NFL Discussion Thread: Pats win SB XLIX. Offseason begins

Back to the defense, and part of what I said yesterday.....

We all saw on the broadcast how Seattle is the first Def since the 85-86 Bears to lead the league in fewest yards and points in back to back years.

On top of that, they beat Brees and Manning last year
And Rodgers-Brady (if they win) this year.

They become the greatest Defense that any of us know of from 1980 on. (I don't know enough about the Steel Curtain)

But in this modern pass happy era, what the Seattle Defense is doing is otherworldly. Not to mention Earl out there with a broken shoulder, and Sherman out there with one arm. Just absurd. :x

5 Turnovers by Seattle, and the MVP QB in his prime only mustered 5 FG's and 1 TD. Insane. :x

That defense is definitely something serious.

ETIII, Sherm, Kam, Avril, Bennett, Wagner, etc there's a playmaker at every position.

Kap has been a starter for 2.5 years.  Even if what you said was accurate, it has no relevance to anything that has been discussed today.  Thank you for playing.

Just pointing out that having a top flight defense doesn't guarantee anything. If only the Niners had Russ and not Alex/Kaep, maybe you'd be less salty.

Has Ron Jeremy learned to interview yet? You guys sign Lane yet?

Thanks for playing.

Why are you making this conversation about the 49ers?  Having a "top flight defense" is not the same thing as having a contender for greatest defense of all time, either.

Yet another example of a Seahawk fan discrediting his own defense in attempt to prop up his quarterback.  SMH.

I'm a 49er fan dummy. I just don't get the criticism for Russ when there are top defenses with big $ QBs that can't get the job done year in year out. It should be even more obvious to you as a 49er fan but then again, most 49er fans I interact with are homers and can't accept reality or logic.

Carry on.

Well then you are a very uninformed Niner fan.  As a Niner fan, you should have seen a lot of Seahawk games over the past couple of seasons.  You should know there is a huge difference between calling them a "top defense" and what could be the greatest defense of all time.

The best defense the 49ers have had was in 2011, and that is the closest they were to the Seahawks current D.  And even then, it really isnt all that close.

Russell Wilson has 1 more playoff game and less than half the INT's Luck has. 3 more TD's. 26 point higher rating. 5% higher completion %

But hey stats don't matter. It's all about the eye test

cue stupid teenage girl used kermit.gif

And speaking of the eye test, Wilson outdoes Luck in the eye test damn near every Sunday since their rookie year.

Folks on this board just love to hate Wilson but slurp on QB's who wouldn't last a drive behind Wilson's ****** pass-blocking offensive line, who couldn't make the plays Wilson makes in their wildest ******* dreams.

Folks don't have to prop up ****, seriously. This ******* narrative is getting old. Name me just one QB in NFL history who has accomplished the things Wilson has in his 3 year career.

-Most passing TDs by a rookie (tied with Peyton with 26).
-Most passing yards in a playoff game by a rookie (385 yards)
-First QB in NFL HISTORY to throw for 300+ yards and rush for 100+ yards in a single game.
-One of only three QBs in NFL history to throw for 50 touchdowns in their first two seasons.

Find me ONE QB, just ONE, that has done all that, and OH is on the verge of winning TWO Superbowl titles.

I'm waiting.....

Paging DLand or CP or any other disgruntled Luck/Kaep apologists.

I can picture him going to the Super Bowl anyway wearing a Luck jersey, telling everyone the Colts had a few bad bounces or they would be there

And you know what else ******* funny?

The haters argument against Wilson makes NO SENSE.

His defense props him up right? But he still has had to work behind one of the worst pass blocking units year in and year out since his rookie year AND play with an offense that is basically devoid of weapons aside from Marshawn Lynch.

Name me one QB that could do the things Wilson does behind such a putrid line? Hm? Maybe Aaron Rodgers? But probably not, he's pretty mobile but really does not have the speed, quickness and elusiveness Wilson has to extend plays.

So Wilson works around the deficiencies on the Seattle Offense right? Right?

Then why can't Andrew Luck or Peyton Manning, guys who are SUUUUUUUUCH great QBs work around the deficiencies of their teams? Hm? I mean take Luck's Colts for example, we all know that their defense is hot garbage, right? And their running games leave a lot to be desired right?

But his offensive line graded out as a top 10 pass blocking unit, he has a ton of weapons to throw to right? More so than most QBs in this league have. Why if he's so much better than Wilson can he not overcome the deficiencies his team has?

Why can't Peyton who has THE BEST pass blocking offensive line and arguably the best group of receivers in the NFL as well as a solid run game and a great defense not get it done? What's his ******* excuse? Huh? What's BEEN his excuse all these ******* years he's put up monster stats in season but just never gets it done in the postseason?

He's almost always had a top-5 offensive line, he's had HOF receivers, he's had solid defenses, solid RBs, whats his ******* excuse?

My point is this, yes, Russell Wilson enjoys the advantage of playing with quite possibly the greatest defense in NFL history, but his offense? His offense outside of Lynch is complete ****, his offensive line is GARBAGE. Great run blocking unit, yes, but absolutely dog **** at protecting their QB. He makes it work, why don't the other guys who are supposedly better make it ******* work?

Why? No team is going to be 100% perfect. Some QBs have to deal with a defense that can stop opposing offenses, other QBs have to deal with a non-existent run game, or a shortage of receivers, or a poor offensive line, or a ****** special teams unit that's always giving him poor field position, or a combination of these things. Some guys have really no glaring weaknesses on their teams, like Peyton.

But nobody ever wants to slight Peyton for being unable to extend plays, nobody ever talks about how come postseason, when defenses put QB's under a microscope and attack according to that QB's limitations he simply NEVER has an answer for the pass rush. Nobody ever wants to talk about how Peyton NEEDS a team to be built a certain way and has needed the same basic build dating back to his days as a Colt or else he can't function.

But yet Wilson gets slighted because his team's defense is good? He doesn't deserve any credit for working around the deficiencies his team does have?

There's a double standard here and you guys know it. It's ******* pathetic and the narrative is getting old, real ******* old.

In the playoffs,
Throws for 103 yards, beats Drew Brees.

Throws first TD up 29-0 vs Peyton Manning in the Super Bowl.

Throws 4 INT's, beats Aaron Rodgers.

Brees scores 15. Peyton 8. Aaron Rodgers, with 5 turnovers, scores 5 Field Goals.

Marshawn Lynch in those games?

140 Yards and 2 TD's vs Brees.

39 yards and a TD vs Peyton. (Defense added a TD, a Safety, and a Special Teams TD to add an additional 16 points to the Lynch TD tho before Russ started getting stats)

157 yards and a TD yesterday vs Rodgers.

But please, tell me more about that game he had against the Deadskins the first week of October, or the fact that he's been able to get TD's early in his career, during the easiest passing era in NFL history, please, tell me all about those.

Ok, so then Russ can win games like other QB's if he has no solid run game and an average Defense, just give him a great Oline and a solid WR and he'll deliver in the same manner, yes? :nerd:

Nobody slights Peyton?
