It is offensive, though. I think it's offensive to call Native Americans Indians, but I understand not many share that POV.

Seems like it wasn't offensive until someone or some group got a wild hair. No one had these complaints 20 years ago or when they we're winning Super Bowls.

who came up with the term originally?

and what was the context for the use of that term?

Its offensive point blank. no way around it.

Last time it was brought up in this thread the fans wouldn't even acknowledge it was racist. Just kept dancing around it with
"why is it an issue now?" "It's always been ********.".

They really want it pardoned due to grandfather clause.

Not surprised by Mike Ditka's comments.  I always viewed him as a SWS after his comments about President Obama a few years ago.  Ditka is just showing who he is, and most likely what he was taught to believe.

I spoke on this before around page 72 of this very thread, but to answer your question........

"So in conclusion just to let everyone know, the origin of the name "*******" was created and used by Native Americans but then Europeans and Americans later on began to use the name "*******" as a derogatory term against Native Americans.  That is where the mix up comes into play.  Meaning that the word has negative or disparaging connotations as used by some currently"

I was being facetious for those who didn't think it was wrong

def. a product of social media

Can y'all look this stuff up before you post this? Yes, it's been thrown into the limelight a little more now but these have been in the courts since the early 90's with the Washington team. It's been a big deal for a while now. Same thing goes for that dumb *** Indians nickname and those stupid turds in Atlanta doing a tomahawk chop when the Braves are trying to rally.

Is the point you're trying to make that because it was not talked about as much before (or you didn't know as much before) that makes it somehow okay now or that this culture is too PC?

what are you talking about? I think the name should be changed; my point was social media helps to keep driving this home, if it was 1992 it was only word of mouth and what newspapers and media published

pipe down and stop making assumptions

Even though it was called a *******, what are you going to call them, a Brownskin?

+1 @Proshares

To clarify here... What does "SWS" mean?
Suspected White Supremacist
Thought it was something like that.

I hate that term though... "White Supremacist" seems to be getting thrown around where it doesn't apply a lot lately.

I think there's a difference between being a 75 year old from Pittsburgh suburbs who's got some questionable opinions and a White Supremacist...
