I graduated with a BA in Fitness & Sports Management. IT is all about what you know. If you have an old laptop or somewhat capable desktop, install ESXi on it. Once you get ESXi on it, create some virtual servers like Windows Server 2008 and get comfortable with how a Windows domain environment. Licenses are expensive for server, but there are many ways to circumvent paying for this.... if you catch my drift (TPB). Play around with DHCP,  DNS, Active Directory, Group Policy. Maybe create a VPN using RRAS, which will also include some basic networking skills when you need to port forward for the IPSec ports to the server.

Start studying for Cisco's CCNA cert. It's an awesome intro to networking as well as Cisco's proprietary IOS commands. There are tons of books that help study for CCENT and CCNA, most of them you can circumvent paying for also.... if you catch my drift again (TPB).

Bay Area, ayeeee. Join the IT life at your medical office, there's plenty of IT gigs at hospitals and medical offices. 

The Bay Area is like the IT hub of America, so you're already ahead of the game.

Don't worry about it. Ask questions they understand that you are an intern. Just don't ask questions without searching for the answers first , they want to see that you can think.

If you want a summer internship start looking in September/October. Most companies do the majority of their intern hiring in the fall, goodluck.

I start applying this upcoming fall semester so I have a little time to prepare. I'm trying to learn as much as possible. I wish I would've taken things into my own hands sooner rather than try to learn all I need to learn in class.
 
Past few months I've been doing a windows 7 upgrade for a hospital. The pay isn't great, but I've learned some useful stuff and it's been good to see that type of working environment. The job is coming to a close soon and I'm still not sure what my next move will be. I'm thinking about relocating before I start trying to get a long term position with a company. I'll probably just do more contract work until that point.

Transwiz is an awesome tool for transferring domain accounts. It grabs everything, mail profiles included.

Remember seeing this in HS my how it has grown. I would like to convert my company into housing something on site as a mail server. Currently we are juts using basic 1&1 webmail for our employees which is horrible because their mail servers are marked as spammed servers on certain corporate firewalls.

Ubuntu server, if I remember correctly, comes prepackaged with a mail server. You might want to take advantage of some open source software, because I understand how much 1&1 webmail sucks...

It's honestly not that tough if you make a serious commitment to learning. CBT Nuggets make awesome videos that helped me visualize and put networking into real world scenarios. There are also tons of ebooks that cover all the topics needed for CCNA/CCENT. All of these are available on TPB

How much those CCNA/CCENT certs cost? Trying to grab some more certs this summer. I'm doing tech support now for a cable/internet provider but I'm sick of talking to folk on the phone :lol:

It was $100. Hella easy to sign up and lots of testing locations. Master subnetting and you'll be golden

Adobe acrobat, office, and ms project.

Could be looking at some decent fines and a few thousands spent. I'm 99% sure I know who snitched. I've see a few nopiracy.org ads on my Facebook and recently we had a guy leave giving a one day notice of his last day and he seemed to be upset over something.
 
I'm thinkin bout gettin into the IT field as well. Ive been doin all levels of security guard work for the past 7 years and hit a brick wall as far advancement and pay. I'd b startin from the bottom. Jus thinkin bout takin an intro course and starting from there eventually grabbin a 2 year degree for a CC then a BA later on. What's like the intro type jobs I can land while in school??
