NFL Discussion Thread: Pats win SB XLIX. Offseason begins

Performances are more what hooks me. The grit and exuberance of Brett Favre, the precision of Peyton, Brady's killer instinct, McNair's fortitude. Witnessing one or two of those type games from any of them helped me differentiate between levels of individual greatness. Usually, most these guys have that one thing that no one else can match. Some won Super Bowls, others didnt, but it's those respective qualities along with steady success is why I don't really care to list a top 5. Some days teams need a Brett Favre, others they need a Marino to whip it around all over. This thread picked apart a lot of greats, which furthers my view...Not one of them is perfect and in all likelihood, not all are interchangeable. It's those individual qualities that make them standout for me.

I'm in the 'mix and match' camp dmx. Rings play a part, but when:
You were never named a first team All-Pro QB
Don't have multiple MVPs
A 56% completion percentage
QB rating under 80
Never lead the NFL in completion percentage
Never lead the NFL in touchdowns
Never lead the NFL in quarterback rating
Led the NFL in passing ONCE by 7 yards
Got your back blown out in big games until a team formed to carry your broken, on the way to the glue factory horse looking ***

and have the worst stats I've ever seen in a Super Bowl winning QB... yeah.

You overrated.

Still an all-time great tho.

but i thought stats only tell part of the picture :nerd:

ah i see, this doesnt apply to you boy warner so lets just sweep that thought process under the rug.

imagine those stats if he had a decent team around him :nerd:

noneless, 3 superbowls with scrubs :smokin

speaking of which...where do people see jim kelly? what if he won one of those SBs? not in terms of him being one of the GOATs. just in general, where do you have him? top 20? top 30? etc

P.S. My first year playing quarterback I wore 7 because of Elway. I admired his toughness.

:smokin

I looked at Jim Kelly's numbers a few weeks ago. Not nearly as good as I thought they were. McNabb had better numbers in a few categories.

I got nothing but respect for Marino but I can't put someone with 0 chips in as the GOAT, I don't care about the excuses

I can't stand all the ring talk. People only use it when it benefits their argument. Eli has two rings but gets ZERO respect or credit, ******* two. Russell Wilson has one and I give him ZERO credit. Dilfer has one and I give him ZERO credit.

Marino is in my top 3. It's tough though, so many good QBs. It's hard to put them in order.

where does Johnny Manziel rank? this time last year he was gonna be the GOAT

top 5

very well put.

Some days you need a Shaun Alexander to run it in from 2 yards out.

I think that when the greatest thing you can achieve in sports, far better than any scoring lead or MVP award, is a championship, it doesn't make sense for people to downplay it.

Circumstances are what they are, but the greatest in every sport have won it all.

Primary 3 tech with 3 double digit sack seasons and was equally as good stopping the run. Unheard of at that time.

Sapp was a revolutionist!

John Randle was better. Sapp is more known because he was great on a great defense -- on a team that won a Super Bowl. Randle was phenomenal on a defense that ranged from OK to very good. 3 double digit sack seasons? That pales compared to Randle's 9 -- 8 of which were consecutive. Also finished with more tackles than Sapp. Obviously he's not completely overlooked, as he's in the HOF, but of that era, Sapp seems to get more praise and I don't think it's warranted. I understand it, but I don't agree with it.

I tried telling him man. He won't listen.

Get a clue dude, I know those years well. I showed you all those draft picks thru his prime. You say JB Brown is "good" because he played 5 years, Jonathan Martin just finished his 3rd year, 2 more and he's considered good too?

Take the L man and move on. It's no big deal. I know my franchise better than you do, it's ok.
