Can i move out? vol. tired of living at home

My man your total student loans is probably your salary ceiling, that's tough, that sounds like a prison. Def get a roommate though.

'13 grad
moved out last Fall
when I say "moved out" I mean out of my parents house and my home state and relocated 3k miles away
and I did that making less than 1/4 of your salary (yes you read that right)
you can do whatever the **** you wanna do brother
repped.

Yeah get a roommate. I like my room mates. I'd be bored as hell without them. They're my best friends. Just make sure they aren't broke if you go that route. You don't need to be spotting people for utilities and that crap. You could afford a dope spot with a roommate.

That 30 years is a number i pulled out of my ***. No idea how long it'll take and nor does it matter to me at the moment

But refinancing these loans is something I'm definitely going to look at doing. Thanks for the link

I just bought a brand new 2013 Civic for a great price and I love it. No way I'm getting rid of it at the moment.

And I should've clarified. I'm looking to live in the Clarendon VA area. 1200 total for rent can land you a pretty good 2 bedroom pad. I'm looking for a spot with a roommate. If I have 400-500 to spend a month outside of bills, I think I can make it work.
does not compute, especially when Clarendon practically IS the city...unless you absolutely need the car to get to work if your office is in the boonies somewhere

your life and money though...

Man. I feel him.I don't need a car. I had my license revoked for a year and got around fine. But screw public transit. You don't want to be on their time. Plus it kills your game with the broads. Telling them to pick you up isn't fun.

half my friends that i went to school with either moved to or immediately near that area he is looking at...only two that i know of have cars because they work way out away from that area...

the transit coming to and going from that area is VERY reliable and there is a VERY high concentration of higher income individuals that don't drive, lots of women included...

also garage fees are not unheard of in that area since its so walkable...but again, his money and prerogative

I took home like $2200 per month right out of college, but only had $230 student loans per month, so we'd be about even. I worked a minimum wage retail job 25+ hours per week during school, but that's how I lived so I didn't have near your $9k savings... I graduated late May and moved out of my parents' house mid-July. It's definitely doable, you'll learn a lot about yourself and find out what you do/don't really need.

Most of my loans were 10 year loans, not 25 or 30 year loans. You can check your account online to see. Call them up and tell them you need a lower payment, and I am sure at least one of the companies will work with you....hopefully.

Props to you for wanting to move out even knowing it will be a struggle/adjustment. I don't get all this "enjoy adulthood at home" and "staying home for comfort." I get that young people didn't have "loan payments" back then but each generation has faced something and figured it out. They also raised families younger, bought houses at much higher interest rates, and dealt with it knowing it was unacceptable to stay home unless under certain circumstances. I know part of it is the student loan payments, but I personally know a lot of 27+ year olds staying home who spend thousands on clothes and phones, don't know how to cook rice, and have their moms make their appointments and pay their bills. (and yes, I know there are exceptions and it's not out of the ordinary if it's your culture to stay home or you're trying to help your parents because they lost their jobs).

Bottom line is if there is a will there is a way....good luck man.

Get some side income coming in

This is the idea. Warren Buffett says three different incomes, I say five. (But realistically three) Job, investment, side hustles. Timberland, oil rights, private businesses, hell a food cart.

Man, I would say get rid of the car but its probably already lost so much value, being a 2013, that you'll end up losing money trying to sell it. That New Car scam.

'Our sons, and men in general, have the deck of economic cards stacked in their favor. They should not need subsidies from their parents.' - Millionaire next door.

I highly suggest this book to anyone who wants to be wealthy. It's not some get rich quick book, it lays out the facts if Americas millionaires, who they are, where they're from and how they got there. Some tips, of course somethings are pretty extreme but overall pretty ideal. Most people need to figure themselves out, what will make them
Happy.

9k saved up is nice. I would just wait a couple more years. If possible. You definitely could move out now if you REALLY wanted to though.

Yeah your public transit is better than ours. I've used it. I didn't know it was like that though.

Yeah side hustle is a good idea. You know how to bartend? I know dudes doing that once a week for a few grand a month in the right place. There is many others though.

$115 a week is not enough for "food, a gym membership, alcohol, women and fun"

just figure you eat $10 a day on average between breakfast, lunch and dinner...that's $300

gym should be about $30 a month, even less if your job offers something on it

Most fifths of alc will cost you $30...that's not lasting a month and not including drinking when you go out.

women...you gonna need a GF and they cost too, less than randoms, but still cost

fun you can make happen, but it's tough having fun knowing you make 60 but counting pennies for everything

I would suggest another year. Try to get your savings to 20k. If you are hard pressed to leave, put your loans on hold. That's too much to be paying back monthly.

Good luck either way.

Yeah get a deferment/forbearance at least and focus on saving, put what would be the loan plus into an account.

what good is $x amount saved/in the bank when someone owes so much money?

there's not much point in trying to save money, when you could be using that money to knock principle down...

$9k is a sizable amount to have as an emergency fund...only touch if you absolutely need it...but thats just me

I bartend now. It's ok money, but I also work at a restaurant, so I'm sure people make more.

You should honestly, move out, take a few Gs and start some small business, food cart, throw a concert, anything with low investment and more than nominal gain. Rinse and repeat. Find something you've been doing for a while and figure out how to make money (don't go app), even reselling can be profitable, but if you have a job it's really not worth it as a side hustle. Be creative, don't follow everyone else. You say you're an engineer? Get into some contractor work putting together outside furniture, buy a beater for a G, put 2gs in it, sell it for 4gs. There's a million ways to make a buck, try em until one works. The one thing you have that I don't is capital, I'm trying to save but damn bills.

But all times had turmoil.

'50 pretty sweet
'60 most kids were shipped to war
'70 black Monday, peak oil, start of Cold War
'80 crack/wall street scams/reganomics
'90 relatively sweet
'00 war, housing bubble
'10 student loans

It's always bad, it always will be. But, if you have it in you, you can make it. Be strategic, do your thing, don't make me no never mind. But, don't tell me 'I have to' 'I can't move out' admit, you like the comfort, you like the safety, you like the security; you like those more than the pride of paying your own rent, more than the pride of saying 'this is mine.'

Firm believer in the 'you can do whatever you set your mind to' I understand at a system level, people may be screwed, but on the personal level there is very little that can stand in your way, especially if you have parents you can/would want to live with. No excuse for the middle class. No excuse for the college educated. (Barring earlier exceptions).

The American dream I've bought into is 'work hard, prosper and freedom is the only goal of man, I am a man.'

The clarification you made above, I agree with for the most part.

Would love to know of these magical 2BR in clarendon for 1200/mo all inclusive, that's tough to come by even when splitting everything in half w a roommate

Currently live in court house, monthly costs add up quick assuming you want to partake in nightlife of arlington and the city (would be pointless to live here if you don't IMO), due to your high student loan bill I'd suggest you live at home for another 1-2yrs unless you get a considerable salary bump or you don't have to worry about saving $

Also be sure you're familiar with the area and the crowd, it's not for everyone and admittedly it can get pretty douchey

Aight here are the numbers im looking at: i have about 9k saved up. Been recently buying a lot of cloths and flyknits but i need to cut that out.

Income: Im taking home 3400$ a month.

Ill be paying 1200/month on student loans(wells fargo, sallie mae, nelnet) paying 255 on car payments, 140 on car insurance, 90 on gasvand 50 on cell phone bills. that totals 1645$ a month. These are the only bills i have right now.that leaves me with 1665$. Ill probably be spending 1200 total on rent which leaves 465$ for food, a gym membership, alchohol, women and fun for an entire month. I think i can make it work... I got to make it work

Are you utilities included in your rent?

Save money then move out. You'll be a lot more comfortable with atleast a good years worth of savings.
