Its marketing like B said.
You want to know the real reason why no one will ever reach Jordan status with shoes? Its because people REFUSE to let it happen. All this time Kobe Lebron, hell even penny could have been up there, but because people are so stubborn to move on from those shoes, it will never happen. THATS the only reason.

People are really out here killing themselves for Jordan 11 in mediocre color ways every christmas....for a shoe that has worse quality than the 90s pair.

The Jordan XI wasn't a first day sellout but it sold way faster than any other Jordan

Shoes didn't have hard release date like they do now so there wasn't the anticipation to cause a first day sellout

Michael Jordan helped make the Nike brand.

Nike needed Jordan

Nike doesn't need Lebron, Kobe or KD

Bruh.... It has to start somewhere and it started with jordan. That's an unfair statement now considering that nike is now well established. Make no mistake about it tho. Nike still needs endorsees like lebron or kd or kobe. That's why nike pays that cash to keep them. They recognize that athletes make sales.

It being a unfair statement doesn't make it a untrue statement

Its true

Nike needed Jordan

Lebron helps Nike

I would still buy the Lebron models if they were endorsed by another elite player

Like someone said before, Lebron is a divisive figure, he is not close to being the pitchman of Jordan's level, no athlete is close to that level

That is unfair to Lebron for people even try to compare them, it diminishes Lebron greatness in the process

Jordan the player and the marketing side are unmatched

MJ was the first to establish the sneakers, the best in the world and imo ever at the perfect time in the history of the game, no matter what players shoes today or future models will look like they'll never be able to replicate that first original run with Mike, it's beyond nostalgic level to an almost mythical status now you can't recreate that timing, career or charisma... Can only happen once... Just like Bron (the best today) can put 23 on his shoes as much as he wants but 23 will always truly mean MJ

i guess thats why nikes leading sales (non jordans) come from sig athletes.... and yes its an unfair comparison. swap jordan and lebron's timeline and its a different story. make jordan come along now and put lebron as the salesman for nike in the 80s. completely different times.

I wonder if Jordan ever did $300m in sales during his playing career.

Obviously his numbers trump that now, but I believe sneaker sales across the board are at an all time high.

Lebron's popularity isn't what Jordan's was but due to the times and technology I wouldn't be suprised if he was able to reach a much larger demographic.

the what ifs
Say what ?

Jordan in adjusted US dollars probably did more than 300 million, also Jordan's didn't cost $200 back then.  Snottie but it best thats what I was trying to say but he laid it out plainly.  Although I think if you put lebron back then it would be different because the way Lebron does things are different.  And Mj was extremely successful who knows if LBJ would have had the same success on the court.  MJ being MJ playing basketball had a lot to do with it.

Nike's running shoe sales trump Nike basketball sig shoes.

But the rest of your point is still very valid.

Lebrons shoes are not doing those numbers if they are called hyper-whatever's. Nike needs Bron, KD and kobe to do those numbers.

I'm sure they never did those numbers with the other Sig athletes not named jordan (penny, Vince carter, Barkley etc.)

But didn't he have a $200 shoe during his career. I doubt he sold $300m that year.

No they probably didn't and part of that is because the other companies were doing a lot better then.  Such as FILA who had Grant Hill and Reebok with Shaq and Iverson.  It was a different time, if Penny was out now he would be doing KD numbers or better.  I mean technically Penny has the foams and they still do ok no?

It's mainly because shoes are at an all time high in popularity right now. I remember theme the "suite case" Jordans dropped for $200. Dudes were on them.

That said.... I'm not even salty that the fruity pebbles didn't drop in men's sizes. If they were white based tho.... A problem. Would have been a problem.

Im not sure if sneaker sales are at an all time high in terms of adjusted dollars and percentages

I be willing to bet in adjusted dollars to say Jordan had better sales in terms of relative product

Remember Nike tiers Lebron's product now

Back then Nike just pumped out the signature Jordan model

Jordan cost the around $200 dollars in adjusted prices

Also playing the what ifs, I don't think Lebron would reach a larger demographic in the 1980s. The 1980s were a different time with different mores

Exactly and I had a pair I thought the case they came in was ill

I have yet to pick up a pair of 12's. I really like the fact that most C/Ws are sitting but I haven't been able to pull the trigger on em.

I took a better look at them this weekend and they were awfully bulky.

If I do buy a pair I still want the heart of a lion c/w first
