Whats up guys. I graduated from Rutgers with a BA in Information Technology and Informatics last May. Been working at Comcast Business as a Tier 1 Tech Support Agent since January and I absolutely hate it. Ready to get back into the books and make moves. Looking to get into the Security field, thinking about starting with the Security + for my first certification. Can anyone recommend the best way to go about studying for the test, don't want to take a class just want to do sellf study. Guess I'm looking for the best materials to use.
Also any tips that can help me land a better role than what I have right now would also be helpful. Willing to put in this work to better myself just looking for some guidance.

not sure if you guys are familiar with the bay area, but currently doing my A+ Certs thru Academy X. Tech SF is paying for it. So whats the next step after getting this CERTS?

I just grabbed Sybex and/or Exam Cram for all my CompTia Certs. I would look within Comcast, I work for another ISP as well and its fairly easy to move up once you have experience.

Just went from a contractor to Employee at TW Cable... got my A+ and N+ working on my Sec+, then im gonna learn coding for the next yr... my goal is 80-100k in 2 yrs...

A friend of mines reached out to me like a month ago that works for DOD here in the DMV and he told me to get a A+/Net + Cert needless to say I cut that cheque today to attend trainace in Greenbelt, MD. Wish me luck guys.

Why even waste time with Comptia Exams then? Sec+ yea I can see it. Be better served taking CCNA.

What specific role are you aiming for to get that salary that fast? I know it is doable I'm just curious I am aiming for the same salary within 2-3 years more in the upper range though.

lol word, I assume most of us are fairly "young", and while IT in general pays better than other areras, you still have to put in work before the big pay day.

Well it really depends it is doable. I have friends that are under 26 making 100K+. Started out 65K-80K straight out of school. If I get into this rotational program I will be in that 100K+ range also.

Most software engineering positions that I've seen have a BS degree requirement. I would say start applying for jobs & internships now and apply for everything. If your career route is Software Engineering you don't need any certs really unless you are going the government route then any of the Comptia certs will be helpful.

I have to learn a main programming language so that I can maximize my appeal. However, I've been struggling w/ JavaScript. Feel like if this is a hassle for me then I don't stand a chance w/ languages like Java, and the C languages

There will be a managerial role opening up in a yr or so if this merger doesnt goes through with Charter... my manager is waiting on the word to leave and go to charter as a backup as my former manager is the IT director over there now.

@sharpshooter718 Nice sound like you have great opportunities over at TWC. My boy works there too and has been working there since high school and is currently a team lead only 5 years in.
I have the same outlook as you. Salary is more important to me, but it is also important that I get into more design and business focused managerial positions.
Just had my first mid year review and my manager said that he is very generous with yearly raises, goes over budget every year
I'm sure I will be at this company for a while, because a lot of places don't give good raises or support your career goals.

Need a little advice. I share a home network with 6 or 7 other people and about a month ago a few of the users on the network had a message show up when they opened their browsers from the ISP that there was suspicious activity on the network and that a PC on the network might've been a botnet. At the time I ran virus and malware scans on my personal PC's and even reimaged my laptop that had a proxy chrome extension I thought might've been the problem. Fast forward to this morning when I go to Google something on my phone and I get a message from Google that their system had detected unusual traffic from my computer network. At this point I'd like to get this resolved and figure out what's going on and identify the PC/PC's causing this. What are my options? Should I install packet sniffing software like wireshark and monitor traffic? I'm no networking expert, but I could probably figure it out. Opinions?

You would need to set up a span port on the gateway device to catch all the traffic leaving the network. Then you would need an IDS to find out which device is the culprit.
