Ask your CS department if you can your hands on some equipment. Hands on experience is the best kind, and many schools will work with students who request it.

Yeah we have a year long senior design project, so thats about as hands on as it gets at VCU lol.

Thanks man im trying my best to be really successful in this field. Im 21 so I'm pretty sure im younger than you lol.
 
Has anyone used Zimbra? VMWare has an exchange alternative called Zimbra and it's actually very cool. Almost like a mix between GroupWise and Exchange.

MS always wins though of course.
 
NT brethren I need some advice. I just graduated from Rutgers New Brunswick this past semester with a degree in IT. I'm looking to get my first gig but unfortunately I zero experience besides the degree on my resume. I currently work as a restaurant manager but obviously I'm looking for something IT related. I'd like to be a BA (Business Analyst) eventually. Any tips on how I could land my first position or strengthen my resume. This thread is awesome BTW, good to see so many NT'ers are in IT. Can't wait to join you guys.

Get your foot in the door by applying to BIG companies....I'm talking under a big umbrella.  Those are the ones you want since they allocate money for positions and you're not under a microscope.  Usually the IT Dept there will always pay for Certs or enhance education:

-  Dept of Water & Power

-  College / University

-  Big Name Brands (UPS, Cox, Johnson & Johnson, etc)

Don't worry about getting your dream job / position...just get your foot in the door.  Help Desk, CSR, Tier 1, Tier2, etc...  In time and once you're IN, you will see job postings within the company and you will get first dibs.  Use that to your advantage and start networking w/other Departments:  Firewall, Exchange, MSS, Server Admins, Web Team, Ops, SAC, etc.  Stay hungry and stay motivated.  Don't worry about your total salary, but consider what your benefits are.  401k, 403b, Health/Dental, Vacation, Sick Time, PTO...etc.  Sometime the benefits alone outweigh a Salary descrepency of +/- 30k.  Good luck

Thanks for the advice fam :smokin . Yeah I am about to start applying anywhere and everywhere but I will definitely keep this in mind. Reading those job descriptions can be a little intimidating though because obviously I haven't had the hands on experience with a lot of the technologies they require. Although I am confident I would learn once I get my first position. Definitely looking towards help desk at first.
 
Any tips for getting into Information Security? I only have a Liberal Arts degree and no prior IT experience.

I'm in the Houston area, any other IT NTers in the Houston area?

Anyone else have any tips on how to get the first experience in IT? I just graduated and have a degree with a high GPA but not much else, and I know GPA doesn't mean **** compared to experience especially in IT.
 
People need to push internships more to folks who work in technological fields.

I'm gonna look for one soon as I transfer. It has me nervous though, because I don't have much experience, and I don't wanna show up on day one looking lost.
