Anybody mess with it? Its essentially a taxi service ran by everyday individials. You register to be a driver and they send you a phone. You send the company your vehicle information insurance all that jazz. Then you essentially are a cab driver. I think there is potentially money to be made if you are in a large urban city at least from what I've heard from my friend's brother. I plan to give it a whirl one I get refered to it and learn more about it.

Its also from what little research I've done a nice alternative to a typical cab as the rates are lower and the transactions are handled through the mobile app so cash is not necessary. I can see potential issues with the reliability of the drivers but its interesting none the less.

The auto insurance/liability aspect isn't clearly figured out yet. Your personal auto insurance company may drop you from coverage if they find out you're using your personal vehicle for commercial purposes. Know what you are getting into before you become a driver. Same goes for lyft and sidecar (similar ride share services).

Also, the money is no joke, I know quite a few people who drive in SF making like $50+/hr taking home like $1200/week (before gas expenses and the tax you'll have to pay at the end of the year and after uber takes their 20 or so % cut). But again, do the research for youself first.

My boy is an Uber driver in SF on weekends. He typically just drives Sat from 2pm to 3am and nets a cool $600 after Uber fees. Not sure if that includes gas expenses too. I couldn't do it but he has mouths to feed.

I read an blurb in the elevator at work on Tuesday, they take home 90k a year on average in NY. I couldnt believe it. Had to go read the article right after that.
Uber Says Its Drivers Are Making $75,000 - $90,000 A Year
With rumors of a huge $500 million round of funding  on the horizon, Uber is set to become the most valuable startup in the world.
For users, the appeal of Uber is obvious. You can get a car on demand without the hassle of looking up and calling a cab company. But it turns out it's extremely lucrative for drivers as well.

According to Uber, the median wage for an UberX driver working at least 40 hours a week in New York City is $90,766 a year and $74,191 a year in San Francisco, The Washington Post reports.  UberX is its lower-cost service, where drivers use their own vehicles, similar to Lyft’s service.

For contrast, estimates place the average cab driver's salary at around $30,000 a year. That's nearly triple the income. New York City Uber drivers even make more than the average tech worker across the U.S., who pull in $87,811  a year.

Although Uber takes a 20% cut of drivers' fares, they are more efficient with less downtime because they don't have to cruise around looking for riders, they save money by not having to apply for expensive taxi permits, and can set their own hours.

Granted, Uber hasn't revealed the median income for drivers across all of the 60 U.S. cities that it operates in, but the promise of a more efficient system has lured 20,000 new drivers to join Uber's platform every month since January.

The mustache is Lyft

Same concept.

I use Uber, Lyft and Sidecar. More convenient and cheaper than taxis. Especially here in LA where taxis aren't filling the streets like NY

my buddy drove with lyft for a minute. they are taking more from the drivers cut and raising fees for customers. these companies have HIGH turnover. it's great for the customer bc it's an alternative to taxis, but as a driver you got to be careful
they call themselves a "tech" company and not a "transportation" so they are in the clear if you get in an accident. they only cover you if you have a driver in the car and doing a job. if you are in an accident "in between" jobs you are screwed if you dont have a commercial insurance

like most of this sharing community companies, i dont think they make all that much money, just VCs pouring a ton of money into them

I've met a few drivers for uber/lyft/sidecar that got into accidents with a passenger in their cars and when they call the companies support line, there's no one to be found. These companies are making so much got damn money (with very little operational costs), they're just getting it while the getting is good.

Man the hours sound brutal but he's a young dude working through school while supporting a child. I'm sure that 12 hour shift beats clockin in at Trader Joe's 3-4 times a week. I'm sure established professionals aren't itching to leave their jobs so they can make 90K a year driving people around.

in SF (where they are HQ), you got former drivers protesting outside.
they did a piece on the news about these companies. they dont even do a thorough background check (even though they say they have a extensive one). drivers get in an accident and the passenger and driver are screwed bc insurance companies arent gonna cover bc you used it for commercial purpose and Uber/lyft dont want a thing to do with it.
a young girl was killed by an uber driver. the only reason he was even in SF was to give rides. he was driving and was waiting for his app to signal a pick up. uber first response was basically we have nothing to do with it because he wasnt actually transporting a passenger. also, the driver had a history of driving violations that was ignored.
