Rodgers' arm got significantly stronger once he got in the league.. and brady didn't have a canon coming in

Rodgers arm was already strong. Just had to get back to traditional release point after he left Cal. But I'll agree with Brady, he gained a cannon as he got older. Eli's arm got stronger too

Arm strength bro.

Simple.

He's throwing Peyton ducks to wide open WR's and he's half of Peyton's age.

Your arm doesn't get stronger as you age.

Everything about him is great, but his arm just worries many of us.

i read something on rodgers that he always had the arm...just not the touch. he worked on touch and accuracy with mechanics. same with brady...brady had an arm (was a baseball players as well)...just needed to fine tune his mechanics to get the right zip on throws. i think the fact that brady didn't use the deep ball much until randy moss and his horrific combine tape sort of give people that impression. but as someone said before, i think it's tough to develop arm strength midway through a career.

not sure if it's a mechanics thing with MM8 or truly a lack of arm strength

I see the same Cowboys fan NT'ers I've always seen post in here.
Can't wait to see what fake penalties Lions fans will focus on if we beat Rodgers and company.

also on the subject of arm strength.. joe montana didn't have the strongest arm..

and obviously you know your own Philip rivers doesn't have a gun.. drew brees doesn't have a canon either

then you have the other side of things, look at the guys who have canons: jay cutler, Mathews Stafford, flacco and kaep

accuracy is more important than just having a canon

Cowboys fans any anxiety that refs will be quick to throw flags in Dallas this weekend just to 'show there is no favoritism'?

Anticipating throws/throwing guys open.
Poise in the pocket
Force him to be a pocket passer and he doesn't rise (Stanford game last year Arizona this year).

All reasons IMO why MM isn't the pro prospect Winston is.

I agree, in the right system he would be ok initially. But only one running Qb in the NFL is still going strong(Russ), the rest have regressed to the point where people are questioning if they're starting nfl qbs (rg3, Kap). So molding the offense to a more college style offense proves to be successful early, but really hinders a qbs development and leads to a MAJOR drop off in offensive production (9ers, skins).

He's not Johnny football aka a guaranteed bust. But he's not Andrew luck aka a sure thing.

Jameis is much much closer to a sure thing to me. He's an nfl Qb already.

I don't care about where people have them slotted or who is better... MM8 has holes in his game for sure, but his arm strength definitely isn't one of them.

He ain't Kaep but he damn sure isn't Chad Pennington the way some of y'all are talking.

^ to be a successful 'running' QB you have to look at guys like steve young and aaron Rodgers.. use your running ability to help other things.. be smart.. selective

I'm mode concerned with MM8 fitting balls into right windows rather then arm strength.

All his targets are wide open.

Can he make the throws with a DB on the WR hip is more important.
This is what separates the men from the boys in the NFL.
Haven't seen enough of Mariota to draw conclusions on his transition to the league.
I'll give my analysis after the championship game.

this is what i remember most people saying as opposed to his arm

The arm strength is just a warning sign, but obviously the kid has amazing intangibles. He's mature, smart, high IQ on the field, athletic, strong, etc.

He can be a good pro. I'm not fully counting him out, clearly the kid has talent and is worth a high draft pick for a struggling organization.

When I say arm strength I don't just mean it as I worry about him being able to toss 70 yard bombs. Those are rare plays, only a few can make only a few times a week.

His arm strength worries me because against an NFL defense in those tight windows I don't know if he'll consistently be able to fit the ball into tight windows with the right velocity.

It's not about MM being able to toss it 70 yards. That's not what makes you successful as a pro.

It's being able to consistently move the chains on 3rd and 9, 3rd and 12, even 3rd and 6. On passing downs when the pro defense knows youre passing, can you hit the receiver at the right time in the right spot with the right velocity. If any of that is off, you look like Geno throwing constant pick 6's.

Bortles is a good comparison. He has a lot of great intangibles and he might end up being fine, he's still very young and has lots of time to grow. But his arm strength last year led to a LOT of picks because when his receivers finally did get open (which was a rarity) he wasn't able to get the ball to them quick enough. Those floaters were constantly picked off and many taken back for 6.

That's what I worry about with MM. It ain't about hitting receivers on the sidelines with a 50 yard go route. I'm sure he can do that.

It's about the 15 yard cross route on 3rd and 10 in the middle of the field. Can he hit those windows quickly?

That's what we'll have to wait and see.

In the mean time tho, I am NOT a MM hater. There is nothing you can hate about this kid personally. He has the exact work ethic, personality, size, smarts and athleticism you'd want from your franchise QB.

I DO want him to do well.
I really do.

Those tight windows just worry me for him in the NFL. Receivers are never as open in the pros as they are for him playing in Oregon. Never, outside of a few defensive breakdowns from time to time.
