1901, 2491, 1427, 1764, 1606, 1924, 2106, 1294.

Five teams in the playoffs this year are outside the top 15 in rushing (had less than 1781 on the ground): New England, Pittsburgh (barely), Indianapolis, Detroit, and Arizona. Three of them are already sitting at home after this last weekend.

While it's def. a QB driven league, I think that RBs as a whole continue to be undervalued.

These are all the 1,000 rushers this year. 1, first round pick.

Murray 3rd round
Bell 2nd round
McCoy 2nd round
Lynch 1st round
Forsett 7th round
Foster undrafted
Lacy 2nd round
Hill 2nd round
Gore 3rd round
Miller 4th round
Morris 6th round
Forte 2nd round
Charles 3rd round

There is surely some "devaluing" of the position, but you can say that for almost any position on a team that uses 46 players on game day, across 22 positions, plus kickers, plus special teams specialists. You can take any small sample size of group of teams and see some sort of correlation in something.

The 4 home teams this weekend, NE, Sea, GB, Den. Brady, Russ, Rodgers, Peyton. All 4 QB's have won a SB.

The 4 road teams. Flacco with a SB. Cam and Luck both #1 overall draft picks, and Romo the leading passer on the year.

Hell, the guys that lost, Ben a SB winner, Stafford another #1 overall,..............and then Cincy and Arizona.

Can't wait to see what happens in Saturdays game.

I think the RB position is a position where you need just enough production to keep defenses on their toes. And for that reason it's a position that's easy to replace. I think the 2012 Vikings showed that's as far as you will get relying soley on your RB as your best player. Given that and the shelf life of a RB it's just not smart to throw a ton of money at a super star running back. It's much smarter to spend the money elsewhere, specifically defense if you already have pieces on offense. You can find a RB anyywhere. It's almost like I hope Lacy's ceiling isn't much higher. He's doing exactly what's needed, but if he were to start taking it to much higher levels it just wouldn't be smart to pay him big bucks over someone like Cobb or defense.

If you find a running back that becomes a stud, utilize him until he demands big money. Then plug in a new one for cheap and hope the same thing happens.

I said it's a QB driven league, so I dunno where this is coming from. Look at the team rushing stats for these guys when they won their rings, tho.

Half of the top 16 rushing teams made the playoffs this year. 50% of them. That kind of shows just how important running the football actually is. Regardless of draft position, having "that guy" in the backfield is damn near a necessity to making deep runs in the playoffs.

Dallas is the better team and they'll prove it again when they beat Green Bay, a team that the Lions just lost to. Then Lions fans can finally stop whining.

How are they a better team because they won*? I wasn't impressed by Romo, dancing around and around only to get sacked. D Murray looking more and more like a one year wonder. Dez disappeared against a weak Lions secondary. The Dallas 'no name' defense that allowed gimpy Reggie Bush run a TD against them?

I might actually root for the Pack this weekend. Can't wait to see the face of Jerry Jones, and Romo after they lose.

Pictures like this are priceless!

You know this middle school kid logic, right?

You know the Lions just lost 2 straight games and are where they should be, sitting at home watching the games, while Dallas has won 5 straight.

I don't think it's undervalued.. it's just the value of the position has to be weighed with the rest of the team..

if given the choice I'm easily going with a QB or LT over that spot.. then probably RT, C and WR.. would need a special TE for me to do it

but it's a pretty easy position to fill, with a very short shelf life.. look at new England and Denver pulling guys off the street

then you got trent Richardson, who was draft in the top 5 and indy traded a 1st for him

just look at the leading rushers this year, the top 3 guys were all selected outside of the first round.. and even though marshawn was selected in the 1st, he's on his 2nd team and was acquired for a 4th.. then you got Justin forsett 5th

No even trolling, serious questions here ..

But you guys haven't won a playoff game in how long?

Were you impressed with Stafford? Were you impressed with Calvin, the same guy who tourched us for 329 only had 85 this time around ... Dez disappeared but were you guys able to stop TWill, Beasley, and Witten?

I'll give you the Reggie Bush comment because I said the same thing when he scored, however you need to give more props to whoever made the block, I think it was Tate, that allowed Reggie to walk in the end zone :smh:

I wouldn't use the 2012 Vikings as an example -- it's not AP's fault that he was surrounded with garbage at the other positions.

Look at this years Indy team as a good example of the shoe being on the other foot: Luck has Daniel Herron and Zurlon Tipton at RB. His WRs are a rookie, a boom-or-bust guy that can't seem to catch the ball, and a 40 year old Reggie Wayne. No matter how good Mr. Luck is, do you honestly see him making the Super Bowl with that cast?

If they don't get him a solid o-line and/or weapons, they'll be a perennial one (or two) and done team. I'm not saying to start blowing first rounders on RBs left and right, but a guy like Gurley? I might actually make that move if I'm a middle round team looking to get over the hump.

That's all well and good.

I'm saying that if Dallas beats Green Bay that doesn't "prove" anything about Detroit.

So you would actually value the best center in the game over the best RB?

your first post in this thread was yesterday, how much football have you actually watched this year?

A good RB can still be tremendously valuable.  It's just that there are lots of ways to find good RBs.

I watched enough to know that Mark Sanchez isn't the answer in Philly and that Bradley Fletcher should be doing taxes or mopping floors.

And I've been watching football since when Ken O'Brien played for the Eagles, dropped back to pass and threw the ball backwards.

So the Rams it is I guess...St Louis fans are gonna be pissed to a certain extent.

This year no I don't think Luck has a chance. iLLoQuent made a good point too. With Luck and the Colts it's gotta be a priority to look at the O-Line before anything else. I'm not saying you don't need a running back, I'm just saying you don't need a star running back. If Gurley falls far enough where he easily has the most talent on the board, sure take him. But what I'm saying is don't make drafting him or signing a big time back a priority. Once he eventually becomes a big time stud it just won't be smart to pay him what he'll demand. Especially when you can find a RB who will do enough many other places. Bradshaw was doing enough. Colts are in an unbeleivable position because they already have Luck, obviously. When you have a Luck, Manning, Brady, Rodgers, Brees paired with an O-line, drafting and contracts becomes much easier. All who have won Super Bowls did so by just plugging players in on offense year after year. I'll use the Packers as an example because I'm more familiar. They won the Super Bowl when the O-line stepped up, a run game that did enough with a 6th round rookie Starks, and WR corp that's been pretty much completely replaced. Once Luck has an O-line, he will do whatever he wants regardless of what weapons he has. Which is why the Packers dont pay some of these guys they drafted once their contracts are up. Just draft another. It's why the Pats don't throw money around on Offense. I know people get frustrated with the Pats but when you have the QB it's how you sustain success. If you want a Super Bowl use that money on defense to have the QBs back. IIRC fans were more frustrated than usual with the Pats lack of offensive signings this past off-season. They are now the SB favorites.

I'm also not saying don't spend money on the Gronks, Graham's, and Cobbs or even drafting Gurley. There's certainly exceptions, but I think you should get what I mean. O-Line, O-Line, O-Line.
