The mystery reversal.
Midway through the third quarter, Dallas trailed 20-7. Romo drove Dallas 79 yards to the one, and DeMarco Murray got the 80th yard on fourth-and-goal; Detroit, 20-14. A Dan Bailey 51-yard field goal made it 20-17 five minutes later. On the next series for Detroit, the Lions had third-and-1 at the Dallas 46, and Matthew Stafford threw a pass up the left seam for tight end Brandon Pettigrew. Rookie linebacker Anthony Hitchens, with the ball in the air close to Pettigrew, never turned around and ran into Pettigrew as he reached to try to make the catch. Back judge Lee Dyer, with a clear sightline to the play, threw the flag for pass interference.

“Pass interference,’’ referee Peter Morelli said in the stadium. “Number 59, defense. Automatic first down.”

When the call was made, Dallas receiver Dez Bryant sprinted out on the field, helmetless, to protest to one of the officials. Players aren’t allowed to be on the field without helmets, so that should have been a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty. Then head linesman Jerry Bergman spoke up in a crew conference, saying—according to a pool report after the game—that he thought this was more face-guarding (a penalty in college but not in the NFL) than interference, even though Hitchens seemed to clearly restrict Pettigrew’s attempt to make the catch while Hitchens wasn’t playing the ball. On TV, Pereira said it was clearly interference. Seventeen seconds after making the original call and announcing a first down, Morelli said over the PA: “There is no foul on the play.”

First: What is Morelli’s hurry? Why didn’t he say to Dyer: “Tell me exactly what you saw.” If an official throws a flag at that moment of a game, he sees something, and the referee’s job, I believe, is to sort that out, and to hear all sides—no matter how long it takes. Two teams’ seasons are on the line here. How do you reverse a call like that one, and do it in breakneck time? What kind of official is Dyer if he can be so easily convinced that his call was wrong? What kind of conviction does that show?

And would this have happened if Morelli—who had zero of his regular crew on the field with him Sunday, in his biggest game of the season—had his men with him, and they’d worked together the entire year, and the head linesman’s strident opinion clearly could be more trusted? This play changed my mind about the mixed crews in the postseason. Namely, there shouldn’t be mixed crews. Crews work together all season to form a chemistry. And the biggest game of the year, officials who are working together for the first time (in most cases) have to make season-deciding calls like this one. It’s just not a smart way to do business in the biggest games.

Apparently, Dyer didn’t stick with his call, deferring to Bergman’s judgment. But I’ve seen crew conferences after flags were thrown, and the flag is picked up. I have never seen a flag thrown, a referee announcing the penalty and the first down, and then going back and saying, in effect, it’s a do-over. When it happened, Pereira, on FOX, said: “Wow.” Sort of how I felt. Instead of having first down at about the Dallas 25 with eight minutes left, Detroit had fourth-and-1 at the 46

You can flag Dez for coming onto the field, but its not the right call to flag him for "removal of his helmet". But who flags players for coming onto the field? In a playoff game at that? Y'all want 15 yard flags for nonsense like that to decide the game?

I mean, dude sprinted to the hash almost to scream at the ref...

Aint like his big toe was stepping on green turf and ppl asking for a flag.

Lions fans calling the NFL rigged when Suh should have been suspended for the game. They need to sit down and shut up.

In the same sequence there was also Dez coming on to the field with no helmet on yelling that should have been a penalty

Players get penalized for less stuff on the sidelines than that
Devil's advocate but is Dez on the field if there is no flag or offsetting penalties?
if a tree falls in the woods and no one is around to hear it, does it make a noise?

Yea, but its the playoffs though. Let the play on the field decide the game. As a ref, you don't taint the outcome of the game with BS flags, especially dead ball fouls like helmets off, taunting, using harsh language.

Cowboys fans
its all good I work with a Cowboy fan who will be saying the same ****. You should of heard him on Friday trying to explain why his SEC schools wet the bed in the bowl games

the irony in that statement

Dude sprinted onto the field to scream at the ref.  Dez Bryant... Not Garrett, not any other coach... Dez.

Idc if its the Super Bowl.  Its Dez' responsibility to keep his own *** in check.

It woulda been pitty to flag Dez but that was just another example of the awful officiating in that 4th quarter. The mess that happened after they made the interference call. We have never seen that happen before. Dez on the field, The Cowboys blatant holding on that TD drive. Like I said before the Cowboys made great plays down the stretch but if you can't say they had a lil help you biased as ****.

Dudes are funny man. Stop trying to justify/rationalize one of the most blatant displays of poor officiating in NFL history. Just say the referees goofed and keep it moving. Do at least that much for Lions fans.

I fail to see why some Boys fans can't say they benefited from the refs. They did. Wasn't blatant, wasn't an agenda, but it did happen...and there is no shame in it. Those things happen in this league

This isn't getting talked about enough.

NFL put themselves in this spot with their "All-Star crews" in the playoffs. Dumbest **** ever when you think about it.

It's bigger than a single missed call or error.

One call going in your teams favor does not mean that Dallas benefitted from the refs in the game.

Dude I work with to does HS reffing. While obviously a lower level he has said multiple times that being familiar with the crew and being in the same position with that crew is essential
I get trying to reward individuals but you would think a crew as a whole would be rewarded, not just mixing individuals (though it is a way for them to show no conspiracy due to being a mix of guys from multiple crews)

the irony in that statement

No irony, as I recall the refs picked up the flag and explained that face guarding is not a foul in the NFL and the contact was minimal. That's how playoff football should be officiated. Not a flag for every little touch. We will probably see the Seahawks Richard Sherman mug receivers next week.

Man, I should've known better. Detroit fans blaming the refs for this L? Really?

The team that was up 14-0 and 20-7...? Those fans are blaming the refs?

Maybe, you know, the team shouldn't have let up a long TD at the end of the first half...maybe Stafford shouldn't have thrown that INT...maybe the D should've stopped Murray on 4th and 1 at the 1...but, nah, the refs man.

Biggest pet peeve ever.

I understand the refs missing calls. But the ref the threw the flag and 10 secs later cancels the penalty. That doesn't seem right no?
My thing is you can only blame the refs when your team played a perfect game? Are players perfect? No. Are refs perfect? No.

Hold your team accountable before blaming someone else.

Oh, and, we are going to talk about the refs picking up the flag....what about the NFL picking up Suh's suspension...?

One call going in your teams favor does not mean that Dallas benefitted from the refs in the game.

Depending on the magnitude of the call of course it does. Not all calls carry the same weight

There were just as many big calls in the game that went against Dallas, so I don't agree with your point that this one call was bigger than all the other calls in the game.

If you don't mind, if be curious what they were. I was watching the game but not that close so I wouldn't mind being reminded/educated. I did see the punter being hit, but it looked like running into at most so would've only been 5 (I do think they should've called it even with being slightly blocked into)

If you don't have time no worries

This.

What's also interesting are the calls in the first half that were extremely suspect on the Cowboys. The reason we aren't speaking about it is because the Cowboys handled their business by responding and scoring afterwards.

Demarco Murray scores a TD and it gets brought back on a phantom holding call by Witten. They also threw a flag for "illegal shift" despite the fact that no one was in motion

Also, Williams gets BLATANTLY pushed into a DB and gets called for "offensive PI" (what's even more interesting is Denver runs these 'pick plays' quite often but again, Williams gets pushed).

There was also a call in the second half where they had ruled GOlden Tate I believe short of the first down. A ref ends up running over to Caldwell and they are speaking of the play, which is unchallengeable under 2 minutes. After the discussion they announce to have it reviewed despite the fact it should have came from the booth.

The Cowboys ended up scoring after the phantom Witten call, Williams responded with a 76 yard TD, and the defense held the Lions to a FG anyway. None of this will be brought up because it resulted in the Cowboys doing what they were supposed to do.

Perfectly put. The refs were off the whole game. Made suspect calls on both teams.

Add to that, this isn't the replacement refs allowing a hallmary to go thru on the last play of the game. No. Is is halfway thru the 4th where Detroit had multiple attempts to score after that. But couldn't.

Let me guess. I'm a boy's fan do my opinion doesn't matter? Lol.

Boy I pm gonna ENJOY this week. I love the hate :smokin

since there are a number of people arguing the point about 1 singular call deciding the result of a game, what are your opinions of this:
